This is so mindlessly mesmerising! lol. I remember back in the day, this made it onto news channels, and practically everyone was talking about it. I would leave this up in the background on my computer while surfing the "world wide web" (as it was known in dinosaur times, lol). I think it drove my family nuts, because after a while, you tune it out and forget it's on (they didn't). Thank you for posting this video! There were others spawned from it, but this is the only one that remains.
@SataiDelenn well, some others are still there. This one morphed into what the site is today. They have a tiny section of what resembles this, but it's just not the same.
@FriendlyPedoNeighbor You can get the original whistle stop song, chop it and speed it up if you want to try get get more quality out of it. Not sure that's what you are looking for, but just blabbing.
Ahh the Meme that started it all lmfao when i was in kindergarten our gym teacher made us run laps and this song played me and my friends started dancing circles around the feild she was pisssedd haha
@MysterioBerlin Yeah, it's a crappy recording. Didn't have a decent cam or PC at the time. There is a link to where the source was from in the underbar if you want to download it.
@richardtda Dude, the original site is from around 1997, way before youtube. This video is newer. I just stuck a camera up to the pc at the time and uploaded it.
@22ROFLMFAO22 Yep, just like the original website. It was just a looped wav file and a bunch of gifs. Back then that was the shit. Now it's nothing much to look at. This is more for nostalgia.
@22ROFLMFAO22 In 1997 we had 133 MHz pentiums (some were still stuck on 66 MHz 486s) with only 16 or 32 meg of RAM, and slow 28 or 33 kbit/sec connections
@electrictroy2010 most didn't have any form of DSL or anything either, so a lot of the bottleneck was the connection even with the slow ass computers we had. I remember one time taking hours to download a gif (well, that might have been some time before this) just to watch about 20 frames of stuff. The same gif now even on the slowest of connections is a flash comparatively. Actually, you can download a really bloated flash in less time.
@electrictroy2010 Yeah I remember growing up in the fruit-rollup age, as Day9 states it. Being born in 1992 I would have been 5 when I saw this. I just love how this song remindes me I was the only one who used a computer I could run laps around it before my dad figured out what windows meant.
Hahaaa!! I remember this!!! My grandma and grandpa showed this to me when i was little and i loved it! I couldn't stop watching it! LOL. Thanks for uploading!! I haven't seen this in like 10 years! =D
@NieneJonasHorses cool, glad you liked it. Check out the underbar for the link to the code... well, haven't checked it in a while, but I think it still works.
@Pelicomics Yep, that's why I put it in the underbar, so people would know where it came from. Some people don't realize that the original hampster dance was simply this, a bunch of gifs and a wav looped. Not so dynamic, but it was interesting enough at the time.
@Pelicomics lol, well, you might want to check out other vids before you sub. I've got a bad sense of humor and don't particularly please a lot of people. You won't insult me if you unsub in the future... well, if I ever get another camera that is.
@pemdas927 Yeah, that's because the new website doesn't have the old version. I tried to get them to post it (after I had a talk with them over the copyright and stuff), but they only have a modified version of it... well, modified so it doesn't really resemble it. There is a link in the underbar for the site I got it from if you check it. I haven't clicked it in a while, so let me know if it's not there anymore. I may have to figure out something.
@oXHeartAttackXo Probably not. It's possible that the same person drew it, but Hamtaro didn't come out until 2000. This is pre2000. I'd research it more thoroughly, but someone designed this pc with the pcmcia card right next to the processor and the heat transference keeps killing my connection.
@KacperSC This is the song from the original website... Have you ever been to the original or to the one that is there now? The original was just a bunch of gifs and a wav looping over and over... That's it. This video represents that.
@Walterengcivil lol, yeah, this wasn't really meant to inspire, the person did it as a dare (or was it a joke, I can't remember the details anymore) originally, and it became an internet meme
@angelswilliam lol, that's how it was originally on the site. The new site is the one that has changed. If you check the link to where the code was, you can see how the original site was. It was just a sound bite and gifs playing over and over.
@blything553 actually, it was originally called that because of the original creator. She called it "hampster" because of her hamster named "Hampton".
@blything553 That's how the new "owners" spell it. They explain it on their web site. They suck, and I'm not saying that because of the spelling of hamster. I'm saying it because of what they did to the original.
Thanks for posting this. I started singing this song in the car today, so my 5 year old wanted to see hamsterdance-but on the original website-there was no sound. I always new the song sounded similar to the Robin Hood theme song-thanks for the info.
@stevenwlkr That's why it's here. The new site lacks a bit. I thought they were going to put the original somewhere on the site, but maybe they had a second though and didn't want to break the look they have now.
I've always found the "Copyright" amusing, considering that the song (Whistlestop) belongs to Disney, and the 4 animated GIFs were "borrowed" from other people's websites with not even an attribution. While I enjoyed the Hampster Dance craze since day one; putting it as the browser homepage on hundreds of company computers, and generally terrorizing friends and family members with it... the whole thing was ruined when it went commercial.
