it's not like she Can't sing... it sounds so authentic & true to the character.. With some training, it's possible no dubbing wouldve been required :)
I love the fact that Audrey hasn't got the best of singing voices. In musical theatre, you're an actor first, singer second. She makes me feel a whole lot more confident in myself when I get up to sing infront of my class, because I know that I'm not the greatest of singers but I still love to get up and do it :) I'd like to do this song for my college assignment, but I cant find the sheet music :( Audrey is great! Much love :) <3
Perhaps she acknowledged that her singing wasn't the best so didn't mind if they dubbed it. For the sake of the film. I'm not knocking Hepburn, I absolutely love her.

Truthfully, I think I prefer Audrey's voice here. It suits the harsh tone that is Eliza's voice. I'm sure she has a lovely voice when she's not pulling the cockney accent, but it is a bit harsher than Marni Nixon's; which fits the character, at this point in the movie, more

@ACWProductions101 When you say that the end proves it, you are actually proving their decision to dub her was the correct one. In the DVD commentary of the remastered My Fair Lady, they say that this is the original take that was later replaced with Marni Nixon singing the whole thing so as to produce a soundtrack where the voice was less dissimilar, but they also say that Marni Nixon sang the very last part (from 3:52 on in this clip). So it seems you are a secret Marni Nixon fan. :)
This would have been much better :( She Still sounds like Eliza so there was no point in changing her voice. Plus its Audrey Hepburn!!!!!!! She is a Legend!!! R.I.P <3
I might be jaded but I don't like Audrey's voice as much here. It is probably because I have heard Nixon's so many times that this doesn't sound right to me.
Guys, do not waste your time replying to @RichardElden. He will not stop spewing vicious comments and bursting everyone's bubble. Just ignore him and let's hope he'll leave others at peace!
I agree with most people"s comments about miss Hepburn her voice was good enough to sang the songs in the movie, she was really talented singing within the character that was really great, thanks for upload this video with her voice, love it.
@RichardElden you wish then you might get laid, oh wait she wasnt as cheap as to degrade herself like that, because all her work with unicef does not go to show how great of a person she was even when she was sick she still helped others
@RichardElden what a hateful thing to say, perhaps you say it to spite a wonderful woman who had seen more than her fair share or hardships and had more talent when it came to acting and singing then you could shake a hat at, so leave your jealousy aside nobody wants to hear it so bugger off
@RichardElden her chain smoking was due to miscarriages and other health problems and a failing marriage, still her voice is not strong as a vocalist even before the smoking, dont get me wrong i love audrey hepburn her voice has charm but there was no way she would have been a Broadway legend like Julie Andrews or Idina Menzel or Kristin Chenoweth
I just listened to this version, then the other, then both at the same time over each other, and I Personally (so don't be hatin') like this version better.
@RichardElden Thats a load of rubbish it was talent which she had more of in her little finger than you'll ever have if you are as horrible and judgemental as that!
@RichardElden Yeah that's why she was so famous how can anyone call Audrey Hepburn talentless?!! If you dislike her so much why are you watching this video?
They really didn't need to dub Audrey's voice at all in the movie. The only problem was that she was a mezzo-soprano (which is still soprano, but slightly lower) and they wrote all the songs in a high soprano key. If they had just lowered the key, it would've been fine for Audrey's perfectly beautiful voice.
THIS SONG IS DEFINITELY RIGHT FOR BRITISH AIRWAYS!!!
I EVEN DEDICATE THIS LOVELY SONG TO BRITISH AIRWAYS AND OTHER AIRLINERS THAT CARRY THE "SPEEDBIRD" CALLSIGN AND OTHER AIRLINERS THAT HAVE CARRIED THE "SPEEDBIRD" CALLSIGN TO FORM "BRITISH AIRWAYS"!
@glitterqueen6 No it's not. Julie was flatly denied this role, in any capacity, because Jack Warner thought she wasn't famous enough. So, he cast Hepburn as Eliza, and, when the producers thought she wasn't a good enough singer, Nixon was cast as Eliza's singing voice. Julie had no involvement with this movie (she was working on Mary Poppins roughly around the same time).
