I love Pape but he seems to struggle with one particular line here sacrificing technique to get the Russian out. Still...he really seems to understand the message here.

Given that he grew up in East Germany, Rene has probably had extensive exposure to Russian. It certainly sounds like he understands every word and listen to his "throaty" hard Ls, differentiated from the lingual soft Ls. But the most "authentic" non-Russian basses IMO are George London and Robert Lloyd. I think Lloyd could actually fool people.
