  • This man played drums for Mr Zappa, approved,- like Bozzio and the other gods.

  • that drumming is genius

  • Who is this drummer? Damn!

  • @brettbed

    Morgan Ågren

  • ...try to count along

  • this is real djent.

  • i will forever love from 2:43 to 4:01, he is kinda hearing, exploring this riff, and then he's like i got it! and then wuuuuuuuuuuuhhhhh!!! awesome.

  • @Brutaltronics actually these are all riffs from sol niger within.. definitely check that album out

  • is that a masking tape on 15th fret of his guitar? what does it do?

  • @09198384558 its on the high strings to stop them from ringing out, since he's not using them haha

  • @UshinawaLives lol this cd came out in '98 at the latest

  • sole nigger with in is the name of this group bad ass album

  • Meshuggah will eat lamb of god for breakfast and shit out a slipknot

  • Comment removed

  • I could've sworn it said Dagens Owning at the end for a minute. I dont know about the Dagens part but this definitely Owns.

  • Could the guitar be more boring? Comming from a Fear Factory Fan....

  • @BiollanteSpawn well... gtfo and listen to your fat guitar hero...

  • @BiollanteSpawn Dude, you have bad taste in music.

  • @CloggedLacrimalGland um what? This is terrible. YOU have a bad taste in music. Go on start a youtube fight! Derp derp derp

  • @BiollanteSpawn Get the fuck outta here and listen to your LMFAO, you skinny bitch.

  • Incredible piece guys. Sick!

  • my name is johabani and i am an assassin thumbs up if you want me to kill 240p tonight

  • I want to see Meshuggah play AC/DC, just to see what happens when guys who play nothing simple or in a straight beat play something that is incredibly simple and all in straight beats.

  • Boring, non musical, and totally lacks soul, especially the guitar playing. I'd be in hell if I had to play that shit! Glad to be a funk drummer. The drummer's got great chops and is busting his ass, so I can appreciate that. Just hate the style and that fucking annoying guitar.

  • @mjpitche The jam sesh was more geared towards drumming improv, the guitarist was just laying down riffs for the drummer to work on. You obviously haven't heard anything by Meshuggah, Fredrik is one of the greatest riff creators in history, he can make simplicity powerful like no other.

  • @mjpitche Non musical? It's totally rhythmical, and thats what its supposed to be. Its unique.

  • @mjpitche You sound like an Atheist

  • @mjpitche All due respect, but it would probably be worth knowing what you're talking about before posting: 1) This is for some kind of drumming showcase, so it makes sense for the guitar to be out of the way. 2) If you had heard the album these riffs are from, you would know that there are other instruments and they all provide "music". 3) If you knew the guitarist, you'd know that his style of music is all about exploring rhythm over than melody, hence the style. 4) "Soul" is a bullshit term.

  • @UshinawaLives It's more probable that the kids from tessaract listened to sol niger when they were writing their album ;]

  • 240p strikes again

  • 3:00 ITS OKAY...ITS...OKAY ... O_O

  • i love the contrast between the sharp and accurate sound of the guitar and the jazzy drumming

  • Why;s he got tape on the B string?

  • @Avalon888

Its the G string if hes in standard tuning and the lowest is tuned to B. But its

So the strings dont ring out. hes not using any of those strings. Hes only playing 4 strings. The drummer is the sick one though.

  • That is some incredibly complicated riffing to keep track of, especially when the drummer plays in a different time signature.

  • Wow what a great drummer... He looks a bit reserved at times but I'm sure I would be too playing that shit, amazing job also Fredrick

  • @Dominoes282 the drummer, Morgan Ågren, was nominated best fusiondrummer by Modern Drummer Magazine last year.

  • 5:08 FUCKING FACE MELTER :O

  • But it's not polyrhythms it's the guitar following the kick

  • @2323yomamma What about a cover superfan ?

