Hi, I'm a 14 year old Goalkeeper in England.. I'd like to say i really enjoy your videos and your techniques and will ask the coach to use them at my football club.. techniques like these might help me one day be good enough to play for my faviourite club Birmingham City...thanks mate
@stlouisgoalkeeping I'm actually working really intensive 4 times per weak in my academy I'm 6.2 feet and I'm in the professional age 16 and am a professional keeper... I'm seeking as fast as I can to come in this academy but I need the location in what state of US actually am in europe :)
What if a player is coming up alone (1 v 1) and as he gests closer he shoots in stead of passing or coming even closer.....what are some tips for that?how do i get the ball away from the net?please answer...thanks
hey coach i have a question. when u dive what part of ur body do u land on? like when the ball is in the air and i dive for it, what part of my body should i land on?
you should start by making sure the ball is the very first thing that hits the floor. Even before any part of your body. then your body should hit the floor in this order: forearm, tricep, shoulder, side of your torso, hip, outer thigh, outside of the knee, outer shin and finally the foot. somewhere in my favorite videos, there is a couple of videos from a dutch coach demonstrating the technique very well as well as a german goalkeeper in slow motion. both are quality looks at the technique
he is struggling a bit to find playing time in his team. a combination of a chronic knee injury and a coaching staff that doesn't really know that much about goalkeeping....but regardless of the situation, these are the challenges he must overcome.
Consider Jorge Campos who was 5ft 6 and he was amazing, very quick.
also i can guarantee that some small keepers can get to the upper corners FASTER then taller keeps (if thats what you mean), and in more style. I do think that their chances are lower to become a major league player, but only because people think that smaller goalies aren't good even though they can be!
im 13 and im a keeper but sometimes when someone does a chip and it is too high and im short to punch the ball out...any tips on how to save the ball otherwise?
this is a typical problem at your age that many goalkeepers have to deal with. the one thing I would caution you on is NOT to try and punch the ball away. You should be trying to TIP the ball over the bar. when you make a fist to punch a ball, you actually lose 2-3 inches of height because your fingers are now curled up into a fist. If you keep your fingers extended, then you gain those 2-3 inches and that might be enough to tip the ball over the bar with your fingers.
hello im 12 and from the uk i was wondering if i could come to do the international program but what age do u have to be to join and how long this offerwill last
No, we prefer that the hands are not criss-crossed. It's kind of being picky and a bit perfectionist, but if the hands are criss-crossed, then you only have surface contact on the ball with one hand. If you have your hands side by side, then you have both hands on the surface of the ball and therefore, more control of the ball.
hi odd question I used to be a goalkeeper in the uk was nearly a pro till I got injerd but im a guitar teacher now anyway whos the song buy sounds like Giant also can you do a video about covering your near post on one ons please
songs are by audioslave and we can see if we can film a video on angles. we have a very interesting way of visually teaching angles to our young players and I think it will work on film.
BEL VIDEO MISTER. Come variante per la capovolta, faccia incrociare le gambe al portiere nel rialzarsi. Tornerà in piedi molto più rapidamente. SEMPRE OK.
kick always, unless I need to be extremely specific about where the ball needs to be, then I will throw.....but 99% of the time all the balls are struck off the ground with the foot.
i have watched a few of your videos and i like your drills, but maybe its a clash with the technique i have been taught that we shouldnt turn our backs to the goal. other than that, that exercise is made to extend the goalkeeper and get the full extension out of him so catching isn't a big issue. i like what you guys are doing :) keep the good work up
the only essue i got of you way of coaching is that you don't take critisism vey well when people say some to better the keeper you insted give excuses why he does something wrong, to me thats not good coaching.
depends on who is doing the criticising...if it's andy koepke or sepp maier or dan gaspar or another goalkeeping coach who has played as a high level professional and has coached at the highest levels....then I am definately going to listen. If it's someone who has been around the game at the highest levels for 20, 25, 30+ years....then I am going to listen. If someone doesn't fit that criteria, then I'm probably not going to listen, due to my own playing and coaching background.
very few of those balls are catchable for him and all of those balls went out of bounds as opposed to back into the field of play. In my opinion, he made correct decisions, used proper technique and made high level saves.
the forward roll is jsut there to help get his body out of balance. something that forces you to reaquire your footwork, body balance and rythym. It helps with body control as well. Obviously, you would never find yourself doing a roll like that in a game, so it's just a device to get your body out of balance. great question.
and i sai it becouse iam mexican and i want to play in profesional leages rigth now iam in an academy of mexico but i realy wish to be in STLGA
well i have a big question look, iam talll but when the ball get curve and go to the angle its hard to keep that ball can you givme a tip iam veyi god in the air but i just dont noe what to do......
there are a couple of keys to diving to balls high in the air. One of the biggest keys is that you must coil your body like the spring in a pen. Because you're tall, this can tend to be an overlooked key with all keepers who are tall. Before you take off, you must bend at the knees in order to get your hips and butt lower to the ground. Then, when you step into your dive, you must drive the opposite leg across and really push hard with the hands towards the ball. there's a german (next page)
video here on YouTube that shows it in slow motion very well. go to your search box and put Torwarttechnik für Jugend und Erwachsene
into the search box. start watching at about 30 seconds and you will see a perfect slow motion example of the technical aspects of how to get to balls up in the air. it's perfect. watch the opposite leg very closely as well as the hands and arms.
excellant question. the reason we stopped filming crosses is because we don't have a professional grade camera and it tended to distort things like jumping ability, ball speed, ball trajectory, the forward momentum of the goalkeeper and other issues. We did it in the Elite Training video and when you watch it, it in no way gives a true idea of the goalkeepers ability. Even though you watch it and see he does well, you can't tell how high and how fast he really is moving through the air.
this boy likes to work!!! no dragging his feet back to the start of the exercise for the next rep! he remained busy thoroughout the exercises!
GoodLuck!!
ps. just wondered how your students felt about the training out on the turf...i mean i know the bounces and whatnot are more consistent but i really do prefer grass pitches.
pss. GREAT SERVICE!! the serves are picture perfect on YOUR part!!
he is the model goalkeeper in terms of his work rate and ethic..you can tell it means something to him..it's important. The turf issue was brought about because it hasn't rained here significantly in forever, and the ground is hard as a rock. I agree with you on the grass vs. turf issue, but right now, the turf is softer and with all the diving, I wanted to try to ease the pounding on the body as much as possible. Otherwise, we would definately be on the grass.

@patar49 his height is a negative factor, a keeper at 5ft 8 has got no chance to become a major league player, hes simply too small.

A lot of potential
My brother is 10 and started training with the goalkeeping coach of Ajax at 8.
I hope he will one day become something as I am sure this man will.
