It sounds like Bert runs out of the room and goes to a closet full of fragile things. And he throws things out of it. Some things break and some don't. At certain points during this, I have an idea what hit the ground:
Wow I have never seen this skit. It has to be from the 1980's because I was born in 1973 and I watched Sesame Street throughout the mid and late 1970's. It doesn't seem familiar to me. Thanks for sharing it. This is funny. I love it when Bert snaps at the end. What a hoot!
It had to happen; Bert snaps. Why do I think of Grover losing it and wrecking the kitchen at Charlie's restaurant when I see this? Only Ernie would worry about balloons being unable to speak Chinese and suggest that they get them with a helicopter.
Ha, I love The End where Bert gone insane then gone berserk or balistic and go destroy the living room and ending up suicide. Man, Frank Oz is hilarious!!!
I definitely remember this one from childhood. I never thought it about it at the time, but it is rather controversial -- not only because of Bert's violent behavior, but because the practice of letting balloons go is discouraged nowadays for environmental reasons (some animals apparently catch them and choke on them.)
It sounds like Bert is breaking some things that are fragile. The most skits we see Bert with that he loves are paper clips and bottlecaps, and I wonder if he's destroying them on this skit. I know he loves oatmeal too, so I also wonder if he's also breaking his container of oatmeal too.
I think the end of this skit mirrors that of the skit when Grover loses his temper and wrecks the kitchen at Charlie's restaurant. I assume Bert is breaking whatever he can find, to relieve his rage.
I remember this... but vaguely. Strangely enough, I remember the night-time set of Sesame Street (which we rarely saw) and the line "Have a Nice Trip". Poor Bert.
I thought it was because the subject matter was rather sophisticated for a kids' show and because Bert goes crazy at the end. Like I said before-I feared for Bert's safety because I heard a crash at the end as if Bert had hurt himself.
I know what you mean there. I think one of the best things about the Ernie and Bert sketches was that they showed two extremes- the child's imagination and sense of wonder in Ernie, and the more adult sense of reason and possibly frustration in Bert.
You knew it was going to happen to Bert someday. :)
Incidentally, when I was in elementary school, we did the "balloon launch" thing too. The whole school let balloons go and we put our names and the school's address on them, and if anyone found them and wrote back, they'd end up on the bulletin board in the main hallway.
"I wonder if they end up in China, and they can't speak Chinese."XD
Wow Bert freaking ou at the end is kinda scary as well as hillarious. You wonder if he's going to be okay because you hear something crash in the background.
WOW, I never saw that. This one is probably never going to air on Sesame again since Sesame Workshop is more sensitive to the viewers now a days and aiming their target audiance to a younger age.
By the way, just curious if this skit is banned. Since you said it's odvious why no one remembers it.
There's some bits that I think are banned like the first Don Music skit and "I want a monster to be my friend"
this is my first time watching this and the part between 3:16 and the end was FUNN-NEEE! looks like bert has gone-plumb crazy!

I almost had an asthma attack from laughing so hard. I love how Ernie is so sentimental about the balloons, while at the end, Bert goes on a rampage!

Oh my God - I thought I would never see this skit again - they stopped playing it. I love this one - it's so funny!

It sounds like Bert runs out of the room and goes to a closet full of fragile things. And he throws things out of it. Some things break and some don't. At certain points during this, I have an idea what hit the ground:
4:00-a glass plate(it broke)
4:12-a large medal spoon(it didn't break, but it made a loud sound)
4:14-a large ashtray
Agree? If not, any different ideas?

Funny skit. must have only aired once. Can't imagine it did well with parents.
GentleGiant289 3 years ago 2
I think this skit is the funniest when you've seen lots of other E&B skits, so you understand Bert's frustration.

What is Bert doing after he runs out the room?

Sure gets darn philosophical.
What episode did this come from? It looks like the 80s, at any rate.

Does Bert get any sleep at all with Ernie always talking to him at night?
culpit 3 years ago 4
I wonder, is it because
a) the subject matter is too heavy for today's sugar-coated babies
b) Bert goes crazy at the end
or c) I'm just plain not old enough

Or, sicne the old street set is scene, SW wouldn't show this due to the look of the street being different.
