What do you do when she gets tired and doesnt jump in for the toy? Im thinking of trying this with my german shepherd but I dont wanna jump in for the toy if he doesnt go get it lol. he has a lot of energy so he gets distracted easy and sometimes when I throw a toy he gets distracted by a fly or something else and starts chasing that instead
Mals are definitely not for everyone- but for those who can handle their intensity,- they are one of the most versatile and trainable dog breeds available. I admire anyone who can get one of these guys to go in the water. I have an 8 year old Mal/GSD mix who will do just about anything I want her to do, including following hand commands, but she draws the line at anything involving jumping into a body of water! She tolerates her bath but that's her only involvement with water.
you have to love the breed to understand the breed. They can be loving pets, just need to exercise them and keep them busy. They love children and are very loving animals. They don't have to be working dogs all the time. You must have alot of time for them, but don't tell people they aren't good dogs to have. You just have to know what you are getting in to, and devote the time to them! In loving memory of our beloved Marco....the best Belgian Malinois, and doggy friend I have ever had!
We had just transitioned over to Belgian Malinois when I was in the Marine Corps 1988-1992 and wouldn't suggest that anyone go and get these dogs. As SplishSplash stated you have to be very experienced with this breed and they are probably one of these hardest working dogs out there. Great videos!
my husband and i grew up with dogs all our lives and my husband loves dogs and we have handled aggressive energetic out of control dogs. we are very willing to help our daughter. She is very outdoorsy and loves going hiking, canoeing, horseback, ect. and plans to take him everywhere, do they have any major health problems
wow that is so neat i'm thinking about getting my daughter a puppy after our older dog died can you tell me about this breed it seems perfect for her energetic athletic and loyal!
They are a breed for very experienced trainers/handlers only! They are intense, extremely energetic, high drive, and can be aggressive if not trained properly or socialized. If that doesn't scare you off then maybe a mal is for you :)
I have 4 Belgian Malinois..best breed..only breed I'll ever have..we have 3 shows then one working..got the worker from augusta..his name is hito..my pride and joy lol
Really cute puppy, where did you get her? She looks like she'll have a great future in dock diving. I found with my dog waiting to throw until she is almost there actually makes her jump shorter. It seems to distract her from the jump, she does much better when I throw the toy out far into the pool first and then send her. But then I have never learned how to actually train this, she is just a natural swimmer and jumper. She seems to enjoy the hang time!
Yeah I have done what you are talking about before, the place and send, she does go pretty far with that. I am going to keep at this technique for a bit but we will see when she is older which works best or her.
she was doing really well at the start but then started to hesitate in the future quit while your ahead. work on throws on your own without the dog use a bucket or a can of some sort and try to hit it. you can also work on your angle too. good luck at your dolphin training sounds so fun!!!!
Thank you for the advice. Actually these are not in order, the hesitation is due to my throw. Which we are working on, it is just so difficult to get that timing down :)
Hey why were you using the width of the dock and not the length? In dock diving competitions they always give the dog about 10 yards of room to get speed to jump for the toy. Beautiful dog though.
In a competition you have 40 feet of dock to use. You can start you dog anywhere you want. Cricket is a puppy and she is learning technique. I want her to focus on the toy and pop off the dock. I will worry about speed and distance later.
It won't be until July because I will be living in Hawaii from January to May, working as a dolphin trainer. So July will be the earliest I will be able to have her ready by.
She's doing great in this video. I wonder how she is today. It's 2012 as I write this.

Mals are also known for longevity- it is not unusual for them to live 15 years or longer.

No, just the usual hip issues, but they are a very healthy and sturdy breed.

but she doesn't have any run room
lionguy02 3 years ago 11
Exactly. I don;t want speed yet. I want control, focus on the toy and "pop". Then comes speed and with that distance.
