WOW. what a race. Wish i would have been there, but unfortunately I was a 4 year old little guy at the time. Though my father remembers seeing this race telecasted while we were living in Argentina.
I saw this race from track side. It was amazing! I had earlier ran in a boys 800m race which I came 4th in. I wonder if anyone has any footage of that?
31st Aug Ovett got silver in a strong Euro champ in 1-44-09 (3rd fastest of the year) then 15th Sept he broke 2 mile record. Not even Aouita could have done that in the same season!!! Extraordinary!
The legenendary Steve Ovett, from 1977 to 1980 unbeatable, should have went for more world records during this period, but he was never about that. The wave to the crowd brilliant.
i remember watching this with my family & everyone jumping around the living room cos we loved Ovett & always willed him to do his wee wave on the final straight. Not seen this race for nearly 33 years. Thanks for posting

a world record with the fast-slow bursts and waving to the crowd, could only be ovett !
This must be the most unevenly paced WR ever run. A ridiculous run indeed.
