Versus and NBC need to give up. ESPN and ABC need to get their contracts back. Bring the Wings back to national televesion every Saturday afternoon. I miss that ol Wings/Avs rivalry, and the best part? IT WAS ON ABC!
@gophilliesforever If ESPN gets their contract, FOX should have a chance at earning theirs back. Even so, Gary Thorne would miss the NHL on ESPN until the Orioles season is complete, as he is under contract with MASN.
Good luck to the Vancouver Canucks and Boston Bruins tonight. I'm a Pens fan so no dog in the fight but I'll cheer for Vancouver, since they're closer to Utah than Boston!
Please. gimme a break. espn doesnt give a shit about hockey and doesnt respect hockey. versus does and hopefully the nhl will remain on versus. espn blows
@PENS68 That isn't what happened. What happened was in 2005, ESPN was offering the NHL a revenue-share agreement on aired games (ex: if ESPN made $57 million in revenue from NHL Games, the NHL would get $45 million). However, Versus (formerly OLN) offered the NHL $250 million dollars upfront; and since the NHL was in dire need of money, they dropped ESPN like a lead balloon and signed with Versus.
@thedereklee9 ok dickhead, tell why im SOOO stupid. this should be good. dude, either youre some immature little prick, or some 30 year old loser who still lives at home and jerks off every night. ya wanna call names because you dont agree with me? get a life ya loser.
@HFsX, the NHL will sign with Vs even if they offer less money. ESPN simply has too many other properties in the form of the NBA, college football, and college basketball. Maybe they can attain broadcast rights and put it on ABC. They can have a game of the week on Sunday afternoon, since they have nothing to compete with football on Sunday seeing as ESPN doesn't want to show the NBA on ABC (they don't have a game until Christmas).
ABC can also air the Winter Classic (the Rose Bowl is on ESPN), the ASG and games 1 and 4-7 of the Stanley Cup Finals and Conference Finals, with Versus carrying the other games. A championship clinching game, even Game 4, should never be on cable if the NHL is to be considered a legitimate league.
The NHL on ESPN marked the league's best days, as it was able to take advantage of the MLB and NHL lockouts. It's unfortunate it would soon experience a lockout of it's own, the league was expanding so quickly...but was that part of the problem? We may never know. I like NBC, but for it to truly replace ESPN it needs to broadcast more games and earlier in the season. Vs doesn't deserve more than half of the games on one team's schedule. That's effed up.
Unfortunately ESPN has changed a lot since it ditched the NHL. ESPN is basically sports tabloid coverage. They don't care about the passion of competition anymore.

The networks covering the NHL aren't as good as they used to be. Now there's too many ads. Also, ditch NBC and Versus. Bring back ESPN and ABC.
