Fred, have you had a chance to compare the FR160 vs the FR360? I have both and, atleast with mine, the FR160 works much better as far as solar power is concerned. The FR160 worked continuously for about 8hrs in sunlight while the FR360 required a crank every 15 mins or so even in direct sunlight. Thanks.
@fredhart great review would you think this would be a good Christmas present, i heard this has a sort charge/ very very short battery life / re charge life
Very good tutorial. The amazon reviews for this were mostly poor, but I'm thinking it's because buyers either didn't understand how to use it or used it as a regular radio. It's not meant to play your favorite radio station all day. It's an Emergency radio, to be used periodically during an emergency situation.
GREAT REVIEW, thanks! Do you know, or does anybody else here know, if this unit will charge an iPod or Kindle via the USB charger?I just ordered one today.
I have bad experience with cheap wind-up radios and flashlights, the battery always died on me within a year. I'd prefer something with standard AA size rechargeable batteries.
It is very small to carry, you can get pretty good reception with the Shortwave Radio if you take a Wi-Fi Antenna and strip and tape the wires to the extendable antenna
The FM Radio is so so, but when you buy a mono radio you arent really buying it for the FM Radio
Anyway one of the great things about the radio is how crystal clear the AM Radio Reception sounds I was impressed.
Anyway, the number one rule when you carry something in a big out bag, make sure the things you carry aren't so big, and never rely on a multi-tool depending on what it is for all your things you need to do.
I've seen hand crack re-charger for your cell phone for less money than this radio.
Also, what about a shortwave radio? Did you know that in third world countries, shortwave radio is the way they get their news?
Awesome piece of kit, but everyone of these I've had (red cross one included) has busted inside of 3 months. Might want to carry two just for reliabilities sake.
Good review Fred but, I think they could of done a much better job on that radio since its Red Cross endorsed. IN A EMERGENCY you need a TOUGH unit. I have looked at those and read the reviews and others and I am still looking because of poor ratings. If you find a good one let me know that can pull the stations. Thanks!
@aaadream This actually pulls in stations pretty good for me, I was surprised, especially after reading reviews. I did not play any of the AM or FM stations in the video because of copyrights.
Great review, but I have a question. Will the solar panel charge the cell phone or only the dynamo? I checked the ETON website and could not find any specific info.
What do your call that decoration jelly in bottle beside the monitor. been trying to find one. its look so cool very hypnotic.

@ 6:55 how surprising with AT&T you have no signal :D

@cornflake71 It's only the Dynamo, I guess the solar cell just doesn't provide enough juice at one time
