  • Oh My! You were in Chuncheon!! I LOVE Chuncheon!!! I just visited a month ago. Absolutely, beautiful!!!

  • @geonna75 I got to live there for a year and it is truly one of Korea's nicest cities.

  • @Tamar1973 You are a beautiful picture of the norse gene. I think you are sexy, and I would like to take you for a date caveman style. Tell me, does the carpet match the curtains??

  • haha i appreciate the storyline

  • Great video, I first had this BBQ about 10yrs ago and loved it. Ive been making it on my own from guessing what the ingredients are and it's been hit and miss so I'm excited to make them proper. Also, I was way off on the cook time. thanks for sharing/posting this.

  • Americans are "flocking" to korean resturants for the BBQ , really ? where I don't see em flocking to nothing korean

  • @FreeFunnChicago Korean food is very popular and trendy right now. Must need some prescription glasses.

  • @FreeFunnChicago ..You suck!!! You should get out more!!! LMFAO!!!

  • this is fuckin stupid i didn't even finish the video!

  • @paintbrawl I'm sorry your ADHD is acting up, I'm sure there's some ritalin for that.

  • thanks for the apple tip. your vid made me so hungry I am on my way to get some Kalbi right now. lol

  • wow,you sound like Jodie foster, nice recipe, might try it tonight.

  • you pronuce it nashi (na-a-shi)

  • @Fluffybunniezful

no you don't. its なし (na-shi) dumbass

  • @EX2296 It was a typo, calm the fuck down.

  • Hey Tamar - great video - I also love Korean food and cook it all the time (kalbi, deungshim-gui, bulgogi, keotjeori, kimchi, kongnamul muchim, etc.). I am also planning to take a year off school and go to (hopefully Incheon,) Korea to teach English. Was your experience there good?

  • @vlnvlaclogbaerhpno Yes, my experience in Korea was very good. However, if you want to come to Korea to teach English, do some research on the school before you come over to make sure the schools has a good reputation.

  • The Korean WAVE!? Dammit. They take over our pop music and now this!?

    Tae Yang you fiend.

  • this is such a nice videos that you made ..thanks for making it

  • well they did come out with "THE LAST SAMURAI MOVIE" starring a white man....whats next? the last negro on earth starring tom hanks??

  • @CindyxGxRose Please don't drink and post. It's unbecoming.

  • @CindyxGxRose She is not an idiot. Just as in any country, there is not only one way to make things. And she did not say that Korean is the master of Asian food. I prefer a different recipe for Kalbi, but this does not mean this one is wrong.

  • @CindyxGxRose She did not say that Koreans (notice an apostrophe is unnecessary) are the masters (notice an 's' is necessary) of Asian food. She said "Koreans are the undisputed masters of Far East Asian barbecue". And Tamar1973 is correct.

  • @CindyxGxRose

lol she didn't say Koreans are the masters of Asian food, you're the idiot on drugs xD

  • @CindyxGxRose I guess someone's just jealous ;)

I'm just 14 years old, even I find this interesting. And guess what?

    I'M ASIAN >:c

  • Nice video. Sometimes I can't get Asian pears in my little town, so I substitute Bosc (taste and consistency is similar) or even thrown in some mashed kiwi in a pinch. I only wish I could find flanken ribs that weren't so heavily marbled. All the ones I've seen are riddled with huge veins of fat, but the ones in the restaurant are very lean. Go figure.

  • @saprater25 You do have to look around to find good ribs. I've found them at Korean grocery stores (obviously) but I was surprised to find them readily available at Mexican grocery stores, too.

  • @saprater25 my mom uses kiwis or sometimes even apples when we dont have asian pears at home and they still come out tasty :P so i think thats finee

  • Very exciting background music...don't know if it makes me want to eat or workout........:-)

  • Clarice Starling....??

  • wtf...i expected a hot korean cougar....red head hippie cooking korean...wtf is goin on

  • @pogisiG LoL! redheaded hippie

  • My Korean friend said you can also use cola as substitute for Korean pear right?

  • @drsnowmon There is a kalbi recipe on YouTube posted by a Korean lady that does substitute cola for Korean pear. The coca-cola is a good tenderizer and if you like to drink a particular brand of cola, I'm sure you'll like it in your Kalbi.

  • @Tamar1973

    Ok thanx =)

  • @Tamar1973 I loved this tip & Korean food! My Korean mother did this trick (I'm half Korean, part German, & part Lithuanian). As a kid I thought she was crazy over Coca-Cola or something. Kids listen up mama knows best!

  • This is a very well done cooking lesson. The important points are organized and explained in a straight forward manner. I find the directions easy to follow. You did a wonderful job in introducing this famous dish to the rest of us. Thank you!

  • lol, the background music sounded like some military flick.

