Ol Hank wrote it and as only a man who felt such loneliness can put it on paper. Now Dean sings it beautifully, in his style. Some folks feel Honky Tonk is the way to sing. It don't matter which. It's all in the ear of the beholder.
Sorry, but for those who only know the Elvis and Cash versions, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the ACTUAL version by Hank Williams. As for this Dean Martin version, I have to say it blows. Lets hope Terry Bradshaw sings it better. Shouldn't be hard.

I know that Hank Williams wrote this song, or at least popularized this song, and with all due respect to Hank Williams... This is the most beautiful version of this song I have EVER heard!!! Bravo Dino!!!
LadyKnight72 thanks for sharing. Thought I'd heard and/or had most of Dean Martin's songs, but someway this one slipped by me. I've heard many versions of this particular song sung by various artists, but he sings it as well as any I've heard.
hy ladyknight,i m from france.i d like to tell you how i m thrilling to the listening of this song.i knew it by elvis but never heard this version.what a beauty.i almost cry.never be more sympathetic than dean martin.mille merci.
@everlybross hi everlybross, I feel the same way. I knew Elvis version as well and it is wonderful too but when I heard Dean sing it... man that just struck a chord in my heart.
@MrAlfie1923 The movie where he has his head in his hands is Toys In The Attic and the one where he's dealing cards is from the western Five Card Stud. : )
Many people gave Jerry Lewis all the credit in their movies together. Dean was a natural comedian. Jerry Lewis isnt a great singer . He dances great. but Dean Martin, when he sings, its a sound like no other. Lucille Ball said he had a voice that could cut butter. Thats how smooth he was. !
He will go down in history as one of the gr eats.
Dean Martin is simply the best singer of all time, and he's my favorite. There's something about Dean that always makes me want to smile, but then when he sang songs like this one here and I hear it, it makes me want to cry. I've seen many Dean Martin videos, I've even made one myself, but this is the greatest one by far. I love this song, and while it may not be his song, to me, he made it his.
Dean Martin was a good singer and made some great shows- glad i lived in a time so i was capable to see some of them on tv. Yes you can buy dvd today but that wont give you the same feeling like when you know you just have seen him on tv with a show he made few days earlier. The time back then was great- people were more free and much more intelligent- wow what a great time.
The first time I heard Dean Martin croon this tune was on an 8-track tape that was lost with progress and was not able to find it until today with some persistence in searching. Thank goodness. Always had the pipes to sing a song that just put you at ease. Thank you for the posting of it.
Love this video that I have listen and watched more than 100 times........cool editing and love Dean Martin version over Elvis even though I am big Elvis Fan.
@LadyKnight72 This song has an extremely interpersonal nature about it that touches just about anybody. If you read the lyrics as poetry and not a song, it's downright moving. The beautiful music to go with it only adds to the song's nature.
Martin didn't have his heart in some of the songs that he recorded, but when he did he sang them about as well as anyone could. He had his heart in this one.
Dean can really deliver a song. So could Frank, even though he really didn't have a very good voice. Did Frank ever sing this one? If so, it probably was good, too.
This song, by the greatest poet/singer in the history of music, would like this version as it shows that any person with a soul, can feel the words, as it brings out the best in the feelings of man. Whether it is Dean or E. Just notice the feelings that come out in their voice.
Dean was a actor, stage performer, comeadian, and Singer. One of the few truly great performers of my generation. I do miss him. (He is probably the best all around performer of all time.)

@elvis4ever1935. many people in the world prefer Martin's voice to elvis' (im 1 of those) who -by the way -sings almost all songs the same way and style
Thank you LadyKnight72...this is a terrific video to go with Dino's impeccable voice. So smooth, filled with emotion and beautiful to the ear, Dino was the consummate entertainer. It never gets old...I hope kids today listen and learn!
I love Dean Martin and think that he had a truly great and fantastic voice, and also believe this is a superb cover (that I enjoyed very much), but not as good as Hank Williams original version or B.J. Thomas's cover which had less of Dino's smoothness but soooo much more passion and intensity.
It seems to me nobody hears it the same way because Dean's voice is way much better than all those mentioned. Elvis ' version is not bad but still. Any musician would agree me, sorry.
@nwside7725 Strong disagreement here. If you think Dino didn't infuse this song with deep soul, then brother, you don't know soul at all. Hank had his style, but he was more one-dimensional than the multi-faceted incredibly talented Dino Crocetti. This is the finest rendition of I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, ever recorded.
@WALRU11 I agree completely. I was a freshman in high school and followed Dean from the early 60s - total class act and one hell of a singer and cool entertainer. Even Elvis looked up to him....
@Christian06820 Dino was the epitome of class done casually. I bought his records, watched his Thursday night unrehearsed shows, smiled through his movies, & even followed him around the golf course. He was funny, terribly talented, & as cool as they come. The singer from Steubenville was a crooner par excellence. Elvis admired him because Dino was another singer whose lyrical interpretation displayed vocal wit via the creative artistry of an exceptionally nimble mind & supple voice.
@nwside7725 I tried that. Sorry, Hank might have soul but manages to hide it behind the all-too-simple chord sequence. And the nasal twang.... it just does not do for me.
@nwside7725 Dean's version here is full of feeling and soul, more, frankly, than Hank's. The fact that Williams was a fine songwriter didn't make him a great singer. He was a passable one, nowhere near the singer, for example, that his "protege", Ray Price is. On stage Dean could be silly and condescending towards his material, but when he wanted to sing seriously, as he did here, he could be magnificent.
A very private man, by all accounts, he probably understood being alone. Enormous care went into this video. Notice how on the words "light up", the sky lights up at 1:51.
i listen to this and can actually feel his soul, even after all this time, i mean, we're in 2009, and i grew up with his voice always in the back somewhere, and it's only now that i realise who he really was
amazing! thank you so much for that; great voice, great artist, from montreal

Christian06820 7 months ago
@Christian06820 Dino was the epitome of class done casually. I bought his records, watched his Thursday night unrehearsed shows, smiled through his movies, & even followed him around the golf course. He was funny, terribly talented, & as cool as they come. The singer from Steubenville was a crooner par excellence. Elvis admired him because Dino was another singer whose lyrical interpretation displayed vocal wit via the creative artistry of an exceptionally nimble mind & supple voice.

@nwside7725 Most of us know that Hank is the original. I've heard many versions of this song.
DrunkenPiano 1 year ago
@nwside7725 I tried that. Sorry, Hank might have soul but manages to hide it behind the all-too-simple chord sequence. And the nasal twang.... it just does not do for me.

@nwside7725 Dean's version here is full of feeling and soul, more, frankly, than Hank's. The fact that Williams was a fine songwriter didn't make him a great singer. He was a passable one, nowhere near the singer, for example, that his "protege", Ray Price is. On stage Dean could be silly and condescending towards his material, but when he wanted to sing seriously, as he did here, he could be magnificent.

dean martin was a fantastic performer, but nobody has as much pain in their voice as hank does when he sings this song.

I actually was a chauffeur for dean in the 1980's.I would take dean from his hollywood house to van nuys airport.
MGM gave dean a 4 propellor plane.
dean was and is a great guy.
I would pick up dean at his house north of sunset. his exwife jeannie had the original house on the same street 2 blocks north.
unlike other divorces--dean and jeannie were gracious
i actually remember picking up dean once
also he had john waynes picture in his bedroom where the tv would be.
he was a true great
