Lithium works on the hippocampus in the limbic system of the brain, the part that deals with depression, bi-polar disorder and other illnesses. She's describing (I believe) the push and pull of having to take a drug that simultaneously prevents manic highs (tamps them down which bi-polar suffers dislike) but prevents the debilitating lows. Great song!
