3. Pre-set parties- Characters came and left; they were turned to stone, sacrificed themselves, knocked out into comas, were eaten by leviathans, mind-controlled, even got sand sickness. You never knew who was going to be in your party next, or who was going to leave your party for whatever reasons they were pursuing.
2. Character uniqueness - each character had their unique abilities that no other characters could obtain/inherit. It made all the other FF's so pointless to have another character if all the characters could do the same thing. With this setup, you had to work with what you were given at the time. Made for a good time with working with different characters (also made it so enjoyable when Kain was on the team cuz he rocked!)
True. This was one of the first RPGs I played, and it really made you think about strategy when you'd suddenly go from a party with 1 fighter and 3 mages to a party with 3 fighters and only 1 mage.
I still believe this is the best FF in the series. There are a few major points that none of the other FF series were able to live up to in comparison to this one. See explanations below:
1. Story- love (rosa), betrayal (kain), trust (rydia), revenge (edge), honor (yang) father/daughter/son-in-law problems (tellah, his daughter and the bard), unknowns (palom, parom, fu-so-ya), I am your brother situation (golbez). Freaking amazing.
There were 6 FF games released in Japan, 3 of which didn't get released here. Those were FF II and III for the NES, and FF V for the SNES. When they finally got around to releasing FF IV over here, the people who localized it for the US just renamed it FF II, since the real II and III never made it here.
No, the English-language versions that you'll see of Final Fantasy III are fan-translated versions and emulations that people play on their computers. And of course you know that Final Fantasy V was eventually released in a package bundle with Final Fantasy VI (what was called III in the US) and Final Fantasy II was remade for the WonderSwan and released eventually on the PSOne.
what made the 1st generation FF good was the uniqueness of each character that only one person can use magic one can use summon one can Jump etc. the new FF series lost that charm
Ahahaha, it's so bad watching this after playing the Advance version...the dialogue sounds like something out of some guy who dunno how to write english.
Unfortunately, that's almost true, though it was a woman who did the original translation and she did what she could with her knowledge of English.
Square really didn't have any serious standard localization work until Ted Woolsey came along and did the translation for Final Fantasy VI, among other games.
i never got out of the final dungeon maybe i should try again :P

Dude, the text disappears way too fast, people can't read it in 0.001 second, you know.

Sucks you never get to play as Golbez. He seems pretty badass as a magic user.

Damn, recruz00 just made a really good point. Well, I think IV-X were all great Final Fantasies with strong elements. :)
I thought VI was the best and I sadly haven't even played it at all. :(
I'm so thankful for our fellow youtubers uploading great game walkthroughs, AMVs, and soundtracks. :D

Also, Don't forget the occasional PC that leaves your party at childhood and returns to the same party in adulthood.

I got a question, Why is it that Final Fantasy IV is Final Fantasy II in the US and Final Fantasy III VI is Final Fantay III in the US?

Not to be a dickhole, but just a correction, this is FF IV (4), not VI (6), and was our FFII, not III.
