Hey crrhogger, ever run a steam locomotive on slippery rails or with a heavy train on a grade? Maybe you're god's gift to railroading in a diesel but a steam locomotive is a whole different story.
Take note to the waether also! wet rail aint the easiest thing to run on. makes it even harder to to adjust yoour thrttle when double heading cuz you dont want to shut her up to much to where you go the folowing engine pushing the lead engine.
Be nice to the crews! The WP&YR is a serious mountain railroad, and it looks like the rails could have been pretty slick from rain seen on the camera lens of this video. I can't say how heavy of a train the 2 engines were pulling, but the tonnage and weather very well could have been the reason there is so much slipping. Also, the crews may not have a lot of experience double heading the two engines.
My stepfather used to run 69 when she was located at stuhr Mueseum in grand island NE, I have many fond memories of riding on her and i can say she looks very good.
You know; I like to hear a little bit of driver slip just to let me know the locomotive is doing what it's suppose to do. But here, is somebody showing off for the rail buffs, or is hoghead just lazy (lol)? C'mon; get control of that wild slip.
I rode behind 73 July 1 this year and it was magnificent. Not a cloud in the sky.

Just my 2 cents.

the 70 class mikados are some of the most powerful narrow gauge steamers around.....hard to control that wheel slip!

@nicholasbreeden up there yeah but the DRGW 2-8-2s are more powerful.

@crrhogger Running a single steam engine up the Coastal Mountains is hard enough, add a second and it's gonna be pretty difficult.
