I saw the original director's print at the UCLA film archives. It was a pristine print. This is one of the best westerns ever made. It has two really great "ride-ins": the opening credits and the ride into Blanco Canyon at the end for the big shoot-out. The ending is like Don Quixote with Greg and his gal riding off with Sancho Panza in tow.
Somebody remarked that the theme for "The Big Country" should be our national anthem. I agree. Let's start a petition on the Internet.