@agvulpine Yeah, I'm not sure I agree with the copyright either, but I'm not willing to do anything about that. If anybody was really going to do something about it, it would have been Disney, but they never stepped in. Well, they are making money off of it, and can't really blame them for doing it. That's what we do apparently.
@jfluter Yeah, especially since it wasn't too long after the internet was just billboards and taking a day to download a simple gif. This page as simple as it was kind of showed people that more could be done then just nice looking text pages.
@justinsmitty308 I think it was called "Whistle Stop", but yeah, this was the first one that everyone stormed. The people at the current site said they would post the original, but I'm still waiting for it.
haha ya i guess theres a little pwnage there! oh well we want people NOT to comment on matters they know nothing about, in regard to our business. We've been VERY gracious (so far) in allowing the amount of use of our track as there is. But the record labels are geting a little tired of the song used as public domain. we'll see how they handle it. Will talk with you soon dude on moving ahead with cranium and us working with the old, on the new site. PWNAGE!!! PWNAGE DUDE!!!!! cheers G@H-fans
@ohjeeztower Ha! lol... Man, that comment just brightened my morning. Yeah, it's really not, but now that you brought that up, I can appreciate this computer a little more even though it's on the slow end and has a bad connection. It's still hundreds of times faster than the first PC I watched that thing on.
FWIW, the song is "Whistlestop" as performed by Roger Miller for the Disney "Robin Hood" animated feature. The song keeps its original lyrics but has been reprocessed digitally to raise the pitch. The "Disney connection" is what put Hampton and the Hampsters off the air for quite a while until licensing issues could be resolved.
@Mewkychan I said something about that in the desc "The original song is "Whistle Stop" by Roger Miller which was adapted by Disney in "Robin Hood" (the cartoon)". I will think about putting that other bit of info in there though... Hmm, plus maybe I should say "adopted" instead of "adapted".
@Mewkychan As we are the creators and producers of the Hampsterdance Song and video that became a global hit , and still is, this is factually incorrect. There was no "Disney connection" that prevented or kept the track off the air. The sample was licensed directly from Millers estate and his publisher Sony. Both endorsed the dance record, and both have recieved publishing royalties since the day it was released. Please confirm your facts with Hampsterfans before you publish something.
@Hampsterfans lol, the original site just went on and on and on... people would play it just to annoy the shit out of people, but some genuinely liked to listen to it. Go figure.
@BeefBoullionaire Actually a lot was possible, because the internet grew from it. Granted speed had to be increased. Standards had to be made so that everyone could see things the same, but just as much was possible... well, in a way. If you tried to load some of the pages we have today, it would take days instead of seconds. I remember taking a few hours out of a day for a stupid gif of a money pissing in his mouth. It was before 97, but we still did stupid things from time to time.
this was the ORIGINAL virul "video". I remember a commercial, that introduced me to Hamsterdance. it showed other little known websites. the thing is, i forgot who made that commerical. it's a big company i know that.
@dantheman931 it's kind of my payback for having to watch it when I was younger... though I still do get some nostalgia out of it. So, a win-win for me.
I liked the seasonal changes they made to the page back then too... Santa hats in December for example. The pure silliness was a great break in an otherwise ho-hum or stressful day. Thanks for the memories.
this is a true classic internet page.. one of the first days of the internet, when my school got internet, instead of doing research, we would go to pages like this and enjoy class time.. haha, good times. you have to try MUCH harder to get attention on the internet nowadays.

Hampsterfans 1 year ago
@Hampsterfans lol, the original site just went on and on and on... people would play it just to annoy the shit out of people, but some genuinely liked to listen to it. Go figure.

The weird old days of the internet... when very little was possible, but everything was allowed.
BeefBoullionaire 1 year ago
@BeefBoullionaire Actually a lot was possible, because the internet grew from it. Granted speed had to be increased. Standards had to be made so that everyone could see things the same, but just as much was possible... well, in a way. If you tried to load some of the pages we have today, it would take days instead of seconds. I remember taking a few hours out of a day for a stupid gif of a money pissing in his mouth. It was before 97, but we still did stupid things from time to time.

Good God, five minutes of this crap???
dantheman931 1 year ago 4
@dantheman931 it's kind of my payback for having to watch it when I was younger... though I still do get some nostalgia out of it. So, a win-win for me.

I liked the seasonal changes they made to the page back then too... Santa hats in December for example. The pure silliness was a great break in an otherwise ho-hum or stressful day. Thanks for the memories.

this is a true classic internet page.. one of the first days of the internet, when my school got internet, instead of doing research, we would go to pages like this and enjoy class time.. haha, good times. you have to try MUCH harder to get attention on the internet nowadays.
