  • does wine degrade the performance of applications meant for windows?

  • das web!

  • Ahhhh... why can't any version of Linux install Windows Programs natively? Is there some kind of Microsoft patent that prevents the Linux Creators from implementing required API's for it?

  • Why would you run FileZilla in WINE seeing how FileZilla is already made for Linux ?

  • whatabout beer, whiskey, vodka, and especially... MOUNTAIN DEW??? #FTW

  • whatabout beer, whiskey, vodka, and especially... MOUNTAIN DEW???

  • Linux is so hard to use. Thank god for tutorials or I would of given up a.

  • Sorry, do you have to have Windows installed on another drive? Does Windows have to be "running" or something?

  • weird voice gut but good tutorial with poor visual

  • There is also an filezilla foor ubuntu ;) Thats work better :D

  • I don't understand why anyone would want to run windows programs when there are plenty of opensource programs that are as good as or better than what windows has to offer? Also most people would not be able to do that installation without help!

  • Totally outdated. You should put in an annontation, since it's in the repos now.

  • Linux Mint or Ubuntu :I

  • ubuntu ftw

  • Im a noob but is there a way to install Ubuntu right on your computer when you assembled all the parts or do I have to windows first and install ubuntu after?

  • u dont need windows to install ubunto cd inthe thing and make sure u have boot from cd selected in bios.

  • as long as ur comp has bios and you have a boot cd, you should be able to boot and install off the cd, but ide consult either cnet, or osgui first

  • how i can download wine becaouse i can t instal internet on ubuntu exe file i need full!!

  • You can install Wine in Ubuntu. I think it's in their repository already so all you need to type is apt-get install wine.

  • you have to be running both windows and ubuntu to do this? is there anyway to run windows programs without having windows installed?

  • @thenobs123 You don't need Windows for this.

  • can you help me then because everytime I try to download wine i get an error message. It says this "This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Futhermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time."

  • now you can download wine just on the ubuntu softwarecentre

  • NIce tut. Now maybe I can use Linux on my computer with wireless internet that uses exe to intall.

  • Rumble fighter doesnt work for this -_-

  • Am I wrong or FileZilla has the Linux version???

    In ubuntu:

sudo aptitude (or apt-get, whatever) install filezilla

  • ich weiß nicht ... besonders einfach sieht das alles nicht aus! andererseits fast ein neuer grund, auf linux umzusteigen: mit etwas erfahrung kommt man sich da sicher wie ein programmierer vor!

  • haha ... voice from Brüno

  • Windoze is terrible, WINE is the same crap !!!

If you need an APP , GNU/Linux has that , it will work 50x better..

    Windoze and Microsoft SUX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • games? what if i want to run games?

  • i dnt think that would work to well... cuz windows uses DX10 Ubuntu uses opengl or something. So no... im not sure but no it might not work.

im a windows user but i've been looking into Ubuntu im interested in trying something new and if this can run windows apps(without error) then now im more interested. From what i hear ubuntu has its own(free) games u can download.

  • Actually, a lot of Windows games use OpenGL too. Also, Wine has its own DirectX API which basically converts it all to OpenGL, it works fairly well at this point in time (games like HL2 and WoW work fairly well).

  • they really should make a "bash_aliases" wizard at boot where you can rewrite those looong commands for the terminal. :p ex: sudo apt-get install would be for instance "installera" (or sinstall for english) then you just open the terminal: input "installera wine" and then input your password. DONE!

  • oscurochu ...you are an imbecile,

you can install and boot windows from within Linux, so you can play in linux and windows at the same time. :P

  • LMAO i didn't know Bruno was a geek HAA

  • HAHAHA! he sounds a lot like him, doesn't he?

  • The Very first Program that was made is NotePad, Second the Command Prompt

Third the Visuals,HTML,PHP,Basics,MySQL,CSS,BB,APP,Array...... argg so many etc.

Linux is just using the First and Second Program that was made, the NotePad and Command Prompt so thats why u can understand how the history of Operating System`s are Made.

  • alas not notepad rather "Edit" but i'll let you off lol

  • You do realize that most Linux distros require less time and less steps during the installation procedure than Windows, right?

  • @EdgyRootStudios That is true ! Linux took me all of 10 mins. to set up & get going. But windows 7 took me an hour. Then failed. Then took me another 30 mins. Then failed again. Then I found out that when I formatted & needed to install vista again to install the upgrade witch took another 3 hours. What a pain in the ass!

  • @SixonQjz . Instead of going into detail about how wrong that comment is and how stupid you sound I will just say that you are an idiot when it comes to computers. That is why Windows was invented

  • Comment removed

  • will wine run fifa 09 in ubuntu 9.04 ?

