I have practiced TKD for just under 3 years...I'v learned that it teaches you not how to fight, but also how to avoid a fight. I agree with Rhee when he says that martial artists are losing respect for the sport and forgetting where it came from. I recommend Tkd to anyone who wants to learn how to defend themselves!!
I've done tkd for years and transitioned into kickboxing and now jiu jitsu a year ago. We don't see tkd implemented much in mma because there's a lot of flashy kicks (wheel kicks or spinning back kicks) which could open you up for take downs. But tkd taught me to have quick reflexes, to be explosive(hip escapes), and flexibility. Every martial arts contributes to different combat situations you may be in or adds on an advantage when learning a new martial art. My tkd days weren't a waste of time
almost every style can be effective in self defence, it depends on the instructor and more important on yourself (determination, application), I say that not because I do tkd, i've done yoseikan budo, jujitsu and kickboxing. It happened to fight against tkd athletes some years ago. Sometimes i won sometimes i lost that's life.
Great video and a great man. I think he must be referring to WTF TKD when he says they don't punch. I do the original style of TKD - ITF and we punch as well as kick. He is right about a lack of respect amoungst martial artists who think their style is superior. Unfortunately there are a lot of politics in some martial arts which goes against the fundamental teachings of the arts.
This is a great interview. I am a Pe teacher who also teaches TKDo and studied judo in college. I agree that the tournament scene is a circus and that tradition in everything in this wonderful country is being lost to the dollar. This is seen in public school and the dojang! Values are being dunbed down to make kids successful without instilling the work ethic that built this country. It starts at home parents should not expect everyone else to do the hard work of leading by example:)
WOW I LIKE THIS, i love his films, i think hes so cute, to,but i agree with everythink he just said, i wish i lernt how to do martial arts, but shame i wasnt aloud to, but he amazing
I like him very much, and respect by this time...My first and last dream is to see him,and join to his club, where may be i can learn hapkido...Suppa interview))
Rhee is a very good teacher for tkd. I prefer Japanese style karate like wado ryu or shotokan. Those are more for sparring and kata. Tkd and Kung Fu are more self defense
It's nice to hear an opinion from a martial artists who isnt completley conceded in wat he does, all TKD around my area advertise themselves as the ultimate or superior martial art and turn out some pretty bad practitoners, he is definately the kind of teacher people need cause he teaches wat he says, self-defense, and i respect Phillip Rhee alot both as an actor and martial artist. Thumbs up!!!
Used to do Tae Kwon Do, great for fitness and flexibility. However ineffective for self- defence due to training methods. Just curious, why do people choose to practice TKD instead of other martial arts? if anyone want's to answer please do, I like to debate.
for the tournaments and for the great kicks but to be fair different teachers have different ways some think only of olympic type training because a lot of them came from that but i come across great teachers as well who cover most aspects of fighting even the best ways in kicking in an actual fight which is very different from basics training also most people don't wait to pick the fruits of training some teachers wait a while before going deep and you have to tell the trainer what you want
@warrlic2 Well because 90% of tkd schools are heavily focused on tradition, ITF, TAGB etc. It's all about the syllabus and getting the black belt that everyone is fixated on. Most techniques would be effective, I mean a side kicks a side kick whatever martial art you do, but tkd doesn't prepare you for the street, not physical enough. Doing patterns has no benefit what so ever for fighting. I happen to do BJJ now which although not a complete system is far more effective for combat.
@TheG1NGAN1NJA Wow, You Clearly Have Never Studied True Taekwondo, To Already Consider The Art To Be Ineffective For Self-Defence Just Proves That You Were Probably Never Good At All. Pretty Sad, If You Ask Me. You Must Have Had A Horrible Teacher That Only Cared About MONEY! Real Taekwondo FROM KOREA Is VERY Effective In A Fight And In Fact Can Kill! All Martial Arts Are Effective!!! No Martial Art is THE BEST.
@TheG1NGAN1NJA I found Krav Maga to be more effective for self defence. It treaches how to defend against multiple attackers, and weapon disarming...... More relevant to what could happen in everyday life.... when is there ever a 1 on 1 now a days??? or even if there was, how many times have you heard of or seen someone glassed or bottled????
@TheG1NGAN1NJA Depends on your school and instructer. I have used TKD successfully many times. We would test ourselves often. But I am not a WTF type. I punch as often or more often than kick. In the past 20 years I have seen most TKD focus on the sport aspect. This is not what I have learned and teach to my kids. Plus any real martial artist will cross train as I did.
@TheG1NGAN1NJA 2 kinds of Taekwondo, World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) and International Taekwon-do Federation (ITF). WTF is the sport used for Olympics. ITF, which on the other hand is called Martial Arts. Taekwon-do is a composition of kick (tae) and punch (kwon) in which ITF practitioners are good at. WTF only uses their feet in any tournament or competition and MUST be wearing full body armor unlike in ITF, they DON"T wear any armor at all except for gloves, groin guard and kicking shoes.
@TheG1NGAN1NJA it dont matter about the martial art u do its all the same thing it all depends of your training and your master. it is effective if u know how to use the texhniques/
I practised Taekwondo for 2 and a half year and I have used it in self defense to protect both myself and my friend. Its far from ineffective. You learn to punch, to kick, to throw and lock. You learn to block punches and kicks and to get out of many diffrent grabs and chokes. At the same time you improve your steanght, speed, flexibility and stamina. All good things when it comes to defending yourself.
@SpinDoctor91 Yeah I loved Philip in the Best of the Best series. What I love here is he actually acknowledges that TKD has advantages and disadvantages, just like any other single martial art. I hate when people from any fighting art or method try to pump their chest up as if their art is perfect or the best. If martial arts are made by humans, who are imperfect, then how can the art itself be perfect? It of course can be excellent at what it does best, but such pride is counter-productive.