... This brings back memories of being ten and my first audition into DIWC this was the first song I realy learned to sing looking back I wish I could have done better for this song but the auditioners loved it so I GOT IN and I've tried out ever seens and have made it each time... well life changes people get better and grow and so I did now i'm in many a musical seens then next one I'm going to be in is Chitty Chitty Bang Bang wish me luck everyone.
@RichardElden For a period of time she would have been able to sing, the effects wouldn't have been instantaneous. Smoking is bad especially if you're a contralto because you sing on the thicker edges of your vocal chords.
@RichardElden No, she had a horrible TEACHER. Anyone with any amount of knowledge on the human voice can hear that Audrey Hepburn had a contralto voice that was being forced into the soprano range during the filming of this. Studios probably wanted her to be a "pretty little ingenue" even thought the character is, in my opinion, more world weary and deserving of a contralto voice in general. Since she can't sing that high, it sounds like crap.
@Sshelly34213 Though I agree that Audrey's singing vocie was not suited to the role, I have to admit that she version brings such a warmth to the song, that Marni Nixon;s lacked.
@stellaluna92 Exactly, contraltos usually have very warm voices, actually a contralto would have been the proper voice for a role like the world weary Eliza. Mezzo Sopranos are typically naive ingenues, I've never seen the character of Eliza as such.
I think I see why, Audrey Hepburn's voice was off-key. But I'm afraid i have to agree with those who thought Audrey or Julie was better. Julie's Cockney accent was a combination of both a proper lady and a common flower girl, everything Eliza is.
@westsidestory97 Sorry u r wrong.u r quite taken with her this is clouding your vision of her..She makes me cringe in my fair lady, breakfast at tiffanys{please watch the ending, cringe} and many more.Like many hollywood movie stars they were not great actors..Did julie andrews not get an oscar when audrey had no nomination..Its public knowledge her acting was limited..The beatles were not great singers but great musicians. But she was a great clothes horse.
@malt8291 Being nominated is an honor enough. And at the time, she was one of a handful of people who had won a Tony, Oscar, and Grammy. If that's not talent, I dont know what is.
p.s. - i watched Breakfast At Tiffnay's last night for the billionth time. It was wonderful.
@malt8291 You shouldn't judge Audrey based on the two movies you have seen her in since she's been in a little over 20 and is ranked 3rd in the female legends catagory on AFI's 100 years 100 stars list. She won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe , a Tony , a Grammy, and an Emmy Award. She also won the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work for UNICEF. So is it really common knowledge that she was a "limited actress"? I think your just a little sore that people love her so much.
I think she is fabulous. Warner was never going to hire Julie Andrews. The alternative was Liz Taylor; Hepburn thought she had the right to do it as much as Taylor.
@mcatch23 Julie was made 4 the role, audrey should have gave it up after learning she would be dubbed..very strange starring in a musical and someone singing 4 u.At least julie got an oscar 4 poppins and audrey got no acclaim,,something jack warner always said was his stupid mistake.
@malt8291 Audrey recorded all the songs; she only found out about the dubbing towards the end of the production. At the time many actresses were dubbed in musicals, like Deborah Kerr and Natalie Wood. Jack Warner was thrilled with the movie because it made a lot of money, which in the end is what the studio wants most.
JuanMc You poor pitiful creature. Acting inhuman just to be as shocking as possible. I know it's best to ignore you and from now on I will. But you should be removed from all these sites. I'll do my best to see that you are.
Psychiatric help strongly advised. Really. I'm sure you'll write something grotesque in return. You seem to enjoy that.
Get off here and get help, so everyone else can enjoy fun and/or reasonably intelligent commenting.
To all those people bitching about how she cant sing as well as some of the other people who have done this song: You try and sing in an accent that isn't your native one. It wouldn't be as good either. I think shes adorable, even if shes not the best. She doesn't make your ears bleed, so there.
