No mac version available. It does run under parallels, but is a bit buggy from what mac users have told me. ie no where near as smooth as under Windows.
Is this the same as a normal, square-grid, cellular automaton, just on a very large grid, or is there some sort of fractals going on? It looks cool anyway, but if the first case was true it would be pretty amazing.
does anyone know if visions of chaos is available for mac?

Yes it is based on a square grid CA similar to Rudy Rucker's rug rule.
But in this case there are 3 CAs (layers) running simulataneously that feed into each other so you get the multi-layered appearance.
No fractal related maths involved.
