  • supernatural so brought me here!

TEAM DEAN! (because were almost the same others have told me this)

  • listen to my name is death by the incredible string band

  • Not like this will get thumbs up.

Thumbs up if the band O'death brought you to watch this.

  • he doesnt even need music to make this song awesome.

  • It's an erie song, but it's also oddly comforting... he manages to put the fear of death into words anyone can relate to. we all fear death, and we all live in dread of those icy fingers...and Ralph Stanley gives us a song we can listen to and share that fear...thats what music is supposed to do :D

  • @wbnc66 only the weak minded fear death... pussy

  • @TheToastie1

LOL, hope ya have a long wait to find out if you're one of us weak minded fools.....

  • Awesome!!!! Love to see Ralph sing the man's side and someone else sing death's part

  • this is good, but i wish i could find the lloyd chandler version...

  • this song is amazing

  • Thumbs up if you wish for another year in spite

  • thumbs up if Adolf Hitler brought you here (:

  • Have consider having this played at my funeral as well.

  • @afton1955 seriously? this seems like the most depressing song to possibly play at a funeral. There's no resolution, no closure, no acceptance. It's about someone who is desperate to continue living as he reflects on the horror and tragedy of death. And that's the memory you want to leave with your loved ones?

Well, it's up to you i guess. It is such a beautiful song. I don't know how many people other than Ralph Stanley could do it this kind of justice though.

  • I want this played at my funeral.

  • The leader of the KKK in O'brother where art thou sings this song before they lynch the black guy

  • @evilskater052 They used Ralph Stanley's voice in the movie.

  • @evilskater052 If you really paid attention to that particular scene the black guy was not lynched.

  • Reminds me of "Grinin´ in your face" from Son House

  • nice, but the spn version of jen titus is better, it's reallyyyyy creepy :p

  • what the ** is this? it is terrible

  • wow. haunting. he has the voice of a man looking death in the eye. brilliant. thank you for sharing this. thank you, and thanks to ralph.

  • i aint kkk or nothin but i love this song!

  • @isaac0333 This song has nothing to do with the KKK. It was used in the movie O Brother. That is its only connection to the KKK.

  • @nancejo The best part about the whole thing is that "Oh, Death" was recorded by Charley Patton in 1934. Its a guy (sung by stanely) in a KKK outfit singing Charley Patton. Perfect....

  • to gamhse to tragoudaki

  • @sakvouagiaz polli grafoun oti tous arese.. prepi na akoun allo kommati =p

  • He actually song it good, leave it alone people.

  • He has a voice that you can only get from time and living....Love it

  • absolute classic

  • Lol

  • *claps* :)

  • that's a funny old man who sings about death:()

  • @kingchriz199 It's not funny. When he first started singing it, obviously he was younger. How could you be so rude and disrespectful? He may be elderly, but he never forgot where he came from. Maby sence he has gotten older, he sang it to ask god to let him live another day. Leave here and go listen to your new country music. I'll stay back here, with Watson and Ralph.

  • @GEZx928 OK sry for my disrespectful behave myself im really sry long life this ralphi

  • I looked it up from O Brother

  • @gcrambo Supernatural is great and all, but O Brother is better. ;D

  • My grandfather died at 101, but he sure wasn't singing "spare me over to another year".. quite the opposite.. if he had, he have live to 110 at least..... but God rest his soul. . An absolutely haunting version here by Ralph Stanely- A1

  • ....That wasn't even the full song...hissss

  • old people are soo old...

  • This man is just plain to old to sing. I listen to all kinds of music and this guy might of been good at one point but he should maybe put the mic down and focus on living. Hes to lispy. its annoying.

  • @Cexification you have no idea what you are commenting on...please get educated about the subject you wish to make statements about...lol's

  • @Cexification There's a certain quality of voice that you only can get with older voices that's valued in folk music traditions, mainly because they listen to and respect their elders. Maybe you could try listening to your elders sometime instead of just dismissing their voices as too old to have any value.

  • Amazing just simply amazing.

  • Sounds like I'm back in Beanblossom Indiana....beautiful

    1

  • Sounds like a dying cat....

  • @RoFlMaOpMsLbBq Wow, you people really don't understand how amazing this is do you? His voice may be rough but that just lends something to this song. A young, little chubby faced ten year old doesn't fit this song. It fits an old soul, like most folk music. Your tastes must be dulled by auto tune where everyone sounds like a dying robot.

  • @UkeFoxx my taste is not mainstream 8 year olds. and also this song is bloody terrible, my mate thinks its funny and we just bag the fucker out because he's a dumb cunt

  • Thx. Not sure what brought me here I have managed to lol with this for many yrs and am now have this over whelming feeling of being stuck in the middle, life is a very fine wire to stroll on in a "normal" world as it is ,but now "IT" pushes me hard sometimes and it HURTS to smile back ? have NEVER gave up or gave in to anything ,ever ,but with pain, confusion, memory loss the HURT has become reality ,my rambling above was a persons response to seizures, sleepwalking ,sounds HURT Rick

  • " YOU STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ME YA HEAR" Thanks I awoke suddenly 2.a.m.? pain? confusion? broken? Medication SUCKS I'd rather be an addict again.breathing color, feeling in reds and yellows, taste in silver like metal hearing ,blue gray, fading, I would like to SCREAM but then others will know, burning? cold?afraid to lay down ,haunting dreams, can only smile with eyes closed, pushing, pulling, from the inside,I am pissing "IT" off, clear but numb,a fishbowl, sleep while standing? HURT? NO, LIFE Rick

  • Almost overwhelming for many we all just wait! can we see IT,I live every day in redemption but when? why the wait? when I peek over the side will IT pull me IN or or will "IT" push me OVER? "IT' hovers over moves around ,front and back, I smiled and waved "IT" slammed me to the ground, My soul smiles my gate is frozen,I lost my ticket, The more steps I take away from the gate the harder IT pushes me back, REDEMPTION IS FINE-WAITING IS HELL! Rick

  • Great! I also hear the resemblance to a first nation chant/song. Similar tonality and rhythmic cadence. Very beautiful!

