Just to clarify my previous two postings... They were about Rolf Smedvig, whom I knew in my college days. As far as Bud Heresth is concerned, I've never heard anyone better on that instrument. I think he and his Chicago Brass colleagues of the '50's & '60's carved a sound distinguishable from all other orchestras. You can really hear it during the Fritz Reiner years.
I knew him before he became known publicly - so his arrogance was probably not yet known. But one of my distinct recollections of a "better-than-anyone-else" attitude came from the look on his face when he had to stand on line with the rest of us to get his meal. It seemed to be beneath his dignity.. I also used to take my meals with the late John Daverio when he was a B.U. Freshman. Musicianship side, they were a perfect example of total opposites.
Wow, thank you for the insight! I admit that he certainly can play, but something about listening to someone who is a you know has a bad attitude corrupts how you hear the music for me. You know, in my experience you don't seem to really hear of trumpet players that aren't good people that much...and of course Bud can run circles around Smedvig...he could have been his teacher.
I knew Smedvig when we were students at Boston University. He lived with us in the dorm for a year - then moved into his own apartment across the street. I would occasionally drive him to his lesson at Symphony Hall with Guitala. I once got a date with a cute girl at school, only to have her ask me to bring Smedvig along. Needless to say I never went with her. In fact, I married another B.U. girl - and much cuter, too ! :)
Wow, just out of blatent curiosity, was he as arrogant as everyone says? My band director was one of Walter Chestnut's students back when he played for the Springfield symphony, and he (not Prof. Chestnut) presented stories of him being quite the egocentric jerk...
Not only is he a spectacular player, but he seems to be one of the nicest people one could meet, and is generally interested in education and helping others improve. This is not always true with professionals, some (like Smedvig for example) are absolute narcissistic jerks. I especially like Bud's interpretation of the Haydn.
It's amazing to see a living legend as just an ordinary aww-shucks kinds of guy.....

Ah, I'd always heard Smedvig is a class-A dick. It's amazing Jeffrey Curnow got along with him as long as he did :p

Do you have the rest of the video? It would be nice to see as much of Mr. Herseth's wisdom as possible

I think he sounds better on mouthpiece than most trumpet players do with the horn.

Yes, people now-a-days are really stupid, the room should be dead silent when Bud speaks, he is a legend to us all.
