In a lot of upper-level classes you need to show up. But yeah, generally not those big classes. Some professors don't add anything to the class though. -.-
I had a really bad first semester because a lot of the "friends" I made turned out to be just people that used me like a tampon an then chucked me. any similar experiences?
School, College, University are pretty light compared to an average work day, so get used to working hard. You cant skip work, so dont skip any classes.
I agree your education directly equals your possible work income.
So, I'm only a junior watching all these, and you don't even know how much these are helping me get a perspective on collage, and what I want to do in highschool now to prepare for it. xx
@redwhitelights I wouldn't recommend commuting. I commuted all 4 years of college and didn't make a single friend. I joined clubs and was in choir but I feel like everyone makes their friends in orientation, dorms, and through other people.
So I am going into my freshman year at college this fall and I'm commuting to school since it's not far enough to live there. Pretty much everyone I know is going to live in residence and I feel like since I'm not living there, I'll have an even harder time with social stuff like friends, etc. Do you have any advice??
was it hard to pay attention in class? I've heard of those extremely boring lectures that no one pays attention to.... And did you take notes in all of your classes?
Don't ever buy books from your school store, especially if you're going to a large university. If you professor wrote their own book and it's your only option, obviously get it. If you don't think you'll need the book to help with your other classes or majors (i.e. books for gen. ed classes) go on a site like Chegg.com and just rent the book for the semester, it's so much easier. I only kept 2 books from my classes because they'll help with my major but every other book isn't that useful later.
are there "cliques" in college, or will you kind of just fit in and be accepted? do girls tend to be catty or is that just in sororities? (which I don't wanna join)
The only "cliques" tend to be the sororities. Honestly, there aren't many cliques in college especially among freshmen because everyone is trying to make friends and most people are more open then they usually would be. You'll probably make friends with girls you wouldn't have in high school.
I love how it is completely opposite in Australia. Our most imporant year is year 12 in High School and then your grades in University don't matter at all as long as you pass!
I was a lazy AP student I guess you could say, I'd have all honour/AP classes and would procrastinate terribly and never study, but I would get all As and ranked really high in my class. I'm afraid college classes are gonna be a million times harder tho, so instead of As not trying hard I'll be getting Cs or w/e. e.e Procrastination will be the death of me.
not trying to be bitchy or anything, i just truly don't understand. well, i'm in highschool and i always thought that highschool is the time to really try hard. that decides where you go to college. and i thought in college you could kinda slack off. because i thought that work places just look to see if you have a degree and where it's from. so does it really matter if you get 70s and stuff in college? i just thought as long as you pass it's ok. i don't know...can you explain it to me?
@coolygiuly well, im not completely sure, but i think u are mostly right. As long as you pass and get your degree, you'll be able to find a job, but if you slacked of and didnt actually learn the stuff u should know how to do, you might not get promoted or even get a job. Hard workers are more likely to get more money, right?
You're easy to listen to. Its not like I'm talking to a parent or teacher. THANK YOU FOR BEING SO EASY TO RELATE TO. One more year of high school and I'm off to University or College!
About textbooks, CHEGG.COM. Holy crap, I'm not in college yet, but my sister is. She's a bio/ed dual major, so her books are CRAZY expensive. With chegg, you rent the books, then send them back at the end of your semester, year, whatever. She saved an insane amount of money by doing that. Plus, they plant a tree for every rental or every book, something like that.
So I just finished my junior year and I'm going to need to write my application essay soon, and I have absolutely no idea what to do. Any advice on that?
when you were talking about what high school was like all i was thinking was "clearly you did not go to a private school" or at least not one as strict as mine. it is impossible to skip at my school, like they will call your parents and ask where you are. also our work load is fucking ridiculous. in english, 2 weeks before exams started, she assigned 2 essays. i wanted to kill her. i'm excited for uni but kind of scared too, these videos are helping me :) even though i'm only in grade 12.
Love this! Thank you so much for this series rachel! It really helps me out and I'm sure it's helping others. Plus you're freakin adorable and funny as always :D
I'm only a senior in high school, but I love these videos. It makes me excited for college and it makes me want to go to college so much more. It's going to feel like college > high school!
@sunlovingbeauty It depends on the school and the class. At my school and hers, most classes are 1 hour & 15 min. or 1 hour & 30. As a freshman next year though, my school has me taking one 6-hour-long class. This isn't normal at all, but there can be some long ass classes at some places.
As far as the whole missing class thing, if you're sick or something legit, should you email your professor ahead of time just to let them know, or is that pointless? My school isn't big so they may notice.
Review immediately after your classes or right at the end of your day before you begin whatever the heck you want to do at night. Study a little bit every day. DO NOT STUDY for an exam REVIEW for an exam!!!!!
