do you think its possible if i got some cassete tapes and sent them do you think he could record me some of his good blues records love the collection he has.
i have heard mr bussard will let anyone who is interested come and listen to his records and bs w/ him. is this true? i would seriously consider making the trip back east to meet him. i really think this guy is something, and once hes gone, so are all those fantastic stories and memories. i really enjoy him and his records.
hey joe love the collection.but you shouldnt down grade other peoples music.because u dont like it.lot of good music out there.love the videos though im a collector too but of lps 45s.
I would like to ask Joe Bussard or any other 78 collector here if they have Gennett 3392 Joe Candullo Orchestra.-" For You And Me". I have been searching for that recording for 40 years and I haven't been able to find a copy or do I know any other record collector who has that 78. I am looking for it because Bix Beiderbecke is listed as possibly being on that recording and I would like to hear it.
There is one 78 that will always bother me. I won it in a mail auction 3 decades ago and I paid for it and the guy never sent it to me. Said he "misplaced" it. I have never had another chance to buy it again and it was one 78 I really wanted. It was Paramount 12650 and the guy selling it had it graded "a strong EX+ near mint to most". I am sure Joe Bussard and other 78 collectors will recognize it as a very special record.
I sure did. The Blind Lemon Jefferson birthday special picture label record in near mint condition. That was one record I really wanted but seller shafted me on it.
His records are so good and so rare, if I'd visit him and even if he'd let me play them myself, I wouldn't know where to start! My record collection is so crappy compared to his, that I don't have a single one of his 25k records!
I have about 3500 all 78's but I have friends with at least 15 to 20 thousand in their collection.possibly more. It would have been very easy for me to have 25,000 records if I picked up all that were available. But I'm only interested in what I want to hear. Value means nothing to me. I'd rather have a $10.00 record I love than a $200.00 that would just sit there. However his collection is very impressive and extremely well organized.
some one please tell me this man Joe Bussard is still alive and well. to me I would imagiine he would have some interesting sttories. very rarely do I meet some one with more 78's than me!
Ripped off is a pretty strong word, listen to enough old blues and you see pretty much everybody ripped off everybody else. And it was all good, as long as it was good.
i have a blind lemon jefferson record from approximately 1927 on paramount and i ordered a hokkum boys record on the same lable from ebay ,but the fools who i got it from caused a packing error
yeah, I used to buy 78's from ebay. I had many broken. I used to never buy a 78 from a seller unless they could promise to use the cardboard sadwich method of packing. You wouldn't beleive some of the ways people try to send them
Yhea,Some Ways Are Absurd.A Few People I Bought Records From Just Threw Them In Small Packages Without Protection,And One Person Broke It In Half And Mailed It To Me.I Now Only Buy Records From Reputable Dealers Who Sold Them Before.
I've been reading about records arriving smashed with amazement. I have been had records delivered through the mail for over 30 years and have yet to receive any broken ones.
i always wondered why i liked that canned heat song...joe seem nearly as careless with his records as i am when i am drunk, but my records sound so good when i've had a few too many to care...
joe ain't careless, though he does treat his records with the same love a father gives his 8 year old son: tough love. he ain't afraid to smudge a record with his thumb-print. even so joe's records always sound good.
Those Fonotones were acetate disks, too. Acetate on aluminum cores. One thing that can definitely be said is that you'd be a damn fool to use a shoe brush on a Fonotone record!
It is true, of course, that Joe knew the guys from Canned Heat really well. I seem to remember them wanting to record something on Fonotone years ago, but I think Joe had gotten out of cutting records by then. One of the members of Canned Heat does appear on the John Fahey Shuffle Band 78 though. Think he plays banjo or something on there.
I heard Fahey was asked to join canned heat just before they got big but refused. If its Al Wilson from Canned Heat, he is thought to appear as 'Blind Owl Wilson' on a fahey release - may be voice of the turtle not sure.
Something about the shoe brush on records, too. Shellack isn't like vinyl. It's stiff stuff. I'd have a hard time believing that a shoe brush would seriously damage a 78. Sure, it's a bit coarse, but hey, for someone who's been collecting 50 years, I'd think he'd have certainly noticed by now if he destroyed any records.
Some comments on Joe's handling of records. One of the things about the old 20s and 30s 78s he collects is that they're not going to break as long as they're in your hands. Plus, fingerprints won't stay on the 78s if you don't have anything on your hands (like, it's just sweat or something).
Thanks for this info, It's a song I do myself, in my own style, Have a video of me here doing it my way, but none the less, Im am so glad to learn the story behind this song, thank you, Peace, dsws
joe needs to learn something about caring for and handling records. bob hite of canned heat knew more then joe and owned over 70,000 78s in the early 70s
Sure. When Bob "the Bear" was still wearing diapers (late 40s/early 50s), Joe
was running a radio station and had amassed a huge collection. Interestingly enough, the Bear bought some of his rarest from Joe. In fact, Canned Heat spent over $10,000 on 78s from Joe in the 1960s (after a gig in DC) and added to the best of their collection.
Cnd Ht,, Henry Vestine was involved in issue of Yazoo LPs, so many of the tracks issued were from Joe
So CH got name fromTommy Johnson, and did Henry Thomas number to make hit.
Its still happening with Seasick Steve, I like the guy, and heard him do great slow blues, very Fred McDowell, but I saddens me to think all those amazing black guys never got the fame they deserved, or were invited on to Top Gear etc, why couldnt Dave Edwards, Lockwood get asked.
Im related to him my last name is bussard :)

Joe was a fan of canned Heat and certainly loved "when the boys would come visit on Cherry Hill."
I do have to agree with rorygg1, however, about Joe's handling of the records. I think a shoe brush is a little course for any record....