I am in fact considering training in a similar combination of MAs, except that instead of Hapkido i'll probably take Judo. (there is only one Hapkido-dojang in my vicinity and somehow i don't like the training there) Also Judo has the advantage of having ground-fighting in it (in case somebody tries to tackle you down).
Back on Topic: Great interview, it's good to see a really great MA-Teacher who takes the way of nonviolence seriously!
Pretty crazy this guy did movies at all considering what he really loves in life, teaching martial arts. Being an actor is not exactly the same as training students.
He is a true martial artist. I've met Master Rhee many times and as a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu guy myself I learned to appreciate his art and respect what they're trying to acomplish. Also he's OPEN MINDED, which you don't always see with many "Traditional" martial arts so called masters.
I wish Master Rhee the best and continued success esp today when it's so difficult to weed out those that truly want to be "Martial Artitsts' vs "Fighters"
@GuardianAngel5150 please don't insult the Traditional masters cause if they changed it up then it lost the meaning of the styles cause then you'd just add anything which works. This is not Jeet Kun Do. What if they added grappling to tai chi? It would ruin the point of that style no? I do agree with you that Phillip is doing a good thing cause Tae Kwon Do don't have much hand moves.
Phillip Rhee talks about martial arts in a way that I respect and which I think best represents the discipline.
I personally practise Shotokan karate and all the best people I've met within that style speak and act exactly like Rhee. I also have some friends who practise Tae Kwon Do and it's clear to me they love to train and live the life of a martial artist.
If we begin and end everything in life with respect, we won't go far wrong!
he is the reason that i started tae kwon do 10 years ago... i still do a 5 hours practice every day i am not trying to be a champion even if i am in my country. i loved the art of tae kwon do and the reason is he. this art gave me many things that i cant write cos i don't know so good english. but the true thing is that this art made me more mature.with more selfrespect.and manny other things, and remember.learn tae kwon do not for fight.. but for knowlege and living.thiseas school of TKD-Greece
I took Shito-Ryu Karate for about a year, and the instructors liked to degrade Tae Kwon Do. I later joined a Tae Kwon Do class, and I learned quite a bit gained good skill. I always thought that the "rivalry" among styles that Rhee talked about was pretty dumb. Different styles are better than others IN SOME RESPECTS, but I don't think I'd say any is "superior." It just depends on what you want to do. Also, blending styles can be great, too, like Rhee said.
great guy man. his brother simon, and him are wonderful martial artist. i'm a blackbelt in shotokan, and i admire him for implementing different skills into tae kwon do which is very intelligent of him. i've added alot to shotokan also. i wish him, and simon the best.
That's awesome man. And yeah that hook kick at 5:10 is great. I was at training and trying hook kicks for the first time and really struggled to get it high :) Next time.
Is the guy at 1:58 Phillip Rhee's brother? I think he was the guy in Best Of The Best with the eye patch. But anyway, Phillip Rhee is a very good representative for taekwondo.
I had the honor of training under him for 8 years. He is a great mentor and I miss tae kwon do dearly. The confidence and self honor I learned was priceless
TKD which i practised under i t f ....has a lot of striking and punching aswell as kicking.. so i disagree there... afterall tae kwon do means the art of kick/strike and punch....but yes its more famous for the jumping kicks...high kicks etc.
i think its a good idea they put western boxing with tkd i quite tkd when i was 13 but seing philips classes makes me wanna joine againg good excersise
que estilo de lucha de taekwondo esta utilizando el maestro rhee? a mi me parece el estilo ITF mas utilizando que el estilo WTF asi yo lo veo es un gran maestro de taekwondo viva el taekwondo...
I used to beat him and Tanney up at the DC school. But then I was 10 years older than him. Great to see you Phillip. How's Jane and Helen? Kudos on your new school. I am happy to see you doing so well. Good luck.
I used to beat him and Tanney up on the weekends but then I was at least 10 years older than him. Great to see you all grown up Phillip. Congrats on your school.
For the record, Jhoon Rhee is not Philip Rhee's father. I have been a student of Grandmaster Jun Chong and Master Philip Rhee since 1980. The school is located in the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles. They both are still very active teachers, and their students have themselves become very accomplished martial artists as well.
i started going to jun chong tkd in 94' n master rhee still teaches there cept now hes so good hes actually scary to spar like without even doing anything. and by the way if anyone is looking for jun chong tkd and cant find it its becuz we just moved across the street and like a block down wilshire towards downtown.
Avean what you said has great truth and I also agree with Phillip as well. I do see that among the martial arts world there is alot of disrespect. Alot of them have even adopted a gang mentality. And MMA is as you forementioned, is really not making it any better. They really don't fight out of respect, they fight out of malice and to beat the crap out of other people. Thats also not the purpose. Mutual exchange and perfection of knowledge is the purpose of martial arts...all styles.
There's a person who smashes rocks really well and there's a person who can make a life-like sculpture out of a rock. Neither might be able to do what the other does as well, neither should denigrate the other.
u guys are right and all but its just like other things in the world like racism or woteva its the worst thing in the world and it shud stop but will it actually i dont no i allways catch my karate sensei down talking other styles not to the whole group but just to the side it sucks....
Really important message he gave there, he is absolutetely right. It seems many within different fighting styles are bitter enemies right now. Many disrespects traditional martial arts, and cheering on MMA as the perfect style. Dont know why, it shouldnt be like this. Victory is not defined by your style, its defined by you. As Bruce Lee said, never bind yourself to one style.
I saw Jun Chong teaching there. Phillip Rhee, Simon Rhee, Jun Chong and Loren Avedon certainly should've done some more movies together. Damn shame they haven't done that many movies.