  • Thanks for this, switching over my secondary computer to a linux server - needed this for a few things.

  • up in anyway do u have photoshop cs4 extended or 3ds max n maybe flstudio if u did pls tell me if it works then ill reinstall ubuntu lol?

  • how is he running windows xp on a second partition? does he have two motherboards connected to the same hard drive? lmao

  • he is Dual Booting Windows XP and Ubuntu..

  • no shit, point out the obvious. i was joking about his terminology. >.>

just because you didnt know that and had to google it up real quick doesnt mean im just as much an idiot as you are.

  • lol... i dont want any debate here or anything.. i just thought that you didnt know what he meant and that.. and i didnt google anything to answer your question..

  • U must be stupid, Partition is taking a hard drive and creating a seperate space on it for linux, mac or another vers of windows. you can have as many O/S's as ur hardrive can hold. Now ur motherboard has nothing too do with it othern it reads the boot files from the hardrive/s you then select it thats it help U any?

  • operating systems are stored on hard drives not motherboards...you can have as many os installed as you want, but you can only boot one at a time

  • Why is it that youtube is full of COMPLETE MORONS?

That was the WHOLE point of my post. He said he is RUNNING ubuntu and windows, you can only RUN one at a time. my point was he needs to change his terminology....

  • ....ididnt understand what to do..

i tried but it was sayin there was a problem or something

so it didnt work for me...

  • does this work with linux mint?

  • I am to lazy to do all this coversum shit that Y windows rules and besides I get all my aplications for free in widows by torrents and cracks

  • Something interesting I found the other day. There are several demonstrations of this OS running fast on slow machines & screaming fast on modern PC's. I'm not saying it's better. But it is interesting.

    /watch?v=i2bofFSjPEc&feature=fvw

    /watch?v=BSOZOzbJqGw

    /watch?v=V92-5VDB7i4

    /watch?v=Fx3q2wFIn6k

It's nice, having more than 4 choices EH ? :D

  • there are lots of games not working even with wine...

  • And maybe it's fine that way. Maybe linux doesn't need more retarded users. Their forums are spammed with pointless questions that were asked dozens of time. The real problem is that people are too lazy to search their own answers.

  • Why should this be so advanced!

  • This is what runs most users away from linux. There needs to be a simple front end loader to install these programs without having to use the terminal. When this happens You'll see an explosion of new users.

  • I've got a philosophy, if a person finds the Terminal to complicated, they could just stick with Windows. Being an old DOS user, it's was easy getting the hang of the terminal. hyuk-hyuk!

  • Very true ! I was only making a hint to the Linux community to make is simple for any Joe Schmoe to pick up & use. It is a major part of Fucking Microsoft over >:D & that's My biggest dream for Linux ;) I want to see Microsoft fucking DIE !! >:D

  • Ever heard of synaptic package manager!

  • nope. after fooling with it for about 2 months. I just ditched it. .. Mabey one day I'll try it again & make a note on that. Thanks :)

  • It's called a DEB package.

  • ubuntu 9.04 is to simple for anyone that has common knowledge from windows os.

  • Wish I could try it.. But My PC will not boot it up in the drives. :(

  • try burning at a slow speed, if not, make sure you have atleast DECENT hardware, if that doesnt work, idk

  • @wingnut4427 So basically your saying people liked to be spooned feed and are lazy bastards.

  • @xerfoify right on the nose ! ;)

  • @wingnut4427

There IS actually. These days you really don't need to foolow all these steps, you just get it from the Software Center that comes with a lot of Linux distros. That way it's even easier to find and install an application since you don't even have to search for a download link. Ubuntu has this as well these days.

  • This is acually really hard to do from some users including me lol anyways Look for a video about this by expertvillage his way works and is much simpler.

  • I thought about installing vista but if have to do all this everytime i wanna download or install a program.. Im going nuts...

Why dont linux just simplify it with some easy user interface! ?

  • Ubuntus main supporter.

  • canocial?

  • IT DON'T WORKS!!!!

  • well atleast a 4 year old asian is smarter then you, you little fuck stop being raciest bitch

  • Comment removed

  • I rekon

  • It's THE program for running Windows applications on Linux.

  • Wine is so much easier to use than this (although it is a nice tutorial), you just go into add/remove programs and select 'wine', then install/use windows programs exactly as you would in windows.

  • I love how linux is distributed as free. They even ship them out to you if you need that for free. That is really nice of the people who are in charge of that. That goes to say that they actually care for their users. Wouldn't that be the day when linux is the main installed o/s on new computers. Awesomeness.