@Shitsville101 exactly, ur right and people should stop bitching about her .... and later on in the movie when she uses her own accent her voice becomes beautiful like in the song that goes "i could have danced all night"
@Sshelly34213 I fully agree, it would have been cool if they used Audrey's for the first half but then marni's for the second, to better emphasis Eliza's transition. Though still, I prefer the spirit of audrey's voice on the whole.
@sweeney60 Exactly. Her voice is meatier than Marni's. I do love Marni's version of Without You, but Audrey's voice just works better for this song. It also makes more sense to have a contralto sing these songs. Eliza is not a gentle, naive ingenue, she's a world weary, tough young girl.
@sweeney60 Ouch. Poor girl wasn't even rated, she was never given credit for her work. I like her voice, but it's not like her voice was so great that she should have dubbed the actresses she did.
@sweeney60 In terms of singing I'm sure she'll be ok, but in terms of acting? Good lord, we're talking about the great Audrey Hepburn here, she cannot be matched.
It just wouldn't feel like My Fair Lady, with anyone other than Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn, to me.
@Sshelly34213 Well putting Julie Andrews aside you are probably right. Though I saw part of a production with Jeremy Irons as Henry Higgins, and it was something to see.
@sweeney60 Well who saw Julie Andrews? A lot of people mention her, but I wasn't even alive when she performed the role. I think she's much more iconic for her performance in the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins.
Jeremy Irons is amazing, but if we're talking about actors like Kiera Knightly, it's definitely not going to live up to the original film.
@sweeney60 but can anyone honestly say that these are more iconic than Hepburn in the actual film? Maybe for people who lived in the 50s it was, but I actually didn't even know Andrews played the role until I saw something on tv about the movie that mentioned it.
@DisneyClassicsFan I love Audrey, but her voice was no way suited for this show. Audrey sounded very pretty when she sang "Moon River," but this show was too vocally difficult for her. The only one who could handle it was Julie Andrews. Even Marni Nixon sounded very weak when she dubbed the vocals for Audrey.
not being rude how the hell did audrey beat julie andrews....julie should of got the role but then she wouldnt of been able to do marry poppins.....marnie nixon dubb this though...she sounds like julie...
I think Audrey Hepburn did such an amazing job with this role. Her vocals might not be as strong as Julie Andrews' or Marni Nixon's. But she brought such innocence to Eliza's character, who then evolved into this marvelous, strong woman. Not that she wasn't strong to begin with ("I'm a good girl, I am!" :D) but Audrey was just incredible in how she portrayed this loveable character. From that innocent flower girl with her "Aaaooooow!" to the incredible fair lady :)
@JuanMacready Well, aren’t we the pessimistic one? I’m well aware that Hepburn was 35 at the time she played 20 year old Eliza. And I /still/ prefer her version (frankly she looked fantastic at that age!) And I say this as a person who has enjoyed the works of both Andrews and Hepburn. She was very believable :D
@carslan82 Dude, he's a troll. Spam his comments and pretend he doesn't exist afterward.
He has three other accounts on youtube, trolling every video related to these actors and this film. He trolls here ever single day and will start fights with random people. He will continually bother you until you are driven insane. I think he has OCD personally, look at his profile, he faved his videos twice. He constantly repeats himself. His attitude about the death of the actors is quite frankly creepy
@Sshelly34213 Meh, in all honesty, I didn't even give his comment a second thought after my reply. He probably is a troll for all I know, but I haven't had any further interaction with him since then. And if he gets off on making comments on deceased actors, that's his prerogative and sad existence, not mine. I'll continue enjoying the movie :)
@carslan82 He's a troll, his comments are all over videos related to this film and even the actors. He also has several other accounts on here, all of him trolling.
It is quite sad, which is why I just spam and ignore them. But just wanted to let you know so you didn't get into a lengthy argument with the guy.