TKD which i practised under i t f ....has a lot of striking and punching aswell as kicking.. so i disagree there... afterall tae kwon do means the art of kick/strike and punch....but yes its more famous for the jumping kicks...high kicks etc.

Clear and concise with thoughts and direction. Clearly any form of martial arts will benefit from leaders of this calibre's.
We learn and grown, this is why we study the art, regardless of origin

I used to beat him and Tanney up at the DC school. But then I was 10 years older than him. Great to see you Phillip. How's Jane and Helen? Kudos on your new school. I am happy to see you doing so well. Good luck.

I used to beat him and Tanney up on the weekends but then I was at least 10 years older than him. Great to see you all grown up Phillip. Congrats on your school.

is he related to Jhoon Rhee?
USNCorpsman 3 years ago
Some folks say they're not related. But, I do believe they actually are ie father and son.
jessevoidable 3 years ago
For the record, Jhoon Rhee is not Philip Rhee's father. I have been a student of Grandmaster Jun Chong and Master Philip Rhee since 1980. The school is located in the Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles. They both are still very active teachers, and their students have themselves become very accomplished martial artists as well.
flipkick1 3 years ago
So sir, do you know if Master Phillip is related to Jhoon Rhee at all? Also, do you know if Master Phillip ever talks about Bruce Lee? Thanks.

everything he said was brilliant.....

Neither might be able to do what the other does as well, neither should denigrate the other.

u guys are right and all but its just like other things in the world like racism or woteva its the worst thing in the world and it shud stop but will it actually i dont no i allways catch my karate sensei down talking other styles not to the whole group but just to the side it sucks....

jessevoidable 3 years ago
did he makes other movies?
jaswantian 3 years ago
Really important message he gave there, he is absolutetely right. It seems many within different fighting styles are bitter enemies right now. Many disrespects traditional martial arts, and cheering on MMA as the perfect style. Dont know why, it shouldnt be like this. Victory is not defined by your style, its defined by you. As Bruce Lee said, never bind yourself to one style.
Avean 3 years ago 3
I saw Jun Chong teaching there. Phillip Rhee, Simon Rhee, Jun Chong and Loren Avedon certainly should've done some more movies together. Damn shame they haven't done that many movies.