  • @flameout12345 Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi (The Legend) was a Korean TV drama aired in 2007. It's a historical drama about one of Korea's most famous kings, called Gwanggaeto the Great. The OST is the basis for most of the music.

  • Thanks for the vid...I really enjoyed it :D

  • THIS SHIT IS THE BEST!!!

  • so amateurish like a year at the culinary institute plus imagine that huge red bush?

  • @haveagoodun1 To be called an "amateur" by a loser like you is a complement. Go make a few videos yourself than you might have an opinion worth considering.

  • Did you eat all by yourself?

    that's a lot! of meat...

  • @Chadz88 No, I share it with my film crew. : )

  • Tamar well put.. it s very funny how people are so edger to criticize an American for speaking about our country and what influence's we have here. I am so glad that you posted your video. You have made it easy for the average person to understand what is needed to make this dish. THANK YOU

  • l like your hair color

  • typical american...u know other countries are becoming influenced by korean food right, and not just usa? le sigh

  • @SSNietzsche I can only talk about what I know. If you think the "korean wave" in your country isn't getting enough coverage on YouTube, then get out your video camera and do it yourself instead of whining here!

  • @Tamar1973 Tamar well put.. it s very funny how people are so edger to criticize an American for speaking about our country and what influence's we have here. I am so glad that you posted your video. You have made it easy for the average person to understand what is needed to make this dish. THANK YOU

  • i love this shit, now I want kalbi! she reminds me of a celebrity, but i'm not sure of the name

  • you guys are so behind :o u guys never had sweet pear

  • Thanks for the Soju tip! I should try that part out. I can't believe I didn't think of that one before!

  • That's some epic music for some epic food!

  • thank you

  • mmmm that's making me hungry!!!! looks LUSH!

  • love the orange hair...very sexy. a woman who looks good and more importantly COOKS GOOD!

  • Sweet meet ?? that's gross ..some nations can't cook anything without adding fucking sugar in it

  • better then those typical claim jumpers, mcdonalds, even high dining restaurants that overloads their shit with SODIUM trans fats BUTTER. ARTIFICAL FLAVORING and all the shit that makes you retarded and cancerous later on in life =P. Its nation of fatasses fer rizzles dawg. other countries all use some kind of sweetener to balance out their dishes so idk wtf you smoking thinking nations dont go adding sweet stuff to their meat. PS pass the joint if ur really blazin =D

  • I've never cooked with pear juice.

  • Every family has different recipes. It was years before I got my mother-in-laws which has been mastered over many years. It also has a secret ingredient and it is not fruit. But, good suggestion for variety!

  • Fortunately....most of us don't know that smell....geeez.... you need to move to a place where there isn't any rotting flesh so you can enjoy Kalbi.

  • ummmm why dont we learn how to make Korean bbq from KOREANS?

  • must everything be taught by the people of the land the knowledge originated from? I don't think so.

  • @jannonymous

this is a good recipe anyway why would you care idiot.

  • The music on this video is nice. If you don't mind telling me, what is the name of the theme?

  • The music credits are at the end of the video.

  • well done good video my only thing is that for those of us who use metric for our cooking we would use the weight so you said 2 tbs and then you gave ml but i think to say it in grams would make more since like 30grams or whatever. I want ribs so bad now lol

  • The is very Epic!!victory!!

  • wow...i always wondered how they made the beef so juicey and sweet. thanks =D

  • LOVE your hair.

  • except that it's red.

    UGLY!

  • The ending of music~ :-]

  • You can also use kiwii, I have been using kiwii for alot of years now and it gives the exact sweet tenderness as using a korean pear.

  • delicious, a recipe made for heaven!!

    i love kalbi!!!

  • Nope. That's usually a guy thing in Korea.

  • How do you make it to taste it like the ones at Korean Kalbi restaurants?

  • Marinate it really good and throw in a little msg? Or you can ask them for their recipe and mimic it? : )

Here's a secret: most restaurants would probably not use pear puree because they're expensive so try it with either corn syrup or apple juice.

  • lean BEEF ribs roflmao

  • You can trim it, ya know! : )

  • Thanks for the great vid! Can you post a chicken bokum recipe? Canna find it anywhere?

  • u didnt blend the marinade so it can be a sauce

  • Well, you could put the marinade in a separate pot and boil it for a couple of minutes and serve it on the side as a dipping sauce.

  • is there any type of sub. for the rice wine?

  • white wine, sprite, 7up are all options in lieu of rice wine

  • Where's the cinnamon?

  • I've lived in Korea and have eaten many plates of kalbi as well as surfed the net and Korean cookbooks for kalbi recipes. I have NEVER seen a recipe for Korean kalbi with cinnamon! Ever. If you have a version, make a video and post it as a response to this video! : )

  • To be honest, I myself haven't seen it anywhere either. I don't even see any online, but I just see my grandmother doing it.

