Hello, Im a college student who has an interview coming up for an internship..I get really nervous when asked a question about myself..I feel thats harder...When asked "tell me about yourself" what are the key points that I should touch?
I used to get worked up and nervous, this time round I didn't think much about the interview and I got the job. I prepared and thought it's only a job interview. What they are really looking for is confidence as much as the other ticks in the boxes. No matter how good you do in your interview, if you are too nervous it may just lose you the job, confidence goes a long way, the way to do that is by mentally staying positive.
When I get nervous, I ended up in tears and I can't help it. Must be the reason I got rejected in five interviews in the past. Now, I have an interview at ABN-CBN tomorrow and it's a big company and I really want the job. How can I make myself look confident with tears in my eyes. *Sigh* I tried breathing techniques- didn't work. I looked like having an asthma attack.
@annaqtjoey02 - the breathing techniques are for BEFORE the interview (not during) to help you calm down and relax. However, if you are having severe anxiety over the interview itself, you need to step back and take more time to practice for the interview by doing mock interviewing. It is only through practice and familiarity that you will overcome your interview anxiety.
@annaqtjoey02 - good question. I interviewed a young lady that was similarly nervous - I saw her hears, but I knew it was just nerves so I didn't worry about it. There's lots of young ladies in the same situation. I read a scientific study that said Men can't cry as easily because of chemical reasons. They still feel nerves, pain or whatever but its very difficult for them to cry. I think that's true, I get nervous like hell, but I can't cry even though I feel the need too. Does that make sense?
Hi Brain! Thanks for your very good tips. My problem is that in situation like these I become self-conscious about my voice which is a bit too high-pitched for a man.
Secondly, I fear that looking in the eye of the interviewee may appear arrogant to him.
@Rizwanbinriaz Hey Riz I just wanna let u know that I have the exact same problems. When I read this I thought, wow, I guess I'm not the only one with those 2 problems!
Thanks Brian. I have an interview for police officer monday, even though I have been studying your videos im a little nervous. I will ask for business cards. Great Idea. Im so excited that I have this opportunity, I hope they will see my passion. Thank You! Im actually looking foward to it. Im anxious to get back to the streets. Thanks
Thanks for the great tips, but after my interviews i always think of important things I could of or wanted to say but forgot, "dam should of said that". Does that happen to anyone else?
@ibowman64 - yes, it happens to almost everyone. If you asked each interviewer for a business card (or, if they don't have one, their e-mail address), you can make mention of these additional areas in your follow-up thank you e-mail after the interview.
Hay Brain its been a great help to me through your videos. I have an interview today as a graphic designer. I am quit confident by nature but it always happens during an interview i find my self nervous when i get blank or try using good lines.
Hi brian! I got an interview tomorrow in a school where i plan to take my medical course. Been nervous on what they are going to ask me. What should I do in case i get blank on a question?
@kimi17chic - just take your time, keep breathing deep breaths and collect your thoughts. No one (especially medical school) is going to expect you to have a snap answer to a question. I would always prefer that a candidate take their time to fully think about a question before responding.
u really deserve a clap clap! ur videos are very informative brian! continue to help others who are so confused on how to answer questions appropriately.thanks!
hey brian thnx for all ur videos theyr very useful. Just need to ask u one thing, r there any other types of questions asked at interviews besides the ones u hav discussed in ur videos? thnx
I am a fresh graduate nurse. I don't have my license yet as a nurse so i applied online for call center jobs.Luckily 4 call center companies have called me for interviews nextweek! I will be having diz separate interviews 4 consecutive days starting on Monday. tell me if I did d right thing or not saying YES to all interviews..i'm a nurse & yet i applied for call center jobs. I was just looking for job experience & i dont intend to stay long in a call center. How can i fix diz problem i created?
I guess it depends on what is the problem? If "don't intend to stay long" means a year or more, that's fine, go ahead with the interviews. If less than a year, you need to be up front with the companies. If you only have 3-6 months, they may be willing to take you on as a temp, but perhaps not (since the job does require training). A better route would be to look for jobs through a temp agency.
Wow, i can't thank you enough Mr.Brian..thank you so much..i'm willing to stay atleast 1-2 years in a company before going back to hospital jobs... whew! with your clips in here..they really going to be useful in my upcoming interviews. thanks!
