I have plenty of American friends that have roots to here and Ireland. There is a good chance that this is part of their history as well. I have several coins registered with the Celtic coin Index, a celtic gold in the Colchester museum as part of a recorded hoard. I have recorded 9 Treasures in the last 6 years. That they become property of the country....but then you are given FAIR market value (split) between you and the landowner.

In England, in centuries gone by, people used to "clip" little bits of gold or silver off the edge of the coins, and then pass the coin on. After they had built up their free "booty" they would sell or trade it.

This was a capital offence..if caught, you would have been hung.

The government introduced "milled" edges to high value coins, to deter "clipping".

It was just a slab of brass or steel with coin sized indentations in it for each of the denominations...the 5 dollar gold piece, $10, $20 etc. You placed your gold coin in it....if there was some play or movement back and fourth....that would indicate it had been clipped

Milled refers to the way the coin was made. Prior to the late 1600's coins were hammered ( hand made with a hammer and 2 dies) After that they were made by mechanical means, pressed between 2 dies ( milled ) by hand crank and later by machines.