@Sshelly34213 That's cool, I appreciate it :) No need to worry, though. If he attempted getting into an argument with me, I have a secret weapon I can use. It's called 'logic'. Shhhhhh, don't tell anyone :P
@Amtrak1194 Oh I absolutely agree. Audrey's cockney accent was to die for :). And based on the clips I've seen on YT of Julie Andrews' version of the cockney accent, Hepburn's version is perfection by far. In my opinion anyway. I just adored her accent, and loved her speech in general. I was referring more to her singing with my prior comment. Admittedly, it isn't her strongest point. Not that she can't sing, by all means she can. But admittedly not at the same level as Andrews or Nixon.
oh i love Audrey´s voice.... it´s a shame they didn´t kept it in all the songs.... It´s pretty obvious the professional voice they kept has techniquec, but ´cmon! Audrey is just lovely!
Lyrics: "All I want is a room somewhere Far away from the cold night air With one enormous chair Oh, wouldn't it be loverly? Lots of chocolate for me to eat Lots of coal, making it lots of heat Warm face, warm face, warm feet Oh, wouldn't it be loverly? Oh, so loverly sitting abso-bloomin-lutely still I would never budge till spring Crept over me window sill Someone's head resting on my knee Warm and tender as he can be Who takes good care of me Oh, wouldn't it be loverly ... (cont'd)
Then, the crowd sings from the beginning, with Eliza singing the "Oh wouldn't it be loverly" line and the second verse and the bridge starting with "Lots of chocolate for me to eat ..." The crowd then sings the third verse starting with "Someone's head resting on my knee, warm and tender as he can be" and Eliza sings the line "Who takes good care of me" and then "Wouldn't it be loverly", then the crowd and Eliza do a call and answer on "loverly".
Sorry, I have an error in the lyrics. In the second verse, starting with "Lots of chocolate for me to eat Lots of coal, making lots of heat." The next line is "Warm face, warm hands, warm feet." I repeated "warm face" twice, which is incorrect, sorry.
To sing it with a cockney accent, don't pronounce the "r" on any word that ends in an "r" (for example, "chair" is "cha-uh" and "somewhere" is "some-wha-uh"). Pronounce "th" as a "v" (for example, "with" is "wiv"). Drop "h" on the beginning of any word (for example, "head" becomes "ed"). Pronounce any word with the "ay" sound as a "y" sound (for example, "takes" becomes "tykes").
And finally, barely pronounce the "t" in any word that ends in a "t" or "d" (for example, "want" is almost just "wan" and "eat" is almost "ee" with a barely audible faint "t" on the end and "cold" is almost "coal" with a barely audible faint "d" on the end). "Room" is pronounced with an "ooh" sound in the middle ("rooohm", not the American way which sounds more like "ruhm"). And "coal" is pronounced "cah-owl" but run together quickly into one syllable, not two, to almost sound like "cowl".
A couple more: "my" is pronounced "moy", "cold" is pronounced "cowl" with a faint "d" on the end, "night" is pronounced "noy" with a faint "t" on the end, and the "ll" in "still" is barely audible, so it's almost "stih".
Jack Warner didn't want to use Julie Andrews because she was unknown. He was going to put a star there in the role no matter what and it was either Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor.
her voice isnt as good as marni nixons or julie andrews, but certainly not bad to llisten to. the way she sing seems more "Eliza-like". they did't need to dub her, but some of the songs are out of her hands. it's not like she did a bad performance, this film is one of my favorite musicals. i only really took an interest cos of Audrey.
She was great in "Funny Face." They just needed to have someone do the top notes. She worked hard on all the songs but didn't put it into her contract that they had to use her voice.
As for Julie Andrews not getting the part she originated on Broadway...Mary Martin was the original Maria in "The Sound of Music." Andrews "stole" that part, but that is how Hollywood works..
@mcatch23 Julie Andrews didn't steal the role of Maria in "The Sound of Music" from Mary Martin. Mary Martin would been way too old to play Maria. She was too old for the role when she did it on Broadway.
Audrey is amazing, they should have for sure used her voice in the movie instead of some other women. Audrey's voice actually works for the character, its so much fresher and better than the other voice. Bad choice on the director's part. Audrey is a gem!

