I like the way skins includes music which is new or not well known. It would be so easy and lazy to say "For the party scene we'll use a bit of Lady Gaga or Dissie Rascal, for the love scene we'll use Beyonce, for the sad scence we'll use some Snow patrol." Same goes for the clothes, it would be easy and lazy to say "Freddie's a skater so we'll get all his clothes from Quicksilver" or "JJ loves magic so he'll wear a yellow cape" or "Cook is the trobuled bad kid so he can wear a baseball cap."
I'd say the current generation of skins cast is probably gritter and more real than the previous cast. Series 1 & 2 characters seemed a bit cliched, with the geek, the super popular boy & girl, the gay one, the religous one, the drugie, the dreamer with the eating disorder, the cool black musican, etc.
