@Emmetl43 Actually, that's a very common misconception. It's only pronounced Gay-lick by English-speakers. In the native language, it is pronounced Gah-lick. Therefore, I am pronouncing it as it is in the language. It would be like saying Hangul is the incorrect way to say Korean, when it is actually what they call it in their native tongue.
I speak Irish fluently....its gay-lick! in our 'native tongue' its called gaeilge.....just cuz you took a summer course in the language dosent mean you can correct me on how to pronounce words in gah-lick......
@Emmetl43 Ahhh, well that explains it then! Irish and Scottish Gaelic have different pronounciations; that's where the discrepancy falls. I'm not familiar with the Irish pronounciation though, so I didn't realize that Irish speakers pronounced it Gay-lick; I apologize for any miscommunication.
@Emmetl43 Scottish Gaelic IS pronounced GAH-lick. English speakers do, as Elelwyn says, pronounce it GAY-lick, whether speaking of the Scottish or the Irish. As for the Irish pronunciation, we'll have to take your word for it.
ELELWYN: Please post another where you speak louder. I'm trying to find a vid of a Scottish Gaelic speaker who just speaks. THANKS!
Sound! Just sick of yanks learning about a language on wiki and then doing a crash course in it for a month and then make a video thinking their great! :P The Irish and other gaelic languages are dying and they need proper promotion! Thats what annoyed me! But go on elelwyn, do your thing! Gettin people interested! :)
im sry for critisizing but i could be wrong here but i think u supposed to pronounce gaelic like ur saying the irish sport other wise perfect video loving it keep goin
@gulp72 Not a problem; actually, there are subtle differences between Irish and Scottish Gaelic. I learned Scottish, so my pronounciation could be a little different than what you're used to if you're more familiar with the Irish version. Also, I haven't taken those lessons in years! Regardless though, thank you for the comment, and I'm glad that you enjoyed the video regardless. :)
@XxSCRuBxGOmLxX As a request? I may be able to do that. I'm not sure how up to it my vocal chops are ... but if I get the chance, I'll try to make a video like that.
Viewer 6,009 and so thankful to yourself and laurenwhispers for flexing the multi-lingual talents. I'm far too scared to attempt that as, well, I'm a guy and I've found that the female voice is far superior...
Cheers and here is to Sleep: that she shall no longer be a tease for you and others have cured my insomnia! Xo
@tripnixon Well that's wonderful news! Certainly, whispering and softly-spoken voices are a preference thing when it comes to male or female, as are accents. I'm glad that we've been able to help out. :)
Suas leis a'Ghaidhlig! I am so impressed with this video...I am (sadly) the first generation of my family not to be a native speaker...so I had to learn Gaelic at University...it's a beautiful language, easy on the ear and powerfully descriptive in its own environment.
@Dude0096 Nae, although I sort of will soon. My fiancé is a staunch scot and so any children of mine will be half scottish. I'm glad that I could help out with spreading a bit of love for Gaelic, though. :)
@Dude0096 Would you believe that that's where my fiancé's family is from too? Must've been a huge exodus from Glasgow at some point to the Americas. He'd love to go visit his family over there too. Thanks so much for the story! :)
@thebeatlesfan96 Actually, it's Scottish Gaelic. I took an online course available worldwide, although I believe it's run out of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia.
@thebeatlesfan96 Ohhh, ok; that makes sense. My accent would be terrible, as a non-native speaker, but the fact that it's Scottish versus Irish Gaelic would also mess with the ear a tad. :)
An bhfuil tú ag labhairt gaeilge gaelic nó Gaeilge na hAlban? Tá sé deacair a rá. Tá do guth álainn, ach is dóigh liom nach bhfuil cúpla focal a bhfuil pronounced i gceart.
@KEITHANDERSONFILM Ooooh my. I confess I'd have to re-take my year of lessons to figure that one out. I recognize "Alba" as the root word once or twice, so I'm guessing you might be talking about Scotland at some point. I also see the word "pronounced." So ... as my response ... yes, I speak Scottish Gaelic, although I did not learn it in Scotland. I took a correspondance course based out of Cape Breton, Canada.
@Elelwyn Aha! I was asking whether you were speaking Irish Gaelic or Scottish. I'm Irish and there are obviously a few different pronounciations. It's wonderful that you took the time to learn Gaelic! It is a beautiful language, though I think Irish is less 'harsh'. (Perhaps I'm biassed ) :)
@KEITHANDERSONFILM Phew! Good guessing on my part. :P Yes, it is a beautiful language. I'll have to re-learn it someday and maybe do a singing video. Both forms of Gaelic are most beautiful when sung. :)
@KEITHANDERSONFILM Haha, I love the "pronounced" thrown in there!! they're forever doing that on the likes of Paiséan Faisiún..."Na geansaí agus na jeans agus na high-heels"
Chomh mhaith le sin, ceapaim go bhfuil sí ag iarraidh ag caint as gaeilge, gaeilge as Éireann, ach níl mé ró-cinnte!! Nach bhfuil sin an-droch cé go bhfuil muid nach bhfuil in ann idirdhealú idir an dá theanga?? Táim ag glacadh go bhfuil tusa as Éireann...?
@NolanDublin Tá mé ó Bhaile Átha Cliath mar sin ná go leor deiseanna a fháil ar an teanga a labhairt. Mo theaghlach Labhair gaeilge i gcónaí, ach aon cheann de mo chairde a dhéanamh. : (
@bignuts4555 The softly-spoken videos are more of a fad passing through the whispering community, to be totally honest. I decided to do one because they seemed to relax people. Hopefully that answers your question!
@SomeoneWitSkill Hahaha, that would be hysterical. I don't think I could do much closer to opposite of my vocal range unless I attempted something by Bodom or Immortal or something. :P
@WhisperCrystal Wow, thank you so much! You're soft-spoken voices are so very relaxing that I thought I'd try my own. I'm really glad to have had the chance to help you relax too. :)
@kolpomorto Oof, I think Russian would just about do me in. Sadly I don't know any Russian-speakers where I live in Canada! You could certainly put the request out to WhisperFlower, though; I know she does Russian videos. :)
@Aussiegirl265 Haha, that's interesting. I would have never made the comparison between the two languages before, but I suppose there is that guttural or throaty sound that connects them. Of course, native speakers have a much better flow than I do too, so that could affect the sound! :P
Correction, when you are talking Gaelic, your whispering voice is better, but when you are speaking English, your soft spoken voice is better. :) I think you should stick to those 'settings' - as it were - !!
@SpuggyLad Yes, I agree; it's been years since I've spoken Gaelic regularly, so I'm super shaky. I'll have to get practicing before I attempt that again! :P
to be honest I think I would have to say that your softly spoken videos are better than your whisper videos, some people have dodgy voices but good whispering voices, and whilst you have a decent whisper voice your soft spoken voice is amazing :)
You say Gaelic the way we in Boston say garlic :P
