Ouch, that must have been something nasty! =/ A similar thing happened with me today when I plugged my laptop into a surge protector and a red and orange flash came off the plug. Fortunately, nothing plugged into the protector was damaged, but the protector was burnt similar to how yours is in the video.
Older surge protectors are dangerous, because the MOV components do not have thermal cutsoffs, when an older MOV goes, it goes Super NOVA heats up till it burns to a crisp. anything made after year 2000 should have thermal disconnect protection.
Amazing it didn't start a fire. I only trust APT (Advanced Protection Technology) for protecting not only my home, but my investments within my home. They also have a warranty that is better than any other.
Never keep those pass 7 year they have a joules rating once they hit that rating the MOV will burnout and can take out your electronics . Always go with one that has the highest amount of joules and the lower clamping voltage anything over 400v clamping voltage is to high stay away from those, if you are going to keep them for a long time.
you are lucky, this thing did what it was made to do your equipment is working fine, this thing took a hit for your electronics, lucky your house didnt catch fire