  • Once I can get the thing accessing the internet after install with adequate sound I will shift over to Linux. I'm not amazingly fuzzy but I need my music and internet before I'm willing to scrap buying Windows and really work my way into being a Linux user. Am just downloading Ubuntu to give it a spin and see if my ubuntu net drivers and sound work.

Have always wanted to make the switch just didn't until now feel as ready,

  • yea i hear you. but hey, why not just dual boot the system? me, i have xp pro, vista, and xubuntu. So i can decide which one I want to use every time i boot up. I love xp and xubuntu. vista really sucks but i decided I might as well have it as an option, since my laptop manufacter only covers warranty on vista o/s. how gay is that. but yea, dual or triple booting is the way to go. that way you get a bit of both worlds.

  • Well I have now done that and am strongly considering scrapping windows over time once I have Linux how I want it. Year boot loaders need to be more dunce friendly so that more feel confident to give other OS's a spin. It's all moving on quite nice now from the looks of things.

  • lol thats true i got ubuntu 9,0.4 and vista i just use vista to use ms office because it is good and ubuntu to surf, hack and other stuff and yes ubuntu owns vista!!!

  • xD FAIL

  • nvm nvm im a fat nigger nvm

  • Can the latest version run windows movie maker?

  • Why bother, I'll bet Linux has better software for the task.

  • When I try to open wine in the terminal, I do what you do, put the .exe file onto the terminal, then put wine in front of it deleteing that appostraphy. And it just goes to a nother line and does not open anything.

  • linux Pwnd!

  • i love the idea of linux - i think all software should be free (or like a maximum of £10!) but it's just sooo unnecessarily complicated and long winded! and i'm not a dipshit when it comes to computers... i can do all of this, but compare this, to just sticking a disk into your machine and clicking "install".

  • Yeah, that's the problem with Linux, elitism. Luckily projects like Ubuntu and others are bringing simplism for non programmers like most of the people.

  • nice tutorial

    thx :D

  • It really is that simple if you just want to run Linux programmes on Linux. This is a tutorial on how to run Windows programmes on Linux. Think of how difficult a tutorial would be on running Linux programmes on windows.

    Linux is not difficult:-)

  • hey does ubuntu wine run all windows games, and is there any other software to be able to run it all?

  • No, but Wine is ideal for majority winsoft. Googl-It "Wine Doors" :D This bundle included wine and many win-libraries ...

Please, visit ubuntu or Wine / Wine Doors forums. "Wine Doors" not in repository, but Wine yes.

  • does this work with adobe after effects cs4 and photoshop and dreamweaver because they are the main programs i use

  • lol where are u from

  • From planet Robotika. xD

    lol

  • in ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid) wine is in the repository. sudo apt-get intall wine

  • lol leenux

  • Yeah, I shall play some crysis on my ps3!

  • okay im 13 and at my dad has a mac and at my moms i have a pc and i love windows and how it works with lots of software and i love osx and linux because they look and run alot better than windows but osx is more software compatible so its better but hey pcs have way better bang for your buck you know what my solution is? have windows and linux on your computer then on linux download vmware workstation 6.1 beta and you can use your windows partition in unity like in fusion and use all your files

  • sudo apt-get install wine

    terminal rocks!!!

  • WOOT Indeed!

  • If you're using Ubuntu Linux, you could also just use its package manager. It is in the repositories.

  • nezrozumitelna picovina!!!!

  • good video

    thanks a lot!

  • i try paltalk on ubuntu and SUPRISE!!

but most of the time yu can't use the program. but that is the good news, cos whenever i did got it working. it start to freeze up.

  • Nice Tut, thanks

what is the name of the screen recording application ?

  • 1. do you then still have to access windows to install programs? i.e. games and stuff?

    2. does this also work for games without deficits in performance?

    3. how the hell can i learn how to use linux ubuntu without any pre-knowledge or RL guide?

seeing this, i DEFINITELY want to switch to Linux.

  • I've did a test myself to see whether it was possible to install and run without knowing anything. If you can burn a cd/dvd and change bios to cd/dvd drive then you can install linux very easily.

It's not that different to windows, updates are very easy as theres a central bank for the version you picked.

I haven't managed to get asio to work yet (audigy 2 plat pro) so decided on the ultimate gamers edition 1.4

Max payne installs and runs using wine just fine. Doom3 didn't work for me

  • Doom 3 can be installed as a native Linux program, so Wine is not needed. Just go to id's FTP site (idsoftware) and download the installer file.

I play Doom 3 like that.

  • Thanks! I try it! :D

  • Linux= Windows with Mac UI and no viruses or shitty trialware.

