  • In this solo Gadd makes perfect use of it, not any different from what Rosenblatt does. There's no doubt that guys like Weckl, Colaiuta and Rosenblatt took some heavy inspiration from Gadd in the early 80's. I don't want to make this another "who's better than who" youtube fail discussion though, only saying this guy is cool but others has done this just as good only earlier :-)

  • i like his cymbals.

  • Where's Bill Evans?

  • Joel Rosenblatt jewish?

  • This is a perfect example on how to build a solo Very Tasty! Love the approach on the cymbals (EDGE)! and the hihat work! ( Damm Tasty) Enjoyed that Joel 2 snaps up and a semi circle! LOL!

  • his face just says it all

  • Gimme five?! Hell, he was asking for a toothpick. Cuz this drum break was so meaty!

  • i think he is better than gadd, weckl and maybe cliff almond

  • that... was... mindblowing!

  • Ha ha ha, fuck that's cool! I love the 'give me five' at the end...

  • Watching this just humbels me and makes me want to practice more, the guy is a brilliant player.

  • Supremely musical.

    Splendid.

  • Is it just me or Joel like the only drummer EVER to figure out just HOW to use a cowbell within the context of the drum set?

  • @NouveauNick No, he was heavily influenced by Steve Gadd back in the early 80's. And IMO Gadd explored the best use of cowbell within modern drumset drumming. Check out the videos with Gadd from the 70's, he already had it going back then.

  • @evolune Eh - Gadd will use it in his Mozambique patters and a lot of latin stuff. I respect Gadd a great deal - and no one will argue that Joel's more influential or anything...but I think Rosenblatt uses it in a tastier manner. More like another voice in the set instead of "This is a cowbell playing a latin pattern with a rudiment based sticking".

If you have any specific examples you want me to check out - I'd like to. :-) They're both great.

  • WOW, Joel--killin'!!! Reminds me of when I sat behind you during a Spyro show years ago. You sound fantastic as ever! -Tom

  • World class all day long.

  • You just gotta admit people- this just IS one of the all time tastiest drum breaks EVER!!

  • i could listen to this for hours!!!

  • WOW!!!

  • my favorite drummer...

    awesome...

  • He owns! Great feel and touch, one of the best vamp solo's on the tube!

  • Absolutely best drum solo I have ever seen.. Awsome feelin

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Can't believe it. He's a PRO. Peridod. Joel the man. Drum machines and DJ shit are killing the profession of the drummer. One day we will wake up and notice that there are no more human drummers because producers prefer a drum machine rather than Joel for example. To the producers, DJ shit, drum machine fascists I would say...take a look at that video and enjoy the subtilities, improvisation, richness, taste, etc a human professional drummer can offer to your song.

  • Only the problem is... how often are you going to run into this caliber of skill?

  • Cooler than Weckl? Nah.

    As cool as? Absolutely.

This guy is a master to the bone!

  • Wow !!!!!

  • FantAstik touch on the instrument.....love it Joel!

  • maannnnnnnn

  • This guy is great on the kit man.....

  • Monster drummer! Superior to many of them...even Gadd!

  • SWEEEEETNESSSS!!! Joel Rosenblatt has been a bad dude for a long time......KILLIN IT!!!

  • nice groove grooooooooovone groooooovone!!!!

  • I just think he's cooler than Weckl. Call me crazy.

  • they used to be roommates...

    no shit.

  • funky motherfucker..

  • What's so amazing about this, is how he always knows where the 1 is. He can syncopate at any given time and come in exactly on beat to assure you he knows what he's doing.

I want to learn this craft!

he and dave weckl seem to have it down to a 't'.

=) TOP!!

  • So ein Plötmann :D

    Geil!

  • Came across this site accidentally-brilliant musical drumming. Thanks for posting. All you thrashers out there play this over and over again-learn how drum solos should be played.

  • Joel plays this drum solo with most musicality

  • Pick up his new CD Hemispheres with Ric Fierebracci on bass and Phil Turcio on keyboards. It's a fantastic jazz fusion CD with great Rosenblatt drumming.

  • out of all the drummers that play this style he's definately my favorite. he's got some angst and tude!!! the others don't.

    well done JR..

  • one of my favorite drummers...the stuff he did on three wishes still blows my mind!

    beautiful playing!

  • Ah the syncopation... The ending kills me!

  • I don't think Joel or Spyro Gyra are overrated at all. I think they get their just reward by their peers.

They are all extremely talented musicians and it's hard to deny them that.

Personally I love Spyro Gyra. One of my favorite bands from any genre.

  • weckl..tiene mucha tecnica ..joel tiene sabor..por esas cosas del destino ambos estudiaron juntos...el lo dice en una entrevista ..mientras weckl..practicaba horas el se iba a aprender a bailar salsa..

  • WOW!! amazing stuff...i've been working on soloing in a lot of vamps like this lately, and he just DESTROYS it! definitely stuff i aspire to.

  • highly underrated drummer.... i like spyro gyra's stuff... which they are underrated too... everyone is all crazy about the yellowjackets.. good group but i like spyro's tunes better

  • He has a lot of Finesse!!!

    Awesome!!!

  • Thats a sweet segment, thanks for sharing. I like how much sound he gets out of just the snare and two toms. great dynamics

  • first time i heard Michel Camilo's early recordings I thought it was all Weckl on the tracks, but then i found out the the hottest latino tracks were actually recorded by you!

Since then much respect from me to you.

By the way I am a latino

  • the best of all!

  • Hey Joey !!!!! Great drumming man. Thanks for the inspiration.I really love your drumming and Musicality.I´ve been watching this video almost 10.000 times man jajaja.I would like to know if there is any recording of this concert ???

  • para mim ele é dos bateras mais completos da atualidade..um cara rico em swing e musicalidade..que Deus continue abençoando o talento dele!!

  • Amazing !!! :-)

  • I think Joel is amazing, very musical drummer, and very relaxed.

  • what a cool drummer:D

  • No doubt about it, a lot of Dave Weckl dynamics and fills but still individualistic with his own feel. Love it!

  • Joel Rosenblatt's playing is eerily similar to Dave Weckl's and yet he definitely has his own style.

  • I read somewhere that they were room mates. I think it's in his description on Drummerworld. That would explain the similarity with Dave Weckl

  • thist a way a drum kit has to be played :)

  • simply awsome the feel and timing is great. like what u do on the hi-hat hitting the right &left hand then pedal, nice sound

  • amazing:)

  • YOu are just a drumming machine

    AMAZING

LOVE IT LOVED IT LOVED IT

    thanks

  • Beautiful,perfeket...

  • JOEL!!!! you are killing me dude! WOW!! If you are reading this stuff, this is Sal!..I have to go to your house again! Let me know. Me and Gio..!

  • ive been trying to learn this solo and have most of it

but not all, its sick, joel is the man, and dude if you go to joels house, your a luck man , has all the chops