  • Soo .. What's the point in playing a 7 string if you duct tape the last three strings

  • @HairyChronicJunior its because the 7th string is a low B, and its the thickest string on top. it has nothing to do with the high E or any addition to the last three strings

  • its just seems effortless, Polyrhythm's are one of the main things i struggle with

  • Whos the drummer?

  • @deftones720 Morgan Ågren

  • WOOOOW!!! poLYrhythms & progressions at its BEST!

  • Just IN-CREDIBLE! I can't find any words...

  • can i get this time back i jsut wasted?

  • @TheeAirworks lol, nope

  • TOKI!

  • trolls will troll and meshuggah will keep kicking ass, this is one of my favorite jam sessions on youtube right now. does anyone have anymore recommendations?

  • @ihaveaminkful You should try to find the album he made. Its got this song on it but the CD is like one giant song. Its awesome.

  • BOOOOOOOOOORRRIIIIIIIING

  • 1:05 he's like "mmmm well done you can keep up"

  • Ågren the drummer from hell!!

  • So over-rated.

  • @VYours

i thought that as well awhile back but when you just think about the crazy rhythms these guys can play its real talent. you might say "well i could play some of their songs". but the more impressive part of these guys are the things they create not so much the playing. personally i prefer a shredder like Alexi over Fredrik but you at least have to appreciate what Meshuggah does.

  • @VYours LooooL, how can you say they are over-rated? Most people have never heard of Mats/Morgan band or Morgan Ågren or Special Defects etc. They deserve all attention hands down, these guys are amazing.

  • @BertFlamingo I'm speaking about Meshuggah, not an individual or a side project.

  • @VYours I can not see why Meshuggah should not get attention either, Meshuggah created a new era, Meshuggah is the father of djent?

  • @BertFlamingo Even though all the so-called djent bands that Meshuggah supposed inspired are infinitely more entertaining, varied and technical bands.

  • @VYours Entertaining? Maybe that's up to the individual unless you can read other peoples minds. If you say that Meshuggah is not one of the most technical metal bands walking the earth then I hope that you've only woke up on the wrong side...

  • @BertFlamingo You have no idea what technical means if you think Meshuggah is one of the most technical bands on the planet.

  • Comment removed

  • @BertFlamingo argumentera inte på internet då :PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP

  • @VYours You are either a bad troll or a 15 year old who thinks playing out of key sweeps at 180bpm is creative. you have no sense of the syncopation or polyrhythmics involved with Meshuggah/SDFX/djent or the feel and percussive approach to this style of music. if you cant wrap your head around it, then go back to watching drummers smash the same cymbal/tom fill out over and over again. you will grow out of it like everyone else does

  • @VYours Apparently not given most "music" fans don't have a clue what kinda of metal this is nor how to listen or play it. So, fuck you?

  • @clipsryan All Meshuggah does is play very basic polyrhythms, and generally two riffs tops for an entire song. Especially their more recent work. I mean, you can go ahead and get upset over someone else's opinion, but Meshuggah being bland and generic is a fact. P.S. I play drums and polyrhythms are cake, especially if it's just 3 over 2 like almost everything they play. So, know what you're talking about?

  • @VYours I'm on my 10th year of playing drums and writing complete songs mostly prog based. It's so fucking retarded when you have a person who claims that a non-mainstream style of music writing is instantly over-rated and simple just because you claim to understand how to play them. You're an idiot (a fact) and I'm sure you couldn't write nearly half as good songs as Meshuggah. That's why you're on youtube talking shit about superior musicians and these musicians are doing what you can't.

  • @clipsryan You're been playing for a decade and think playing 3 over 2 makes someone talented? You must be horrible. I'm willing to bet you don't have any drum videos of yourself on your channel. Probably just some mouth-breathing Meshuggah fan lying to defend his band over the internet. Lol, get bent dude.