  • o'brother is better than that supernatural shit!!

  • @jojohernandez14 PFFFT! You wish! Supernaturals version of the song RAPED this one! That man sounded like a dying cat yowling his last breaths! You seriously need to look into a hearing aid dude if you actually for one moment believed that THIS was better the Jen Titus' rendition!

  • @littleaprilroses

idk,the chanting in the jen titus version ruins it.

he sings it without any backing up of instruments or otherwise.

    but,jen's version pretty chilling to.

btw please lets not start a fight over these versions.

  • @littleaprilroses lmfao ur tryin to compare a Ralph Stanley song with a supernaturals version.....

  • @Hatemachine1990 personaly i like jen tituses version better then an old guy struggling to sing it and her version is more known

  • @littleaprilroses

lol you are a fool.. grow up a little and then come back. There would be no Jen Titus's version if it wasn't for this amazing artist right here.

  • I can think of a few places on the planet where this song is more than appropriate.

Even been to a few of those places..

    ..even bled there.

  • gives me goose bumps :)

  • gives me goose bumps:)

  • Hey Grandpa, did it work?

  • Sounds like a Native American religious chant. What soul.

  • So good!

  • i don't even like bluegrass and i am just completely amazed

  • thumbs up if supernatural brought you to watch this :)

  • @MrJORDYISHERE i looked this up due to lauren o connell

  • This is fantastic. I only discovered this song last week. This guy is great.

  • This song is amazing. and he did a great version of it. I tip my hat to this man

  • If you love blue grass you gotta love this guy, what a gem.

  • The best part about this: Live performance, everyone is dead quiet.

  • @questmaster9 good song just not for you it would seem

  • Folks, it just doesn't get any better than this.

  • Can anyone explain to me how this sounds remotely good? It just sounds like any other person singing it, also his voice is too shakey.

  • @youboob6022 fuck u

  • @shropshire1000 At least type you properly if you're going to try and insult me.

  • @youboob6022 I'm gonna have to agree there. it's not bad but nothing special either.

  • @youboob6022 Its' Appalachian Folk music you asshole. It's supposed to sound shakey. Also, can't you see the guy is like 80 years old? Thats why it sounds good, you smart ass.

  • ele é morte, ta com cara de morto já! AHEAUHEUAHEUAHUE! mais é uma boa versão! ainda prefiro jen titus cantando!

  • Lauren O' Connwl O Death is the best one

  • @Cromaxor hers is nice but this sends chills up my spine.

  • Sweet!

  • I love his voice :)

  • what.

  • Ralph is my Great Uncle. He played this and a couple of other songs at my great grandmothers funeral (Agnes Poland) about 6 or 7 years ago. We were in he funeral home still when he played. He stood in front, to the side of the casket like he was on stage. He did a couple of songs before this one with 2 elderly women accompanying him w guitars. They were all deeply religious folks and come from the hills. They played music their whole lives, and it showed. This really is a cool song!

  • @CoreyGrumbling is he really? this song.. it's haunting, errie.. i love it

  • @CoreyGrumbling he is an amaising talent.. esp singing this.

  • absolutely beautiful...absolutely haunting..I dont think this requires much more elaboration.

  • @drunkirishbastard1 its very nice and all but i like the updated version more, not trying to dis Mr. Stanley he seems to be a really good bluegrass singer. when i say updated one I mean the Jen Tit one

  • i love this in obrouther where art though

  • I am a fan of CW's Supernatural.. and I heard their version for the show (Jen Titus - Oh Death).

this original version is good :]

Jen Titus' version is spookier though.. & I like it.

  • Hi Face expresses it all.... :(

  • Great song.

  • Stanley write this song or is it an old folk song? Either way, it'll always give me the shivers -- in a good way, of course.

  • vera hall - death have mercy

  • @billyshake Doing a Google search it appears "O DEATH" was written by British Blues singers Jo-Ann Kelly and Tony McPhee.

  • @Jibbie49 No it wasnt. Dock Boggs recorded the song 20 years before Tony McPhee was born. Its a classic. No credited writer. Like Man of Constant Sorrow. No one can claim to have written it, only to have sang it best.

  • My first show i can remember is going to see Ralph Stanley on Three top mt. when i was a kid. Ive always loved it here in the Blue Ridge Mts been my home for 28 years, seen alot changes.

  • Ralphy-kins is now 83 summers long so when he sings the song these days - he means it!

  • I suppose his being that old has really added a lotta meaning to the song as well -- and the shakier his voice, the better it sounds. Kinda like Cash's last albums in that respect. There's something about the singing voice of old men that just works.

  • Odd comparison, but yes indeed. Joe Strummer will be singing this on the road to hell owlrite! (with Chris Rea)

  • He is great. I'd say he is God of bluegrass as well. Which is different than God of creations :P

  • God of Bluegrass totally

  • goosebumps

  • this song is just wonderful. it scares me but it is so believable.

  • I unequivocally agree...God he is not....but his vocals are definatly blessed by HIM!!!

    Ralph Stanley is THE MAN!

  • A haunting song.....but so wonderful when it comes from him...the GOD of bluegrass.....