Linux dual booting with XP for gaming= Ultimate machine.

  • I would have thought that had I not tried windows 7. W7 rocks!

  • Accent sounds South African mfetho! Good video.

  • i need help. i already installed wine.

now i dont know what to do with .exe for example: itunes864setup.exe

    help me please.

  • If they can make this more user friendly Linux can finally replace Windows.

  • tru

but the whole point for linux is nothing close to being user friendly..although it's a good option especially with ubuntu

it basicly comes with ur average needs so u never have to change anything and the system can run fine for years..hoorah..thts the userfriendly they have; which windows basicly isnt

  • Well done! I previously tried to install Wine a couple of days' ago on Debian etch via Synaptic, but an older version was installed; now have 1.1.1. All I have to do now is get WoW to run on Linux!

Thanks a lot; diolch yn fawr iawn!

  • sehr schoen gemacht!

    job well done!

Ubuntu is goin to catch up more and more users! i started using it 2 weeks ago. no issues so far, but i didnt know how easy it is to run all the windows apps from the linux partition...... nice

  • If you have the apt-get extension you can simply type:

    apt-get install wine

  • will this work on the ASUS Eee PC 2GB Surf 7" Mini Notebook Computer with Linux - Sky Blue

  • Great man respect

  • Great tut that helped me out a lot!

  • It ask password so i cant do it? I'm noob with linux

  • Please dont bad comment me for this but do u have to have XP dual booted sorry but i just got linux thats why im asking

  • no, there is no need to dual boot.

wine is a compatibility layer not an emulator

  • Wine... "Wine Is Not an Emulator" Thats What It Means From My Knowledge.

  • good tutorial thanks for making it. I was looking for where to go for a list of progs I could use in wine if I were to change over to umbuntu. I cant be without adobe photoshop - so good news about that. I also like my sony vegas but maybe there is a linux video editor that is very good?

  • Thanks for your kind words. As for open linux video editors...well, there are a bunch out there, but to be honest, they can hardly compete with commercial software as far as functionality and handling are concerned. One of the better editors I can recommend is the "openmovieeditor". Search for it on Youtube, the creator of that editor has an account and vid tutorials here.

  • I haven't use them, but you also have:

    blender. org

    kinodv. org

    kdenlive. org

    cinepaint. org

    pitivi. org

  • Well, apart from kdenlive cinepaint pitivi and kino we also have avidemux, my fave out of all those.

  • I <3 Linux. This was a great tutorial, thanks!

  • Why would you want to run the Windows version of FileZilla under Wine when there is a native Linux version?

  • Very good Tutorial! But like someone else said, it would be nice to have an icon create...

  • theres a way to put the aplicattion as an icon???

  • sure normaly wine does it by itself. But personaly i prefer to see the application in the wine menu.

  • hi there, i'd like to migrate to ubuntu, but my pc is quite old. I got a p4 win 1gb ram and 80gb HD, Can i run adobe cs3 suite in ubuntu using wine? thanx for your help!

  • Sweet tutorial.

  • you sound a little bit alike Arnold Schwarzenegger lol and linux is pimped out

  • When I wrote in terminal sudo apt-get install wine got a error The following packages have unmet dependencies: wine: Depends: binfmt-support (>= 1.1.2) but it is not installable Depends: libaudio2 but it is not installable

    E: Broken packages

  • Install it first.

For more help go to Ubuntu forums

  • THINK LINUX!!!WINDOWS SUCK!!!(especially vista)

  • you are right, you will cost a Hundred Dollars for a fucking Windows Vista, and there is a free downloadable OS; Linux Ubuntu, How to install applications in Linux? because i receive an error when i install Drivers, Games and Applications.

  • Nice tutorial. I sincerely hope Linux eventually becomes the majority OS world-wide! GO LINUX!

  • it already is its just not advertised as much.....=] {[happily using ubuntu gutsy]}

  • WTF i didn't get a shit, lol xD

  • so if u dont have windows on the same machines u can get the route from the programs cd, correct?

  • this is the only problem with ubuntu it doesnt support hardly anything. you always have to through these silly processes just to install things. with windows its a simple double click!

  • No, it's not. See how it's done in Windows: 1 Find the file on the web 2 Download it 3 Double click 4,5,6,7 Click Next 8 Accept Agreement 9,10,11, Click Next 12 Click Finish 13 Register 14 Go looking for it In Ubuntu, it's like that: 1 sudo apt-get install application
  • That was supposed to be an answer to HoodSta93

  • well what about the lack of support for virtually any hardware.

it took me about 2 days to get my wireless card working
