I always use R.O. (reverse osmosis) water to create my saltwater,....even in the beginning. I do let my aquariums cycle for 2 weeks in the beginning before adding fish. There are several reasons bad algae's may occur,,,,. Using R.O. water eliminates high TDS levels which can be one cause of bad algae. High nitrates, phosphates, DOC's and off balance Kh, Mg and Ca can also create bad algae in aquarium even if your using perfect water.
you said using ro water will help. did you use it to cycle your tank and continue using it for water changes? if so, why was there still a problem with the algae?
the best and easiest way to get rid of hairy algae is to take out your rocks put them in a bucket of tank water and scrub them with a rough brush and put them back , problem solved
I mainly rely on 2 tds meters (HM Digital HM DM-1 In-Line Dual TDS Monitor) installed on my water system they read the tds in 4 stages in my water system,.... the last being the most important. Any hand held tds meter that reads in increments of 1 is good, You can find a good one for around $30, Hanna seems to be a reliable brand.
A sea hare will also do the trick. Over night my sea hare had eaten 50% of my hair algae and other problem algae. But becareful He could spray INK in your tank if he gets angry and you have to do some major water changes.
you can also run a refugium with macro algae which will reduce your phosphates naturally and having a deepsand bed can naturally bring you nitrates down giving your system a much needed natural way of getting rid of unwanted nutrients.
Good video.
