@funfuc but i do consider him top 10 though n they can switch u know maybe one time he is 7th, n other times he is 2nd but never 1st....never 1st...one of the best* not the best
@funfuc ur going to argue that lol...c'mon man ronnie lott, rod woodsen, troy polamalu, n probably the best safety of all time ed reed...i think the only reason people say is atwater was the best is because he was a hard hitter thats it...he is not even the hardest hitting safety that title goes to Ronnie Lott...no debate...n im not even to get into the others bc they are fare superior then atwater...if atwater was in the game today he wouldn't last
@weegerjones im chief fan just to get that outta there...i thought this hit was awesome lol...very impressive...uuummm dude Best safety ever? There are so many safties better then him...
Christian Akoye was just coming down from hurdling over someone which made him vunerable to a hit like this. The fact that Atwater was man enough to lower his shoulder into his upper body, knocking him on his behind was noble to say the least, but it was also a tad of an illusion. If Akoye would have had his feet under him, physics say that Atwater would have lost that collision.. ;-) Btw..."textbook" when describing this "tackle" is a joke, he lowered his shoulder and never wrapped up.
@DSVetDad He wasn't hurdling anyone moron!!! Watch the video..he was bracing himself if anything for the hit he knew was coming. This in itself...knowing he was bracing for the hit...makes this hit even more impressive. Atwater knocked his ass backward...EVEN WHEN AKOYE KNEW HE WAS GOING TO GET HIT!!! Best Safefty EVER!!!
@MultiJacquan Same reason Chris Carter, Tim Brown, Randy Gradishar, and Andre Reed aren't in...the system is deeply flawed. When journalists get to govern the process, you'll have vastly overrated players like Harry Carson and Lynn Swann getting enshrined before more deserving guys like Gradishar, Carter, Sam Mills, etc. The fact Joe Namath is in the HOF while others look in is a travesty. People say Atwater built a reputation on one hit, Namath built his on one boast and a mink coat.
disgrace!!! atwater is only 9 ????? WTF? - ask the two guys he knocked out right before winning his first championship in super bowl 32 what he should be ranked - i guarantee its higher than 9 - nfl top ten films - always a fucking joke!!!- and okoye was a beast - only problem was - he met up with a LEGEND #27 steve atwater that day at the old original mile high. an even bigger disgrace is that atwater isnt in the hall of fame!!!!!!
I could be wrong, but I do not remember seeing one helmet to helmet hit in this highlight reel". So I do not want to hear another player crying (James Harrison, I am looking at you) about "oh I have to change the way I play". No, you just need to play like a great player.
@tifa1209 I like the name ff7 is great and all, but is this a serious question? Okoye was the "Nigerian Nightmare". One of the greatest pure power backs of all time. Okoye was very similar to Bo Jackson, just a little slower and a little stronger.
@tifa1209 Lol I have an active ffxi account still and have all the main line games. Great series. O.o Christian Okaye gets powned by Steve Atwater's shoulder tackle tp move : -)
I saw that Okoye hit live on monday night football, back in 1990. Atwater was a beast and will always be one of the most feared assasins in NFL history.
1 dislike ?? must be a chiefs, raiders, chargers or seahawks fan & didnt APPRECIATE Steve "The Assassin" Atwater...as a young 7,8,9yr old i remeber quite well him roamin the field in a Hogs uni @ Razorback stadium & War Memorial then when the Broncos drafted him oh my oh my as a 25yrs & countin Broncos fanatic I LUVD watchin EM blow up the opposition for many yrs & i miss the Greatest Safety combo of alltime (IMO) #49 Dennis Smith & #27 Steve Atwater...GO BRONCOS till the day!!
At 1:21 he says something like "He's gonna be laying on his ass this time baby." He read the play straight from the onset and just blew up Okoye. Damn.
lol no. No-one was afraid of Okoye after that hit, he lost his intimidation factor.
BTW, he had 1031 yards, and that's not a big deal. Last season the NFL had 17 running backs hit that mark (half of the league). It's a nice feat but nothing special.
Also, his yards per carry and carries per game were immediately reduced after the Atwater hit.
It's pretty apparent you don't know shit about football.
@gmta28 I agree 100% but when has the Nfl been kind to broncos in general. Only took John Elway to get one in the hall, with the greats they had before like gradishar, little, jackson, jones, fletcher, and so on. But yes he is a solid top 5 and arguably top 2. He has Ray lewis on a platter in his rookie year.
@1992lance I don't think it'd be funny to see a man get his arm broken off, it would just be the result of stepping into the ring with someone like Royce, lol...how about an average Joe like yourself step onto the field with Steve, I'd find it amusing to watch you run around like a chicken with its head cut off trying not to get tackled, opinions on that please?!?!?
@1992lance didn't mean nothing by it, I'd be run around myself, lol...but hopefully he isn't as big a dick as he is on the field...I've met Romo. coming through the Oakland Airport a couple times and he is cool
@153965 hey, if i met and knew steve, how likely you think ill regret wanting to see him getting his arm snapped by royce. i mean, he was kind to take time for a 5q interview a few years ago
@1992lance I am not sure I understand how you connected Steve Atwater with an MMA guy. Do you just not like Atwater or did he say something about fighting MMA? I am kinda confused here.
Atwater was a big, physical intimidator & tempo-setter. He played bigger, got his opponents' attention & attacked the line hard vs the run & blew up ball carriers. He unloaded on receivers in his area & was a strong blitzer. He had awareness & feel for the game, took good angles & was a punishing tackler. He moved well laterally & delivered jarring blows. He had quite good range in two-deep coverage because he always got good breaks on the ball & had good body control & was a crushing hitter
@gravics You realize of course that Christian Okoye did not see him...and when Atwater hit him Okoye was flat footed atwater was still a great taclker but he gets too much credit for that hit
@Tezbaby10124 You're retarded. Watch the video again. Okoye looks RIGHT AT HIM! Christian "I just got hit by a freight train" Okoye even dipped his shoulders to absorb the impact. GTFO! Go hate some where else you dumb ass. Atwater blew Okoye up. Too bad he didn't get the chance to do it to you, too. "Okoye is at fullback" "I don't give a F*#K if he's at wide receiver!!"........"Is Christian still in here?!" Steve Atwater 1....Tezbaby10124 ZERO.
@FalconFixer77Ok im Not hatting i just said he was a great tackler but when somebody is that flat footed you can knock anybody backwards going full speed...ok Falconfucker
@Tezbaby10124 I disagree. There is a reason he was called "The Nigerian NIGHTMARE" He plowed through defenses mercilessly. One of the few ways to effectively stop him was to bulldog him with a minimum of three large men at him simultaneously. A lone tackler going low MIGHT have tripped him up. The idea that a tackler could simply knock him down was unthinkable.
Steve Atwater for the Hall of Fame!!!
