You don't need an "assistant" for exposition. They were there to provide the "pretty girl" for the sake of ratings. That's the vagaries of television, unless there is some unusual creative control, like with, "X-Files". In a better parallel universe somewhere drwho is owned by someone with creative control, like with Chris Carter and, "The X-Files"...