@RichardElden what a hateful thing to say, perhaps you say it to spite a wonderful woman who had seen more than her fair share or hardships and had more talent when it came to acting and singing then you could shake a hat at, so leave your jealousy aside nobody wants to hear it so bugger off

@RichardElden her chain smoking was due to miscarriages and other health problems and a failing marriage, still her voice is not strong as a vocalist even before the smoking, dont get me wrong i love audrey hepburn her voice has charm but there was no way she would have been a Broadway legend like Julie Andrews or Idina Menzel or Kristin Chenoweth

dezparado5 10 months ago
@RichardElden Brittney Spears and Janet Jackson have "fucking awful" voices, moron. Sure, Marni Nixon
could technically outsing Hepburn, but it's so painfully obvious that it's not Audrey singing. Furthermore,
Hepburn did her own sining in 1957's "Funny Face", including "How Long Has This Been Goin On." What's
good enough for Gershwin and Astaire is good enough for Lerner and Lowe and Rex Harrison!

i have nothing against marni nixon but they should have used Audrey's voice! she sings beautifully!
Niizazuu 11 months ago
They really didn't need to dub Audrey's voice at all in the movie. The only problem was that she was a mezzo-soprano (which is still soprano, but slightly lower) and they wrote all the songs in a high soprano key. If they had just lowered the key, it would've been fine for Audrey's perfectly beautiful voice.

FamGuyFreak100 1 year ago
@RichardElden For a period of time she would have been able to sing, the effects wouldn't have been instantaneous. Smoking is bad especially if you're a contralto because you sing on the thicker edges of your vocal chords.
Sshelly34213 1 year ago
@RichardElden No, she had a horrible TEACHER. Anyone with any amount of knowledge on the human voice can hear that Audrey Hepburn had a contralto voice that was being forced into the soprano range during the filming of this. Studios probably wanted her to be a "pretty little ingenue" even thought the character is, in my opinion, more world weary and deserving of a contralto voice in general. Since she can't sing that high, it sounds like crap.
Sshelly34213 1 year ago
@Sshelly34213 Though I agree that Audrey's singing vocie was not suited to the role, I have to admit that she version brings such a warmth to the song, that Marni Nixon;s lacked.
stellaluna92 1 year ago
@stellaluna92 Exactly, contraltos usually have very warm voices, actually a contralto would have been the proper voice for a role like the world weary Eliza. Mezzo Sopranos are typically naive ingenues, I've never seen the character of Eliza as such.
Sshelly34213 1 year ago
I think I see why, Audrey Hepburn's voice was off-key. But I'm afraid i have to agree with those who thought Audrey or Julie was better. Julie's Cockney accent was a combination of both a proper lady and a common flower girl, everything Eliza is.
puterboy1 1 year ago
@puterboy1 I guess I disagree with that because "white trash" are really caricatures and I think hepburn gets that down pat.
Eliza was not originally a proper lady, she started out as an outrageous white trash caricature like the rest of her class were.

@mcatch23 Julie was made 4 the role, audrey should have gave it up after learning she would be dubbed..very strange starring in a musical and someone singing 4 u.At least julie got an oscar 4 poppins and audrey got no acclaim,,something jack warner always said was his stupid mistake.
malt8291 1 year ago
@malt8291 Audrey recorded all the songs; she only found out about the dubbing towards the end of the production. At the time many actresses were dubbed in musicals, like Deborah Kerr and Natalie Wood. Jack Warner was thrilled with the movie because it made a lot of money, which in the end is what the studio wants most.

@Sshelly34213 I fully agree, it would have been cool if they used Audrey's for the first half but then marni's for the second, to better emphasis Eliza's transition. Though still, I prefer the spirit of audrey's voice on the whole.
sweeney60 10 months ago
@sweeney60 Exactly. Her voice is meatier than Marni's. I do love Marni's version of Without You, but Audrey's voice just works better for this song. It also makes more sense to have a contralto sing these songs. Eliza is not a gentle, naive ingenue, she's a world weary, tough young girl.
Sshelly34213 10 months ago
@Sshelly34213 I personally believe Marni Nixion was highly overrated.
sweeney60 10 months ago
@sweeney60 Ouch. Poor girl wasn't even rated, she was never given credit for her work. I like her voice, but it's not like her voice was so great that she should have dubbed the actresses she did.