I have an interview tomorrow and I am terrible in interviews. I tend to almost hyperventilate when in interviews. I have been doing interviews for years and nothing has ever worked. I prepare and I practise, but when I get in there, I completely blank and start spitting out whatever comes to mind. I haven't heard of the rowboat tip so I will try it out.
Breath.. Everytime you feel like running out of air during interview, pause and breath. Be prepared... Know your employer and what they want. List interview questions that interviewer might be asking and prepare your answers. If you know your prepared, you'll feel confident.
do not try to become perfect in anything you do, the problem is when you go to an interview you expect to become too perfect. know you have a level. go to screw the interview don't go there expecting to get the job. your standard will speak for you and your standard will give you the job. this technique will make you successful at any place. good luck!
I think preparation is the key. I have always been nervous before interviews, and I mean always.
Tomorrow I have an interview - am I nervous? No.
I prepared answers to about 30 questions in advance. I know how to twist them to adapt to different situations. I have read them over about 20 times by now and had a friend asked me them. This is only an HR interview. I really hope it will work, so that my work is not wasted...
I gave a telephonic interview for a job....I have over 2 years of experience...I thought I was confident before I took the call...but when I was answering the questions, I kept on stuttering...I was very very nervous....sometimes, I get so nervous that, I speak too quickly, and my heart beat increases,...and I miss coupla words in a sentence....its crazy !!! I lost coupla jobs cus of my stupid nervousness !!!!
thanks Mr Brian Kreuger i watched all your videos and visited your website.
Thanks for all the help.
Some people in the comments are saying that they feel nervous. I also felt this horrible thing but I consulted a psychiatrist and I feel confident in social sessions and interviews now.
The nervousness problem should not be ignored and dealt with seriously as soon as possible.
i have a problem where i get nervious for absolutly NO reason at all! and it really makes me feel like i have a medical condition or something. I mean i get nervious just by reading in front of the class or doing a simple monolouge..... it really sucks.
dont worry, its not a medical condition. I had the exact same thing, just practice practice practice. Read in front of mirrors, and read aloud to your dog or something. It works.
@jobozolo it's called "social anxiety". trust me, i have it as well. but, thankfully, there are medications you can take to lower your anxiety. they really help! :)
I have grad interviews and I know im most qualified for the seat but also most questionable as an applicant since i recently left a program. I have done mock interviews but i cant anticipate some of the questions they throw out. My mind begins to race and heart beats fast, then i just say some incoherent answer to the best of my paniced quarter-minded ability. Any tips?
Continue to practice. You will never know all of the answers (nor should you), but you will gain confidence with each mock interviewing session. Remember that every poorly answered mock interviewing question is one that is left in the mock interview room, not with the potential employer. Practice will not make perfect (interviewing is subjective and there is no "perfect state" to reach), but it will make you better. Keep practicing and continue to build your confidence.
I have an interview in 2 days and i'm really nervous! i'm terrible at interviews, my voice starts to quiver, my palms get sweaty and my hands shake...any advice for me??
Great video, I used it on my last interview. Great tips and great explanations.
However, I didn't get the job because I think I have a social anxiety disorder. I cant look the interviewer, or anyone in the eye for more than 5 or so seconds. It just feels weird looking at someone for that long. With girls I want to meet, thats the only time where I feel "right". Just staring them down while talking to them. But I dont know if its just me not accepting myself or what. Reply if you want. Thanks
It is something you can overcome, at least to a limited degree, with practice. Let's face it--interviewing is a rather unnatural activity and unlike any other type of human interaction (I guess the bar interview maybe comes the closest?). So don't feel badly that it's difficult and doesn't come naturally. It doesn't for others, either. But do a mock interview, rather than practicing in real interviews.
Okay, I'll do that. I have a video recorder at home, and I'll give it a shot. Thanks man, I really appreciate your videos. They help me out especially and alot of other people too in a big way. Thanks again
I can't thank you enough, Mr. Krueger. I watched almost all these great, short interview videos you have on YouTube and I had so many things going against me leading up the interview (my grandfather's funeral was just 2 days prior, only got one hour sleep the night before, and this was my very first real interview), but somehow I aced it and got the job with the State after my first interview, and you deserve a lot of that credit!
