It was built in a class 100 clean room so dust wasn't a problem. In a normal hard drive, one or two specs of dust would not normally kill a drive. The hard drive shown has a filter on the jar so small quantities of dust are thrown off into filter when the platters spin up. But opening a HDD in your bedroom is not normally recommended!

Connect a vacuum pump to the bell jar, and while the drive is running - pump the air out of it, see what happens :)

i always thought that if you removed the casing off a hard drive it would get a speck of dust on it & kill it.