@Sshelly34213 How do you think Kiera Knightly will do in the new movie version. I've heard her sing and she has some nice pipes.
sweeney60 10 months ago
@sweeney60 In terms of singing I'm sure she'll be ok, but in terms of acting? Good lord, we're talking about the great Audrey Hepburn here, she cannot be matched.
It just wouldn't feel like My Fair Lady, with anyone other than Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn, to me.
Sshelly34213 10 months ago
@Sshelly34213 Well putting Julie Andrews aside you are probably right. Though I saw part of a production with Jeremy Irons as Henry Higgins, and it was something to see.
sweeney60 10 months ago
@sweeney60 Well who saw Julie Andrews? A lot of people mention her, but I wasn't even alive when she performed the role. I think she's much more iconic for her performance in the Sound of Music and Mary Poppins.
Jeremy Irons is amazing, but if we're talking about actors like Kiera Knightly, it's definitely not going to live up to the original film.
Sshelly34213 10 months ago
@Sshelly34213 There are several tapings from the performance and shows she did promoting it. Not to mention the original cast album
sweeney60 10 months ago
@sweeney60 but can anyone honestly say that these are more iconic than Hepburn in the actual film? Maybe for people who lived in the 50s it was, but I actually didn't even know Andrews played the role until I saw something on tv about the movie that mentioned it.
The original cast album is pretty superb though

I think Audrey Hepburn did such an amazing job with this role. Her vocals might not be as strong as Julie Andrews' or Marni Nixon's. But she brought such innocence to Eliza's character, who then evolved into this marvelous, strong woman. Not that she wasn't strong to begin with ("I'm a good girl, I am!" :D) but Audrey was just incredible in how she portrayed this loveable character. From that innocent flower girl with her "Aaaooooow!" to the incredible fair lady :)

Admittedly, it isn't her strongest point. ... loverly, loverly, loverly, loverly
Then, the crowd sings from the beginning, with Eliza singing the "Oh wouldn't it be loverly" line and the second verse and the bridge starting with "Lots of chocolate for me to eat ..." The crowd then sings the third verse starting with "Someone's head resting on my knee, warm and tender as he can be" and Eliza sings the line "Who takes good care of me" and then "Wouldn't it be loverly", then the crowd and Eliza do a call and answer on "loverly".
sachathecat 1 year ago
Sorry, I have an error in the lyrics. In the second verse, starting with "Lots of chocolate for me to eat Lots of coal, making lots of heat." The next line is "Warm face, warm hands, warm feet." I repeated "warm face" twice, which is incorrect, sorry.
sachathecat 1 year ago
To sing it with a cockney accent, don't pronounce the "r" on any word that ends in an "r" (for example, "chair" is "cha-uh" and "somewhere" is "some-wha-uh"). Pronounce "th" as a "v" (for example, "with" is "wiv"). Drop "h" on the beginning of any word (for example, "head" becomes "ed"). Pronounce any word with the "ay" sound as a "y" sound (for example, "takes" becomes "tykes").
sachathecat 1 year ago
And finally, barely pronounce the "t" in any word that ends in a "t" or "d" (for example, "want" is almost just "wan" and "eat" is almost "ee" with a barely audible faint "t" on the end and "cold" is almost "coal" with a barely audible faint "d" on the end). "Room" is pronounced with an "ooh" sound in the middle ("rooohm", not the American way which sounds more like "ruhm"). And "coal" is pronounced "cah-owl" but run together quickly into one syllable, not two, to almost sound like "cowl".
sachathecat 1 year ago
A couple more: "my" is pronounced "moy", "cold" is pronounced "cowl" with a faint "d" on the end, "night" is pronounced "noy" with a faint "t" on the end, and the "ll" in "still" is barely audible, so it's almost "stih".
