Its unfair to say that Phil Collins ruined Genesis. For one, in order to BE genesis, it meant that the band was writing the songs together. They all did things solo at the same time, so when you hear Genesis, you are hearing the product of Phil Collins AND Mike Rutherford AND Tony Banks (as of 1978). And two, a musicians style cannot stay the same forever. They evolve, and their influences and interests change. If an artist churns out the exact same thing forever, they stagnate and wither.
Way Back when..... When the words were printed on "albums". Because they mattered and the songs could really stir your emotions. So how did we go from this to Gaga and Bieber is the music buying public so shallow these days?
And about the Collins/Gabriel argument... the old Genesis albums were great, but Phil Collins is a better singer. Why? Because he doesn't go off-tune! My ears love it when singers stay in tune. And hate it when they don't. In some of the old songs, such as Foxtrot's Time Table for instance, Gabriel is drifting so much off tune that it becomes painful to hear.
A wonderful effort during one of Phil's most trying periods. The pathos in his vocals betray the heartbreak of his personal ordeal. One of Genesis' BEST efforts - past present - period. five stars.
To be honest, I think Peter would have done this song justice. Listen to Family Snapshot. I think the missing ingredient though ( not like this song lacks anything) but Steve Hackett's Volume swells and maybe a touch of Nylon string would have sent this song into the stratosphere.
i love this song, but i wish the original was here. the nick davis remix really takes out the dynamic and pumps up the volume, it sounds really stiff compared to the original.
@MobyGoCollection True. The snare drum is much more predominant in the original version. This version sounds like it would have been remixed for easier listening on the FM wave... Still, it remains one of the many intense moments found on the Duke album: a vaporous, misty atmosphere that really ties in well with the lyrics. A little gem to discover again after 30 years after its release. Like old wine, appreciated after some aging...
As a Christian who struggles and strives to live according to GOD's Word and Truth but surrounded in a secular world of hardened and bleeding hearts, I can definitely relate to the lyrics, mood, and feel of this song
This song and "Please don't ask" helped me through a nightmare from which I thought I would never wake up................
The trees and I are shaken by the same wind but whereas The trees will lose their withered leaves, I just can't seem to let them loose. And they can't refresh me those hot winds of the south. Oh I feel like an alien, a stranger in an alien place.
Thirty-one year later I now hear so much "old" Genesis in newer Genesis. This song, which I dismissed as a lazy attempt at reliving Afterglow, could have been from the Gabriel era.
The remasters feature slightly different mixes. Hackett even went and actually RE-RECORDED some guitar parts as he was not happy with the original versions. The most apparent difference is the double tracked vocals being reduced to a single track. The original versions are still out there and readily available so no fears there. Genesis are like Shakespear, you can always find new meanings in their work. Thanks for so many years of great music. CHEERS!
I can't understand why this SUPERB song remained forgotten by the band itself. You know what they sould've done on that 2007 reunion tour ?They should put an "accoustic set", featuring some never played songs like this one, plus "Please Don't Ask", "Alone Tonight", "Evidence of Autumn", "Many Too Many", "Blood on the Rooftops".... that would bring the house down, for sure.
@MultiDean75 No shit, Sherlock. In fact, the Collins years are BETTER than Gabriel's years. Collins is a much better singer (Gabriel? He just can't sing) and the fabulous albums from Trick of the Tail through Duke, as well as the near-perfect We Can't Dance album, are all 10x better than all of the Gabriel-era albums put together.
@markstacechris Most everything I am uploading from Genesis comes from the comprehensive box sets released in the last few years, so this comes from those remasters.
Every iteration of Genesis is mind-blowing. Its like debating if Sabbath gone downhill - its different but equally inspiring.

Phil's vocals stomp Peter Gabriel's into the ground. Not even a contest. More passion, more dynamic, more clarity, more power...
I like Peter Gabriel. I love some of his solo stuff. He has a very unique and distinctive vocal style. But as the voice of Genesis, Phil is the man.
