Later, we were shopping studios again, and I looked at Reciprocal. They had bought a 2" 16 track. Rumor has it they bought it from Michael Lord. But Reciprocal still looked like a garage studio, egg-crate foam and sleeping bags on the walls. We went with Ironwood, about a mile to the north, who had a 24 track 2". And ended up with a thin sound. With a 16 track 2", each track has more space on the tape. Reciprocal recorded some of Seattle's best drum sounds at the time. Live and learn, I guess.

24 track, 2" tape machines were state-of-the art when I first started recording in professional studios. They still are nice. But they are not always the best. The first time my band was searching for studios, I looked at Triangle Studio in Seattle's Ballard area. It only had a 1" 8-track machine. It became Reciprocal, where Mudhoney, Nirvana, and TAD recorded a year later. We opted for Michael Lord, who had a 16-track 2" machine in his basement. We got good sounds there. Triangle didn't imress.