  • @VYours You're clearly an amateur. Complexity isn't what makes a good musician nor a great song. Creativity and originality is. If you understand ANY time signature, that doesn't mean it's instantly not a difficult or well thought out song. I bet you don't have any videos of yourself either though judging by your attention seeking comment, you just might be so insecure to have some. Yes, I'm a Meshuggah fan. I'm also a Behemoth fan and a Nile fan. I'm a secure fan of metal. Join the club.

  • @clipsryan Creativity and originality: two things not to be found in Meshuggah.

  • @VYours So you can point out a band that they sound exactly alike then? Fucking moron. See, unlike you, I know the bands I like are great. That's why I feel no need to be an attention whore and feed my insecurity by making a douchebag comment on a video I had no business watching. This is Sol Niger, not Meshuggah and considering both have 100 times the talent and credibility that you could only hope for, I'd shut the fuck up. Or not. It's your choice if you wanna look even dumber.

  • @VYours Saying Meshuggah isn't original is like... saying that crucifying Jesus was unoriginal. NOBODY did ANYTHING even remotely like Meshuggah at the time. :P

  • @xWattie831x I get what you're saying but they crucified a hell lot of people back then.

  • @IronAndMetal582 Fuck, analogies are not my forte.

  • @VYours WHAT THE HOLY FUCK?!!!! I showed meshuggah to my guitarteacher who studied music for ten years and then worked at an institute for new/modern music for 15 years. He was impressed. Do you understand what that means? OMG that was the most stupid thing I've heard in a while^^

  • @VYours you seem to know what you're talkin about. I've played guitar for around 11 years, and know how to play, but haven't really gotten into all this 'off-time' stuff. Findin it a bit hard to understand.

Could you just quickly explain the timing for the bit at 4:16? I don't get it. Thanks.

  • That's resourcefully ingenious to put duct tape on the the first few strings to perma-mute them. At least, I'm assuming that's what that is.

  • "jaw on floor"

  • ..guitarwork alone is nothing compared to this amazing drumwork..

  • It's Toki Wartooth!

  • @lahbl HA it is!

  • who's the drummer? haake?

  • @ATSpythit morgan agren

  • I could listen to this all day, every new riff he plays is more awesome than the last.

  • fucking hell. in a good way.

  • lol "dagens övning"...

  • toki?

  • Rage against the machine e rena dansbandet i jämförelse.

  • Förbannad musik........svår att spela också.....inget man blir gladare av.

  • Förbannad musik........

  • for them being two. They beat most metal i have ever heard!

  • Our daily regular "rythm" in life gets kicked off the rail by Meshuggah !!

  • I thought Morgan was one of the best drummers around.

    I was so wrong.

    He's MUCH BETTER! \m/

  • whats on his strings, tape??

  • @Guitaristscreamer yes, it is to reduce any string buzz off the high strings :P

  • lol everytime polyrythms come up someone mentions meshuggah even on the non metal meshuggah is there

  • Morgan is better than whoever recorded with Fredrik on this song, seirously.

  • EDOGG62 probably knows nothing about music

  • Impressive, but pointless.

  • is this fred before he started using all of those amp simulator thingies?

  • They actually play excerpts of the sol niger within album, only re-arranged. So it's not really a jam at all. Still fucking sweet.

  • I get it now. Toki is Fredrik.

  • @LeviathanHatred fred actually knows what he's playing.

  • yummy yummy, this is fukin chunky djenty groovy omg............love it!!!

  • they're just playing a song. u guys know that right?

  • @STDrocker40

No there not. They are jamming.

  • @ChainsawVsGod its called "sol niger". get owned

  • surprised there are no negative comments... i really don't see what people like so much about this band. unconventional time signatures are unconventional for a reason.

  • @kammo Unconventional? Depends on point of view... like if your point of view is "these time signatures are to hard and unconventional i'll just stick to the more common and conventional ones" or "oh this is an odd time signature... damn that seems challenging and fun and exciting".

I'm like the second example and from your comment i take it that you are more like the first example.

