These are interesting engines indeed. Balancing the firing pulses of the Inline 5 has always been an issue ever since the design was conceived. While they are better suited to diesel injection, as the fuel delivery is even, the improvments in petrol injection have made them quite successful for petrol/gas use, however, they still require balance shafts to reduce harmonics!
i think this is a uneque eningine. The ballance should be fine, i was constantly looking at number 3 piston and each one either side the timing and balance looks fine there. no 1 and 4 counter each other, no2 and 5 do the same. 720 / 5 = 144
180-144 = 36 every 144 degrees there is a power stroke. the power stroke always gets overlapped. overlap = 36 degrees.
In volvo's inline-5 engines the firing order is always 1, 2, 4, 5, 3. Can any1 please explain to me how on earth that can be better than 1, 3, 5, 2, 4?
@Onuva42 It gives a smoother rotating crank for starters, but it might "group" the loading, since the load / unload cycles on the bearings can kill crankshafts. Four-cylinder engines are the same with the end-pairs being sequential. But here it's probably just so that the balance-shaft can be made smaller and lighter, a 5 cylinder engine generally has a heavier crank than a four, and so absolutely needs balancing for comfort - whilst a six doesn't.
The crank on this animation isn't quite right. No1 and No5 should be swapped overto give the same layout used by most 5 cyl engines to give a firing order of 1 2 4 5 3. The 5 cyl has been produced by many manufacturers including Mercedes (diesel engines), VW/Audi, Fiat and Volvo. Gardner also produced a large 5 cylinder diesel (the 7 litre 5LW) for marine, stationary and truck applications.
I had a freind who had an ACURA Vigor with an I-5 and he loved that car till his GF totaled it and it the only japanese I-5 I know of, and any one who says I-5's cant make power just look at the numbers that AUDI/Group 44 got out of them, truely an awsome engine.
Almost all volvo engines are Inline 5. 2.4, 2.5 diesel and petrol, in all cars s40 v50 s60 v70 s80 vc90, i have 2.4 turbo diesel, it sounds between V8 and V10, and has incredible torque at 1100 - 1500 rpm
well i know that alot of the newer volvos come with 5 cylinder engines, In the XC90 there is a 5 cyl diesel at 2.5 liters but in the Volvo S series there is a 5 cylinder petrol model
old post i know, but how well would a rotary go, being driven internationally with a tandem trailer on the back? or say pulling a carravan or another car?
if the engine managed it i think u would be stopping every town for fuel and putting oil in it every day or 2.
save the wankel for the race track, thats what they do best
this animation like audi engine

1-2-4-5-3 firing order probably will provide for less harmonics with-in the crank, though most 5 cylinders have forged cranks to begin with!

I love how this must have been discovered, the engineers smoked some weed and...
Engineer 1: Oh i think we should use a straight 6.
Engineer 2: No, it`s too much.
Engineer 1 :what about a straight 4.
Engineer 2: No, it`s too small.
Engineer 1: Than we should make a straight 5.
Engineer 2: Now that sounds like a compromise, i like it.
And then it turned out to be great.
More engineers need some pot sponsored for them, maybe then we will have something to fly us to mars...

There is now a Straight Seven diesel engine made by AGCO
i wonder what a gas version would sound like

This is why I want a Volvo: the #5. Ya Audi and VW make em but they aint the same. The only non Volvo 5cyl I would love is the Audi Quattro yum.

the actual lay out of most 5 cylinders is the cylinder pairing with one cylinder added to the center two set up.

Audi Quattro coupe... that turbo inline-5 on the Quattro coupe sounds like a mini-V10
Volvo and GM still uses this design, don't know what happened to the Audi/VW inline-5
