The song is a plea for deliverance & nothing whatsoever to do with suicide. The key to this is the line, “I have seen YOUR eyes & I can see death’s disguise hanging on ME!” which makes no sense at all, until you realise he’s LOOKING IN THE MIRROR. According to Alan Yentob’s UK channel 4 documentary, Cat Stevens had the mirror in his hospital room covered up when close to death with tuberculosis because he was literally “Too shocking to see”. Whoever made the video didn’t understand the song.

In 1968 cat stevens caught tuberculosis and was treated for this for about a year. The song is nothing to do with suicide or depression or moving on but a desperate plea to be spared from a killer disease. '(Trouble' being a euphemism for TB). Much of the Mona Bone Jakon album and subsequent albums were written during this convalensence according to his biography. Nonetheless it is a brilliant song because the sentiments are fear and despair that was very real at that time.

@Catlovertea4 I didn't feel like this video was pro-suicide. But suicide is a reality. Anyone who lives long enough knows someone who has committed suicide. The video is just illustrating something that is very real.

@nutmeg42 Ya, I agree, and to the extent that during hard times, I would listen to it often as it was an analogous comfort. I think it should help reveal to those who feel they are alone in their pain, that they are truly not alone. Some, however, would use this song to support the feelings expressed in this video, unfortunately.

most difficult to watch..if one has ever had a suicide in the family.  If a person ever knew the long lasting effect on the surviors--the intense grief, pain and suffering that stays with the family they would at least try and think through it.. Well, I've checked out Elliot's version (I didn't know that he is no longer with us) Some of his songs sound fine to me but it was so good to hear Cat's version after listening to Elliot's twice. No feeling at all (I guess there were reasons for that)

Well, I only heard Cat's version a couple of months ago & then did a version of my own by request, so this is an unbiased opinion.
