  • 10 people have had an orgasm listening to this song and have accidentally pressed the wrong button

  • This one's so pretty, one forgets it's Simon, rather than Garfunkle, singing.

  • i don't know why i spend my time writing songs i can't believe, with words that tear and strain to rhyme....

  • u know :)

  • Simply one of my all time favorite songs. I'm nearly rendered speechless whenever this song is played. This is pure bliss for me. Thanks so much my friend!!!!

  • thhere but for the grace of you go i........... chills, you just get chills

  • It's 04:40 AM where i live. I really should go to bed. But I have to listen to this song first.

  • Kathy's Song is quite arguably the finest song Paul Simon ever wrote and also arguably one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I love his version of it, but honestly I prefer Shawn Colvin's version.

  • The lyrics in this song are just genius xx holly

  • So beautiful.

  • no eva cassidy shit

  • Beautiful. I first heard this when I was 15.

  • Heard this live tonight by a local singer songwriter. Still sounds so good x

  • greatest love song of all time? it just might be.

  • My name is Spartacus but hey I just love this little song...true nostalgia and yearning

  • @Bruchag No, I'M Spartacus!

  • The live version is even better.

  • @hesmon I find that's true with a lot of S&G songs. How many artists today can you say that about?

  • @ctwomey you are right, not many.

  • so beautiful <3

  • Awesomeness my name is kathy xD

  • I listen thinking of my sister and her hubby as they introduced me to this song long ago.

  • the genius duet. vagif_seidov@mail.ru

  • When I sing this song I replace the words "to England where my heart lies" with 'doing lent where my heart lies' because it just feels good. (Not intended to be religious)

  • its "there BEFORE the grace of u go i." and it means, there i go, before u, doing what i do while u do what u do.

and as i watch the drops of rain, weave their weary paths and die, and i know i am like the rain, there before the grace of u go i

  • When you're in love and your love leaves....

  • Listening to this man sing gives me tunnel vision of the place we all have knowingly or not, the place where we are at home and the place where we remember all the events that make us who we are, good and bad.

  • The song ruined the advert.

  • I've just spent ages trying to pick my favourite Paul Simon song, impossible when the guy is so amazing!!!!!

  • I don't remember the first time I heard this. But Paul's soft and tender voice is like magic. 'Once again I found a sincere song here. I only khow little songs, sang by that kind of tender voice. Innocent, honest,...I love people who are childlike, honest , sincere, humble and who don't pretend to be more than they are

  • It reflects my present strange feeling of being in love with...

  • i want to scream inside

  • John Bradford, an English reformer & martyr, was heard to say "There but for the grace of God goes John Bradford" while imprisoned in the Tower of London when he saw a criminal on his way to execution.

"There but for the grace of God go I" became something you say when something bad that has happened to someone else could have happened to you.

I believe that Simon has taken artistic liberty with this phrasing, wherein the rain is the prisoner and God is his love Kathy.

One guitar - key of G.

  • @thomashilsdon Interesting, one correction though - this guitar is down tuned half a step and means that the song is in the key of F#

  • @yratt It may be true that the guitar is tuned down a bit in the original recording but I am sure that the song is played in G 'formation' and really that is the more important piece of information since the key is contingent on the singers choice of range.

  • @thomashilsdon I feel there is a clearer association between the speaker and the rain - 'I watch the weary drops of rain / Weave their weary paths and die'... 'I know that I am like the rain', ie. I too am following my weary path towards death, but unlike the drops of rain, I don't get there because of my love for you - 'there but for the grace of you go I'

  • @thomashilsdon Which is essentially what you said.. just clearer!

Kathy's existence, her grace, rescues the speaker from the otherwise inevitable decline towards death.

  • there but for the grace of you go i ...

is a succinct way of saying volumes about how ones life is centered about a loved one...

    it is definately one guitar...

listen to classical music (e.g. asturias) which is also one guitar.

  • My mom's name is Kathy. She always makes sure to tell people "Kathy with a K." Anyway it reminds of her, tired from work. Beautiful, but not quite pretty. Calm and strong. I like playing this, it will never fail to make me tear up while thinking about her.

  • there, but for the grace of you go i.

    what does it mean?

  • @kralle7611 It means that he is temporary and insignificant, and his only reason of existence is her (Kathy)

  • @Srkisrle but also his only reason of dying. and its not even special. he's just like the other rain drops "weave their weary paths and die", but she maybe determines his direction to death?

i honestly have been wondering about this lines for years.

  • @kralle7611

Also true. I think the meaning of this line can be more easily felt than explained and understood.

  • This is seriously my favorite song of all time.

  • Does anybody know if there are two guitars playing this song and what the tuning is? Thanks :)

  • @hkaarsenal I would say there are two guitars

  • This is the only one that makes me cry...Every time i hear this song i cry like a child...

  • Dio-come amo questa canzone!

  • who looks up Simon and Garfunkel to click the dislike button?

  • @KealanMcSexy Scary ain't it?

  • Wow.

  • This has to be one of the most beautifully written songs ever. I wish I could write music like this. Amazing.

  • Two great songwriters & lyricists. Just lovely

  • @chrisal64 best on earth to date!never will we see such simple but good music again and that makes me sad.every artist nowadays aah you all now what im trying to say....