  • @kammo if you dont like it you dont like it. i for one find this jam entertaining to listen to. that should be enough for you

  • Oh Shit!! That's fucking Toki isn't it?!?!

  • does he tape his top 3 strings?

  • @murcadha

    to mute out unwanted notes

  • @murcadha

    Yep.

  • they don't use pedals anymore really.

  • Comment removed

  • lol I just noticed the guitarist sort of looks like Upham from Saving Private Ryan

  • Sorry, great talent and everything.... but I seem to be repeating 2:04 - 2:06 constantly!

  • i just love it how these rhythms rape your brain !

  • Hensomat:

that is duct tape to deaden the strings that he isnt using. Something like Soulfly, but he just plays with E,A,D and G strings.

  • 7 strings probably B E A D G B E

  • why does the guitarist has something fixed to the strings? ....

  • Thats fucking tight!

  • anyone know the equiptment thordendale uses on this it is such a beasty sound!!

  • He uses Line 6 amps, I think. I think it's just the video, though.

  • @anastu

yes, he uses the line 6 vetta II amp

  • Saw them live this summer, and I'm pretty sure he used something by Orange.

  • @SyvSto

    They use Axe FX

  • this was a while ago, so it could of still been the mesa dual rectifier days through some additional processing, not completely sure, but pretty positive they didnt use line 6 back then, only from the Nothing album onwards.

  • shit! crazy guitar and drums! meshuggah is the best!!

  • Meshuggah! We need you in Germany!!!!

We need a Kick ass Metal sound !!!

  • lol rammstein and meshuggah = 2 best things! XD

  • yeah!

  • It's just hard to believe that anyone could play so many rhythms at the same time. Sweet!

  • From 5:12 and on is some of the craziest shit I've ever heard on drums...

  • He also looks like he's getting of at that moment lol

  • No offense to any meshuggah fans but this is one of the sweetest pieces of music i ever heard. NICE

  • Villa Villa Kulla FTW.

  • who started this FTW bullshit?

  • @44eelz

    who cares? MESHUGGAH FTW!!!

  • @44eelz

    frederick thompsan wilson

  • @44eelz A hivemind called the internet. FREETHINKER DETECTED! ERROR ERROR ERROR ERROR

  • Villa villa kulla.

  • An amazing display of talent!

  • 1:34 to 1:44 = as heavy a 10 seconds out there!

  • i didnt know jesus and god were such amazing musicians HAHA. just kidding. frederik is a master of polyrthym. and morgan is obviously an amzing drummer to keep up with those riffs. FUCK YEA

  • about frederik and morgan.. perhaps its the other way around for what we know or can understand

  • @byfactorise remember they gave satan the gift of music..so if satan rules music, god dont cares!!! god is damned! bubbub, bubbubbub, bub, bub, bubbubbub!

  • god damn it

    what a beast

  • fuckin jazz trained musos sound so damn good.

  • great drums (nice guitar sound too)

  • Does he use Pearl Master series?

  • Best video ever.

  • If this is also a full song by the band, does anyone know the name. Early in the video it says "Sol Niger Within," but it didn't show up on iTunes.

  • This is a combination of a bunch of their songs. This is very unknown by people and probably won't be on itunes. You should try to download the whole album using a bit torrent program.

  • Get the album Sol Niger Within by Fredrik Thordendals special Defects. This is made up of various parts from alot of the songs from the album. Get the album anyway, its one of my favorites albums ever (not that that means much ha ha).

  • Sol Niger will show you a whole new level of Fredrick. My advice is to not listen to this album in the dark, alone, and high on drugs. Small mistake, but the best album I own

  • I'm guessing you didn't mean to say that to me ha ha.

  • why not listen to it in the dark ?

  • Its frightening to say the least.

  • where did you get the album?

  • cool

  • whats the tape on his guitar for?

  • To mute the bottom strings.

  • ...to look cool

  • poo. this is good

  • his eight string sounds better

  • fuckin amazin
