You did a good job there my friend. It's a great novelty, and I'm gonna make me one for my tool-chest! Problem is, a wooden lock isn't very thief-proof; about as much use as a chocolate teapot, shall we ay? But it's a nice exercise. Also I can now say that something useless, is about as much good as a wooden lock! Just joshin'. I like it and I really am going to make one.! Thanks.
I went to my local library today for Tim detwiler's book. I photo copied the project I wanted and whipped one out in a couple hours! Thanks for the idea! Gonna make a great Christmas gift!
To everyone asking for free plans, Scrollsaw Workshop has some : watch?v=MEW__gYuXn4
Anyone looking to build a lock definatly purchase one of Tim's books. I have both of them, they have plans for 10 working locks over the course of 2 books.
Adrian, I will be building my first lock soon. Tim recommends Ash for the spring, but it looks as if you used the same timber as the main body, what type was it?
@guerd87 : I live in Australia and the timbers available here are limited compared to the USA. However I used walnut for the spring. But I have used all sorts of hard-ish wood for the spring in various locks and they all work fine.
@phunkyphantom619 Why dont you go to your local library and borrow the book. Or better yet, go and buy the book online? Why dont you think of your own plans? Ohh its too hard? - exactly! Thats why people need to be paid for their ideas and for publishing good content, because its worth it.
@masterofcats12 : For something that requires exactness like this, you either have to draw one in CAD or buy plans for the lock. Good on you for trying though.
Great video, and to everyone begging for plans...if you cant figure out how to build it from the video, you wont be able to build it accurate even if you have plans. this is the sorta thing that needs time and cant just be thrown together in a few minutes.
@therealandycook : You are right. It takes me about 4 hrs to build a lock. If you buy the book of plans, and then have a working knowledge of CAD, you can shrink the large plans down to this size.

Well you can get past the best of metal padlocks with a pair of bolt-croppers! So for a bit of fun, why not make a wooden lock?

Very cool. Now, for an extra bit of challenge: lock the key in the chest and pick the lock with a toothpick :D
