See 'cash for clunkers', they pour some sodium silicate in the oil, rev them for a few minutes and they're history. Old cars are lethal to drivers but the styling still appeals!
I have a 1995 XJ12. I have spent more than i can ever afford to keep it on the road and friends say it a lemon and not worth the money. I tell them exactly what you said....It makes me feel fantastic when driving it! To me its worth every penny.
I crashed my xj6 series 1 last weekend and i've already fixed almost the entire damage, the front right wing and door were completely smashed, thankfully it wasn't damaged mechanically...
As a 2001 Jag owner - I can safely put my hand on my heart and say I agree with every word you said. Despite one or two "god I'm funny" comments below I think your commentary was actually rather well put. My your old girl run on and on
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old PRV Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps EFi and tank clean and rustfree
Jaguar will never make another car as good as the series 1, this looks a lovely example, let me know if you want to sell it, your tax has run out now, you need to sorn it if your not taxing it or the DVLA will be after you!!!!
...so thanks for sharing your Series 1 experience. I have had Series 3 Sovereign/XJ40/X300 Sport and now a 2006 aluminium XJ6. I have one dissapointment with my latest XJ - the ride on your Series 1 is much smoother. Sound crazy? The computerised suspension does not deliver the traditional Jag ride that I enjoyed right thru to my X300. In your car you can hear the potholes, but not feel them - in mine, it slams into them. Otherwise, build quality etc is sensational. Happy V12 motoring...
@aaadoors , i have a newish S-type and i fine the ride to harsh and un jag like too , but having said that it is a great car and i love it , i just love all jags
Ford almost killed the legendary Jaguar car company! I just hope the Indian company that bought them brings back the class and history that is and makes Jaguar such an art on wheels.
@jacklee2010 how did they almost kill em ford dumped over 5 billion into the company in 1989 to bring them from the 1940's factory to the state of the art facilities they use today Ford saved Jaguar and made the last true Jaguar and the most reliable the X300 series
you could get upto £1000 for this old Leyland smoker under the governments scrappage scheme. Just imagine a nice shiny panda in your garage or them kias are quite nippy.
Wow GTVAlfaman that is incredible. These cars are far too good to let rot - which is exactly what would happen if they were just left in the UK elements. JonQ
Nice Series 1 you have there. I have a 1980 XJ6 S3 myself that I am working on. By the way, to all you guys in England, you can pick up a Jaguar XJ6 here in Southern California for a song, I have seen people give them away just to get them out of their driveway. These cars in California have no rust and you can get them for almost nothing here.
awesum car, mines in a pretty bad state at the moment, paints stuffed, the interior is falling apart and some bits missing, but you are 100% right about them being special cars.. driving it becomes an occasion/ an event, people looking at ya when u drive past.. its a good feeling
oh and i plan on doing a ground up resto to it soon.. its 40years old and i think it deserves it...
The XJ6 is surely the most beautiful saloon ever made, and yours is very fine looking despite the dust. Please make a video from outside the garrage!!!
XJ6 to Jon: "Thanks for the kind words, but I wouldn't mind seeing a car-wash from the inside every once in a while, making me look even better and shiny!"
My father used to own one of these and my god was it beautiful, Jon, you are very lucky to be a proud owner of such a quality classic car.....good video!
That's a beautiful series 1 my friend. Well, what's your verdict on the new car? Personally I think it's a total mess. I am a Jaguar fanatic for years and years and have owned a 3.2 X308 Sport. I loved the low profile and the clean simple lines from series 1 right through to the x350 (although I always thought the x350 to be a bit tall and bulky in comparrison to the x 300/308). But this new car is a fierce mish mash of styles, snout of a Volvo, Citroen C6 from the side and a fat Cadillac Rear.
English cars are shit,sorry...unreliable shit.....Looks nice though, but still shit

I'm thinking of buying a XJ6 series 1, absolutely love the styling, my only worry is, just how unreliable are these cars?

Old casrs can be very reliable, but sadly old Jags are not. Nice cars, though.

Series 1 is my favourite Jaguar XJ. Thanks for sharing. If I could afford it, I'd have a Series 1 V12 or series 2 V12 LWB.

I believe that Jaguar should not become more like its German rivals but instead insisting on its British heritage.

Can I ask you, you mentioned £180 for a year's road tax? Is that classic tax?
Im living in Ireland and as im sure you know we pay among the highest road tax rates....€1,500 per anum on my previous 3.2 Jag.
athlonian11 2 years ago
classic tax in england is for vehicles registered before 1973 and is free.
This is a 1973 model so has to pay £180 per year. classic tax in eire is for 30 year old vehicles so this would qualify and only cost 48 euro.
hope this helps

.Shes 73 so its 48 euro a year road tax in Ireland.Vintage tax.
