I'd be very interested to hear his sloppy side, because I must have missed it from the hundreds of videos of him playing solos, improvising and shredding as consistent as a machine even when he's alternate picking 16th note triplet runs at ~120bpm (~12 notes per second).

I also stated I was willing to give him and his band a deeper listening, because I was very limited to my exposure, to their material. So I dont doubt what you say. Anyway - I don't think he's serious at all about this video, but I don't hear any problems with his muting either. The point of muting the strings with both hands is to not have undesired release noise and to separate notes from each other. I don't hear him making any undesired noises or sounding two notes at a time, where did he mess up exactly?

@whatshendrix Over the entire lick I hear that notes not being seperated cleanly. To be fair I watched a live solo of his, and I hear the same thing. To my ear, its simply not what I consider clean execution. Perhaps Im just OCD over these things, but ive played for several decades and spend alot of time, on double hand muting, and it stands out to me when someone is not keeping a clean tight control. Live I could even hear open strings getting hit by accident.

And to me, its because his tapping hand, isnt muting properly..as he is using his wrist, while his hand is floating. The palm provides the best muting surface in my opinion. In the live solo I can hear the same lack of cleaness in execution that I expect from someone featured in Guitar world..

Now I see what you mean. You're right about how it sounds. I've heard him do this plenty of times, but not always. He also does the same thing when he's doing bends, I think it's just him going for a harscher sound, it's very typical of hard rock guitarists. I doubt that it's a bad habbit or a technical issue, because, despite acting like a clown, he has gone through very serious and methodical guitar training and as I've said, he doesn't always articulate his licks like that.

As in he isnt resting the palm on the fret board, like 90% of the best tappers in the world do. Im not sure how you cant see it. To properly palm mute, you have to use both hands. The fret hand mutes everything below the fretted notes, while the tapping hand mutes everything above the fret hand.I refer to it as 'double muting'.

@FretNinja The best tappers in the world create an Anchor point and many place the thumb on teh top side of the fret board and/or hook the bottom of the board with the pinky and ring finger. The palm than rests lightly on the strings. Personaly I only use my palm as the anchor point, due to my personal technique. I always keep my pick between my index and thumb, as Im a speed picker and dont want to fux with doing things with my pick. So I cant use my thumb to anchor.

@FretNinja Than while I hold the pick with index and thumb I tap with my middle, ring and pinky, so I cant anchor with those digits. I created my style of palm anchoring, to facilitate and blend smoothly my speed picking with my 3 finger tapping style. Ive noticed Bumblefoot uses a similiar technique. But if one isnt using some point to anchor, your hand is floating. If Its not resting nor anchoring, thus, its not muting.

That is a very simple entry level penatonic tapping lick demonstrated, and he isnt keeping the 'string dampening' effect, that we create using both our fretting hand, and our picking/tapping hand. Its simply not a clean execution. Perhaps he is doing it purposfully to be funny