But it's not really cinnamon, it's more of a shikye marinade she makes minus the rice.

I'll make sure to look at how she makes it and give you more info.

  • you disclosed the secret, which should be hidden!!!! hahaha.

  • Well, since Self Magazine and Cooks Illustrated already revealed it, you can't say I disclosed it. I just broadcast it on youtube over the sounds of the TWSSG soundtrack. Hehehe! : )

  • i was kidding. thanks for your introducing kalbi to people of the world. when i was in washington d.c., korean family used to introduce to their home party. the main dish was kalbi. i was surprised that the taste of kalbi was so diverse depending on family tradition.

  • Nice video! But I think you forgot to mention that you have to wash the beef to get rid of bone crusts and blood before you marinate them. You can also use 7up or Sprite to substitute Asian pear.

  • Cool, thanks for the tip.

  • I tried it last night! It was so delicious! Thank you for sharing!

  • It's also called Nashi in Australia

  • why?

  • That looks really really really good, and I just got done eating dinner too. Thanks for sharing.

  • I like the background music for this video. It makes cooking seem so intense!

  • Yeah, it's like these ribs are launching an invasion on my taste buds. Back, back tantalizing tastes!

  • Yeah, Joe Hisiashi rocks!

  • Yea my country's food!

I never knew pear was used in it.

I know soju is used to soften meat.

    BUT I STILL LOVE IT!

I dont know who doesnt! :]

  • Asian pears are expensive! lol

  • Yeah, they are expensive which is why people use substitutes such as kiwi or corn syrup but I think the Asian pear version tastes the best.

  • Ditto. I prefer Asian pears. It's juicier and far more refreshing than western ones. They are nice too but it just doesn't have that juicy sweet tangy punch.

  • grrrrr! Why oh WHY did I find this when I am HUNGRY??? Now i am looking for spices to cook with!!!! dagnabit!!!! j/k! cool vid!! :)

  • nice job! I will try this recipe soon!

  • Could I scrap your video to my blog?

  • 정말 맛있게 보여요.

    You are GREAT!!!

  • 맛있은

  • I thought Koreans don't have beef to eat?

  • Beef is Korean's favorite meat.

  • I like her 'come-hither' expression at 02:05

  • 와.. 잘봤습니다. 정말 먹고싶네요.. 벌써 입안에 군침이 도네..ㅎㅎ

  • Great vid! I didn't know pears are used for kalbi. I don't know how to cook at all, but I guess I'm going to learn a lot from you! Do you run a restaurant in the US? By the way, I was born in Chuncheon near the Soyang river!

  • can i use hanging beef instead?

  • This marinade can be used on any cut of beef.

  • Your good food entices us!

  • Hey I came across your videos randomly. It's great to see vids on Korean cooking!

I learned this neat trick fro my friend years ago- in a pinch, KIWI will help your marinade too. It's not the same as using the good ol' pear but it has a nice sweetness. The acids in the kiwi help tenderize your meat, especially if you only have a an hour or two before you want to chow down.

  • Loved the video, you did a great job. I've never had Korean beef ribs before, they look so yummy. I will have to try this recipe.

  • Ha, ha background music from Tae Wang Sa Sing Gi... Nice taste in music (and kalbi)

  • Loved the video! I like how you did the camera shots/editing for the magazine shots.

My family puts in cup of apple juice with one kiwi to substitute for the asian pear. The kiwi acts as a tenderizer too. Thats my families secrets.

    Looks delicious

  • Hey Tamar, Its funny how I got to know this secret through you.

My Korean mother has never told me about this even she cooks Galbi on regular basis!

    Thanks for another great video.

  • Well, I can understand why. Those pears are expensive, even in Korea. They usually cost at least $4 each. Substitutes such as corn syrup, applesauce, honey, etc are cheaper.

  • oh my god! Wonderful explanation and your galbi looks so delicious! Thank you!

  • Very long has not seen you to renew! Good delicacy! I like

  • Fire-Squaw is making better and better videos :)

  • Hey there Tamar1973...Great job with the video! I'll have to give the marinade a try with some of the more traditional U.S. barbeque I do...looks good!

    Carpe 'Que,

    Jim Rhino

  • Excellent vid. I've never made 갈비--it's just so cheap and delicious here in Bundang. You are right--the secret is the 배 (Asian pear.) Did you know there's a 배 museum in Naju? It's called 나주배박물관 및 배밭 관광체험.

    --분당곰

  • Great video! It was very professionally put together and informative. :D

I made a very haphazard attempt at bulgogi once a few years ago, and have always wanted to come back to Korean beef dishes at some point. Definitely will keep this video in mind whenever I get to it!
