When you learn a piece all by yourself, there will be a tendency to play the easier sections faster and the harder sections slower. In this, the opening is almost as fast as the first variation (when it goes away from the theme). When you play the opening that fast, the rest of the piece has to speed up as well. Also, the left hand is generally much easier than the right hand in this piece, so there will also be a tendency to play that louder...
