  • We do that for various reasons where I work.. something over pressures, blowing something down, or a psv pops.. that was little lol.

  • @Twiztid1357 Hi, I was wondering if you could shed some light, (pardon the pun) on an unusual event (most likely linked) to Mossmorran early this morning? The noise was unlike anything I have ever heard before! It sounded as if the Sky was coming down! It lasted for a good 20-odd minutes or so before the Burners were switched on. It woke people as far as Kelty & Crossgates! It was terrifying & the Police said they were inundated with calls. It sounded as if it was going to blow! Seriously!

  • I agree, it seems like you should be able to use this energy but it's too dirty and unstable to feed into a machine. Turbines and boilers need predictable amounts of clean gas. This stuff is extremely variable in pressure, it's dirty and full of poison. In order to even out the quality and pressure you need..well, the rest of the refinery! What you see burning is the stuff that's too extreme in quality and pressure to be allowed in.

  • why do they do that for any way

  • i couldnt agree more, ive spent almost 10 years out in the freezing cold, busting my ass, trying to make a decent living. while green liberals bitch and cry about carbon emmissions and set bombs in toms lake. flaring is a fact of life.

  • it is a waste, but these let off gases that are of too high a pressure to be safely contained in the system.. it's either waste some at the flare, or blow the whole damn facility off the face of the earth.. gotta weigh the options, ya know?

  • its because there is too much prusher in the tanks and it would pop the rig like a bollon and its worse for strate natril gass to go into the air insted of co2

  • you create co2 when you burn the gas...

some modern ethylene-plants compress their off-spec gasses and re-run them in the production process. while drilling on- or offshore ,released gasses must be burned due to safety reasons, so that's normal. ethylene/propylene steamcracker-plants produce far less hazadous by-products, flaring the gasses are really a waste of energy in these cases. shareholders just don't want to invest in a recycle unit, because burning it is cheaper .

  • Gas flaring is not just for fun.

    It serves many purposes.

Helping reduce pollution, some of these gasses produce more pollution just by them self then all the CO2 and CO they produce when burning.

Safety, what's better, a gass plant that blows up because of pressure, burning for days making pollution, or venting away some gass and burning it, making far less pollution.

  • totally false. it just releases the pollution all at once

  • Ok fair enough the guy din't know shit about the O&G industry. Neither do I but the fact is - there's obviously a shitload of energy in the gasses there. Whether they're waste gasses, proofing the field, byproducts or even overproduction is irrelevant. You could still just as easily run thet shit through a gas turbine attached to a generator and exhaust it at the top of the stack so you get a good low pressure to help run the turbine harder. Energy from waste. That's what the buggers on about.

  • @ca3d00 OMG , you have solved the energy crisis , no one has EVER thought of that.

  • stupid tree huggers. there is many reasons for flaring this gas, H2S wells, it could be just all oil, so you just burn all the gas, thats what we do in North Dakota, and sometimes you have a linepack on pipe lines, so if linepack is 400 pounds and burp the well before wireline, you have to flare, cause you have to go under 400psi. these people should that videod this should be beat up and rolled into a ditch, they dont know anything about the Oil fields

  • that gas there is a waste product.......it's desposed of by combustion.....u wouldnt want the in yo ride yall :P

  • I agree with what everyone who works in the patch has said. You green peace hippies have no idea what you're talking about. You only think you do. Spend 10 or 15 years working in the O&G industry then you can talk.

  • did anyone take into consideration that this could be a sour plant with poetent H2S if that is the fact than even .01% of it would kill a 300 pound man in half a breath, are you worried about wasting gas now? and besides there is no use for H2S, it's a partner gas of H2S just like CO2 and it is copmletely useless.

  • As a gas well tester in Edmonton AB. I can tell you that most of you don't have a sweet clue what you are talking about. Not all wells can be completed inline due to methods and gases used to frac the wells. Before you call green peace you should research what you are talking about.

  • "Just a thought" It`s just a pity they are not Recycling the waste Energy and put it to a good use, like using it to Produce Electricity to use in the plant and any extra into the national grid. There is also some place down south that uses the waste energy to grow tomatos. Could not something like this use the waste energy of the plant. "Just a thought"

  • you clearly don't know what your talking about.

  • i stay in lochgelly and i get a heat from mossmorran when they flare. i dont need to put the light on when they're flairing either. it lights my living room up for free. who said you dont get anything in this day and age eh lol. the place should be closed as theirs been more fucking deaths since the place opened

  • You're completely ignorant if you think flaring is helping the world as a whole in any way. If all the flaring was cut globally it would be enough cut emissions to meet the Kyoto Protocol, and here you are saying that it is "cleaning" compressors. Nigeria flares enough to produce energy for half of Africa, but nearby communities are rife with poverty and governments with corruption. Flaring is the biggest waste of a resource, a resource we shouldn't even be using anymore because of its damage.

  • that's right, clean all the shit from inside, burn it up, fire the residue hundreds of feet into the air, all so you can keep the pollution process to a maximum. Is it coincidence that asthma has increased so much in Fife in the years since Mossmorran was opened??

  • I stay in Cowdenbeath an the noise of the flare sumtimes keeps me awake. And ma mum works in edinburgh an they can see it on the other side of the bridge.
