Im glad to see that this stuff actually gets recycled. I use cotton bags for shopping but still get a lot of plastic film just from toilet paper and vegetable bags and it's nice to know that it gets recycled when I have taken it back to the stores and put it in their receptacle. I do believe a ban is necessary because only a small amount of plastic actually gets recycled and the oceans are filling up with the stuff on a scale unimaginable just search for plastic gyre and you'll see what I mean.
If you watch the "How its made plastic bag". It took "I think" triple the effort to recycle them. One factory make millions a day easily, but how much can we recycle in a day?
@heyimryguy I don't like plastic bags anyway. i'd prefer paper. But even so plastic is used in a lot of the packaging. paper is also more expensive to produce.
@tehatemachine True and true, and it kills me how much of it is used in packaging and when you look at it, it makes a plastic bag ban seem trivial. Hopefully it gets people thinking in the right direction though.
@heyimryguy I don't agree though with the plastic bag ban in certain areas. It's really more profitable for a company if you did what costco does. Don't use any bags at all but offer boxes in which you can carry more. I don't believe that it is the government's job to decide what's best for the businesses or people but rather it being peoples responsibility to decide what's best for them based upon their experiences. I like to keep things simple by using boxes.occasionally i use bags
I have recently started putting up videos here and there on how I re-use things around my apartment. Things such as milk and water jugs are now being used as tea jugs around here. I wash them out, then mix the tea materials, putting them in the fridge, or refilling them with water for myself and others that live here. Various other things are reused here to. Mostly poetry and art occupies my page also. You should cerainly check it out!
@kingacobra1 LOL you are a true wastelander now! make sure you use your pip boy. Go into your inventory. Strip and break down parts to make weapons and blow up mutants :D
Let's get things straight and clarify the controversy.
The problem with plastic bags is not whether they can be recycled, but that they aren't recycled at all, for the most part.
I have travelled across desolate deserts, beaches and cities where it seems that plastic bags are the most prominent component of trash scattered and blown across the land. Let's face it, there is a huge percentage of the population that does not recycle or even care to make an effort. Banning plastic bags is a start.
As sevenjenny said, yes, the solution is not using plastic. Plastic can only be recycled once, and it doesn't even biodegrade, it just forms into small flecks of plastic which kill fish and turtles.
I can appreciate the "contains recycled materials" line... But, isn't the real solution to never use single-use bags when shopping? Is it really that difficult to bring in your reusable bags?
We get a lot of Plastic bags from Wal-Mart. I just pack as much I can into one bag and take it to the area where they pick them up. It's good to get rid of them and to recycle them as much as I can. Even my work place is doing this as well. There are lots of different colors bags, but I pack them in anyway.

also @sevenjeny3...you have to think that someone invented that plastic bag for a certain reason to make it easier on US consumers (people like you and me)...
No, the solution starts with NOT using plastic. Look at what a wasteful, toxic process that is. I'm glad that recycling is happening, but to teach people that all is well as long as they recycle their plastic, is false. Sounds like the type of information that recycling companies are putting out. Yes, please recycle what plastic you can't escape using. But plastic shopping bags? Completely unnecessary.

@iq180 About .5-3% of plastic bags used in California get recycled.

I can see how these bags are a real problem so why did they take away our paper bags at the grocery stores? I prefer the paper anyway.
goldenpassages 3 months ago
why can't they mix these bags with the materials they use to pave our highways?
goldenpassages 3 months ago
should we not use plastic bags for our trash bags? They will end up in a land fill.

Yes we should all use reusuable bags but until the time when the majority uses it we will need to recycle as much plastic bags as possible now.

@wtfgravy because of the color that results once you mix more and more colors...
