Everyone here i hope knows 59' Chevys had X Frames which enabled supports on the sides. Their very dangerous because of this so of course it'd crumple, Even if it looked good. I own a old 66 chevy which has a box style frame. If you put my car against the malibu, i would be lookin at replacing a grill and a fender, possibly a rad: And i might have a broken nose cus no air bag, but i at least i know im driving away from this accident. :)
That's crazy, but you just ruined a classic car you could sell for thousands of dollars. No more of those are being made. What a shame:( still a cool crash test though
Does anyone else notice the amount of rust-dust? That 59' may have had a new coat of paint, but the film clearly shows it was total rust-bucket. In which case it's "All bets off". The bodily danger of old cars was always the 'secondary crash' that occurs within passenger compartment, never structural failure.
@COMO10110 You are assuming a head on collision. The crash test in this video is an offset collision (the most common type). The problem with full fram vehicle in an offset collision is the usually the frames are deflected and do not absorb any energy. This leave the thin sheet metal body of the car to be "sheared off" the frame. That is what you are seeing in this video.
I am VERY glad that the newer cars have crumple zones- I was in a BAD car wreck and if I were in that Bel Air, as much as I love that thing, I would be a memory- INSTEAD, I just suffered a broken sternum, a few cracked ribs and 5 compression fractures in my back and a dislocated shoulder. My body wil NEVER be the same, and I was cut down in my prime, BUT at least I am able to tell about this - AND I get a lifetime supply of Vicodin, 2 settlements and permanent disability.
They picked one of the weakest cars from the 1950's to compare the 2009 Malibu with, and it was further weakened by years of corrosion. I'd like to see that Malibu hit a 1974 Chrysler Imperial head on. The old Imperial is still banned from many demolition derbys because of it's legendary crashworthiness. In any case, all they accomplished here was to destroy a beautiful work of art.
I used to have a 85 cadillac fleetwood brougham in 98 an old guy used to drive a brand new toyota land cruiser pick up which is known to be the toughest toyotas pick up in production crashed to my rear end of my cadillac and the car is totalled while my cadillac only needed is left tail light from that day i loved all pre 90s car are the best from repairing, fixing and durability so there is no chance whats so ever this staged play.
@COMO10110 I am going to be honest with you... new cars are much better engineered than older cars. On top of that, the cockpit cage is tons stronger on a new car, with substantially better a-pillars.
@logik316 Yes, but worse: it was a trick for get up malibu´s sales. Bel Air had a more small engine and the frames rusted... and ladder: a witness saw it. It´s a pleasure to see you americans are more difficult to deceit that people here in Spain. Classics were made with many more quality and rigidity than moderns, money was servant of car bussines, not master.

I don't care if it sucks at protecting you, the Bel Air just looks amazing, its a car to cruise around below 20 you're not supposed to "race" it

Every person over 35 needs to see this video. I work in the auto industry and it's amazing how many baby boombers think new cars are unsafe.

Neither car was drivable after the crash. So I guess it was a tie.
