The beauty in a lot of what Arcade Fire does seems to be in the arrangement, rather than the composition of the music itself. However, they can do some really neat and original things that are pretty tricky (from a music theory perspective) and they sometimes make me smile for it, such as the time changes on "modern man" that gives a sort of record skipping sound every now and again. Neat stuff.

I feel like true musical talent is hard to define. I love the Clash, for example, but Joe Strummer can't sing. But he can bark and rasp out some beautiful stuff. I think I'd rather listen to a band like the Clash or the Arcade Fire than a less energetic, frenetic but more technically skilled group. I do agree that they're probably not the greatest pure musicians.

I won't lie, I don't think she's a very talented singer. In fact, I think most of this band is lacking when it comes to true musical talent.

But they're still one of the most fantastic bands on this planet. They play with such passion (best on display when they play Wake Up), and the way that the simple elements of each song make a complex and stirring whole is a feat of some truly remarkable songwriting. Despite their lack of actual talent, they might be the best band on the planet today.

MGMT writes great songs, and have a very "grassroots" approach to their writing/music. It's two guys who lived in the same dorm in college and recorded music for fun. They never dreamed of being as successful as they've become. They're a couple of of normal guys who couldn't care less about the recognition they get. It's a joke to them.

Also, think about this. You have band. Some members play instruments that don't allow them to move around too easily, which makes the presence of those individuals onstage a little-less animated, wouldn't you say? Now, many of the songs they perform don't require all members to play an instrument. For those songs, instead of having members sit-out, they become the spectacle for the audience while contributing back-up vocals etc. Makes it a lot more engaging for everyone involved don't you think?
