But Zarema breaks free and stabs Maria to death. The Khan, in a fury, almost stabs Zarema, but like Maria, she kneels down and opens her arms, willing to die because the Khan won't love her. The Khan cannot kill her and the guards take her away. He is devastated and builds a fountain in memory of Maria - the fountain of bakhchisarai, or the fountain of tears...
I apologize for the length, but I love the ballet so much! :D
@theglobecruiser The story is about Maria (Ulanova),daughter of a polish nobleman who is taken away by Khan Gisrey, who assailed her family during a ball held for Marias engagement with young nobleman Vaslav. During the fight Vaslav is killed by Khan Gisrey who then, enchanted by her beauty, hijacks Maria and takes her to Bakhchisarai Palace, his home. Zarema, his harem favourite and who is deeply in love with him, awaits them. However, Khan Gisrey ignores her and tries to make Maria love him.
@Juventina1005 Maria rejects him and he leaves, but drops his hat on the floor. Later on, Zarema (Plisetskaya) tries to regain his attention but she fails and collapses desperately. At night, she steals out of the harem and visits Maria. She tries to explain how much she's in love with the Khan and finally tries to stab Maria. She hesitates, because Maria opens her arms willingly. But as she sees the hat on the floor, she freaks out again. In the nick of time, the Khan and some guards arrive.
I know that it is a film and therefore less restrictive than a stage presentation, but it remains one of the most dramatically powerful interpretations of this great scene.
I have to say the saddest part about the cold war is I did not get to see theses great ballerina's dance until now. How happy I am we are all learning to evolve!
@09Jerzy Hei, don't take me wrong, please. I don't say the world is better now, I even think many times it is worse. I m very much sorry the soviets didn't succeed in the comunism, hope the generations later will. we have no capitalism now - it is all corporative nazional-socialist sistem - everywhere.except - i hope ,at some eilands we did not uncover yet.
Amaizing performance. I think Maya didn't have the luck to live in a free society for larger periode of her life. It did not reduce her great tallent and superhuman strenght to face the Stalin soviet regime. I wander what she will be if she lived in a better world. i don't compare her to other stars. How can you say when you look at them at the night sky who is the better one? "Competition kills human creativity"...well, it is not for the ocasion, but i just dropp it here anyway. cheers
@jeenthough Исключительный, неискоренимый идиотизм!!. Ваш западный мир не дал свободу России, а унижение и мерзость тлена и рабства. Правда есть факт помноженый на веру, и жалейте себя и ваше неизбжное падение...
@mikhaildrabkin I think there is misunderstanding here. I understand perfectly your russian bcouse I m slav too. I wanted 2 say better world then then. I don't say we live in a better world now. not at all, I m glad you don't think this either. Keep your Stalin with dignity. I m not throwing shit on him like the western propaganda.yes i live in the west 2 witness this.Russia is not in slavery now bcause of the western world only, but bcause it took it's values 2 follow.Nazdrovje.
This is a very good quality clip of this great ballet scene. To see Ulanova and Plisetskaya together is a real joy. Both are perfection in their own style. Ulanova's dancing is just breathtaking.
I think Ulanova's death scene is phenomenal - beautiful, moving, just wonderful!
Do you think there are any ballerinas today, Russian or not, who have great dramatic skills?
I've also been watching lots of Fonteyn, who has her own brilliant dramatic gifts - different from the Russian style, but quite moving nonetheless. See her Swan Lake (NOT the one with Nureyev), but the one from the 1950s with Somes. I even think her Sleeping Beauty is dramatic - not an easy role to turn into something.
jkircker. I don't think so. You mention Fonteyn, Ulanova and Plisetskaya. All three are in a class of their own. I think that Alonso is there too. It is no coincidence that these ladies are all prima ballerina assolutas, and deservedly so. All four have given so much to the art of dance. I wish someone would come along with this talent. I may be waiting for quite a while.
I couldn't agree more. Note the level of -acting skill- both Ulanova and Plisetskaya showed in this film--in my humble opinion, I don't think there is a modern Russian ballerina that could pull it off like this.
amazing choreography and performance!

This is one of the great moments in dance history: the only film of Plisetskaya and Ulanova dancing together.
When Ulanova exposes her chest so she can be stabbed - what a moment. THen her death..... so moving...
Then Plisetskaya does the same thing. Kill me - I have no reason to live..... Love this ballet! Ach!

brewskyxxx, first Galina throws back her head and opens her arms to Maya: Kill Me. Then Maya performs the same gesture to Pyotr Gusev. Chilling.
