i was there and im also in the british army and i found the joke funny it is makeing light of a real problem i think people just get offended by anything now and at this rate when i go to see him nex time it will be an hour and half silence so no one gets offended !!

Aside from that: the joke only works because it shocks, and it shocks because these soldiers are in a dire situation. Only if you recognize that, you can truly appreciate the humour of it, so people who tell or like this joke are perfectly healthy.
