The tunnel was first opened in the 80s by the dude that operates the tour. The phone was probably brought down then. Derrrrr

The phone only indicates folks have been down there before and didn't think an old tunnel was any big deal.
If the filmmakers wanted to keep the drama 'DON'T PHOTOGRAPH THE FUCKING PHONE.