  • I swear most all 60s music, like all great music, Is timeless. What a beautiful song

  • I stand alone without beliefs, the only truth I know is you

  • an even more beautiful song now that I know the story behind it, truly, truly wonderful......and sad....and then wonderful again.

  • What a wonderful piece that brings back memories of days gone by spent listening to ever subtle note and word of these two

  • Wow this is great - my daughter Cathy also has her songs up on you tube - check out Cathy Jewson Acoustic....I think you'll like it!!!

  • "All that I would tell is truth. The only truth I know is you."

I'm always wondering if these two sentences imply that "All that I would tell is YOU".

    Do you guys think so?

  • @HKwong0502 The lyric is "...and so you see I have come to doubt...all that I once held as true...I stand alone, without beliefs....the only truth I know is you..".

  • @64adman opps sorry about that I mixed up with other things lol sorry!

  • ...... imagine sitting on a subway platform in NYC in 1966, waiting for a train to the airport so i could go train to go to Vietnam and hearing...HOMEWARD BOUND... for the first time........... damn.....

  • Who on earth would be so crass as to 'dislike' this song? What have we come to?

  • This was Paul's love song for Kathy Chitty, whom he met the Railway Inn Folk Club in Brentwood, England, in 1964. Several of his songs refer to her. English folk music and Bob Dylan were two of his strongest musical inspirations at that time, especially Ian Campbell, the father of the UB40 twins who sang every week at my brother's folk club, and Martin Carthy, who also inspired Bob Dylan.

  • "There but for the grace of you go I" - this song is for you Tusi...

  • a song of great beauty that never loses its magic

  • im doing that now

  • I remember as a teenager, consoling myself in my loneliness with this beautiful song.

  • My name's Kathy, and today is my birthday. I'm 16!! This song is the first thing I listened to this morning. Ok thank you, I had to share.

  • @KathyAndJohn1 happy birthday kathy ;)

  • @KathyAndJohn HAPPY BIRTHDAY from one Kathy to another. Hope you had a great birthday.

  • @KathyAndJohn1 Happy belated birthday, Kathy!

  • @KathyAndJohn1 a bit late Kathy but Happy Birthday and also A Happy New Year and X-mass from Holland,Groningen ;)

  • @KathyAndJohn1 I am happy you prefered listening to a song like this in stead of the noise that is made today. Wish more 16 years old were like you. Happy birthday. Little bit late but okey :]

  • They sound as good today as they did 50 years ago!!!!!!!!!!

  • I want to grow up with their songs. I know that my life will be amazing.

  • Hello from the shelter.

  • it was wigan train station

  • "...the only truth I know is you...

  • Marty...don't hate the young over their poor teachers...

  • WHO writes today that gets anywhere near S&G, Dylan, Cohen, Mclean, Denver ???, thank God for these masters of words & song,,thank you (Basil an Englishman with sweet ears)

  • 7am eating blueberries and listening to this

couldn't possibly be stressed today :)

  • 'The only truth I know is you.'

    ^

One of my favorite lyrics ever, I am seriously considering a tattoo with those words lol.

  • Sitting here waiting for a response to a text message I sent last night to my ex-girlfriend: "The decision to continue to talk to me or not is all yours. To say it simply: I am fine either way. As if this 'it' actually exists." But to be honest, and I can be honest since none of you are her, I lied. I'm not fine either way. For some reason I keep going on Facebook and just look at the little box that says "[ex-girlfriend] is in a relationship with [new boyfriend]"--but why am I writing this?

  • @schach420 b coz luv hurts.

  • @MsMartine2010 And the deep emotional origin of the post is resolved by your words of wisdom.

  • Comment removed

  • Would that I were a musician as well as being a poet! Then i should play songs such as so beneath my beloved's window! Truly, is the day of the troubador gone for good?

  • This song makes me think of my stepdaughter, Katherine. She and her sister Sarah were abducted by their biological mother to England a year and a half ago. Her father and I are desperately trying to find them and miss them terribly.

  • To my friend Carolyn Seaman Alter.....RIP. I will always remember the nights we got to know each other listening to Simon & Garfunkel!.....Love ya, Wendy

  • @codern bare fingers, baby

  • My girl Kathy has left me, or is it I left her. Writing words of marriage, anxious to feel that magic, but without a pass to enter.

  • Its thunderstorming and I decided to put this song on with my windows open. And shed my tears for my broken heart.

  • beautiful

  • paul simon=best song writer of all time!!

  • Simon and Garfunkel are defintly the best song writers of all time...

  • in my masturbation only years simon and garfunkle filled in the needed emotion...for that i will be eternally thankful

  • paul simon is the greatest songwriter of the 20th Century, and one of the most gifted poets on the last few centuries.

  • One of my favorite love songs. Simon and Garfunkel consistently sing with both talent and emotion, both live and in studio, to the point where I actually prefer some of their live versions to the studio ones. "Kathy's Song" and "Leaves That Are Green" are clear examples of their versatile skills.

  • The only truth I know is you.

And as I watch the drops of rain

Weave their weary paths and die

I know that I am like the rain

There but for the grace of you go I.

  • Simon and Garfunkel were alway more than musicians, they were the poets of our day. Poetry exploded after their ilk. I was there, I saw it happen. It was awesome!!!!

  • I don t thimk I ll ever feel a rain without to reamind this song

  • I don't think I'll ever get through this without crying.
