Dude, we all love Hogan, but stop bashing Moe. That's the second time I've seen you do so. Moe may have been mildly autistic, but he spent countless hours beating hundreds of thousands of golf balls until he go to where he was. Ever seen videos of his clinics? He knew exactly what he was doing, and in his own eccentric way could explain it to other people.
The guy hit the ball dead straight every time his entire life. Nobody else in the history of the game has ever been able to say that.
Great vid. Thanks for posting. I think he owed a lot of his success to his mental attitude and course management. No doubt though - the best ever ball striker.
tiger almost never mis-hits the ball.. the only reason hogan was more accurate was because the courses he played were 6400 yds compared to the 7400 yd courses with 8 inch rough they play on tour today
You don't know what you're talking about. Even Tiger himself has said that he wishes he could "own his swing like Ben Hogan did." Jack Nickalaus was once asked if Tiger Woods was the best ball striker he had ever seen, he replied "No, no, Ben Hogan for sure."
Tiger's swing is not as perfect as people make it out to be. Tiger himself has said that his spine angle needs work and he gets stuck on the downswing sometimes.

This course was Houston Country Club, which at that time measured over 7000 yards. Hogan hit every fairway and every green during this match. Rain soaked the course early too, which made it play even longer.
And trust me, while the rough may be longer these days, course conditions back then were absolutely horrible by today's standards. The fairways were much shaggier, greens were more bumpy, and the rough was just as penal (think about the tiny little grooves on vintage clubs).
okay, i agree with u that hogan was a much purer striker of the ball and was probably better technically than tiger... but we can all agree that tiger is much better mentally, physically and overall a better athlete
Better athlete, sure. Golfer's didn't lift weights back in the day...although is it really necessary? Hogan was 5'7", small frame, and drove the ball 260 on average with antiquated equipment. Imagine him playing with the stuff they let guys use nowadays.
Better mentally, I don't know about that. You don't win 64 tournaments, including 9 majors (6 of which came after the accident which left him crippled for life) without being one tough mental competitor.
Where was I, ooh yeah, he had written to Mr Hogan and requested a signed photograph, as he wantd to present it to a famous Irish Golf writer "Dermot Gilleese" on his 50th birthday. He said he honestly never expected a reply, but he got it. Along with a short letter from the great man himself it read something like he had heard of said gentleman. The guy has the letter in a bank.
I'am a self confessed Hogan nut, cant stop reading about him and his life. Infact, I recently bought Harringtons USPGA victory on DVD in a small Golf store in Bray Co.Wicklow. It's a real curiosity shop, he's got everything from clubs & memrobilia to books and trophies, great. Anyway I got talkin to the owner and he noticed I was reading a Hogan book and I told him i'm a bit of a Hogan nut and he said he was the same, infact he said he still had a letter that he had recieved from Mr Hogan.......
One of the secrets that they never talk about is the fact that Hogan moved his back foot up on the follow through and sometimes as much as six to ten inches. You can see it here in this and other videos of Hogan, especially with his driver, woods ands longer irons.

The lovely one on the right is Dame Edna when she was young. A very ardent admirer of Hogan she was.
