In this solo Gadd makes perfect use of it, not any different from what Rosenblatt does. There's no doubt that guys like Weckl, Colaiuta and Rosenblatt took some heavy inspiration from Gadd in the early 80's. I don't want to make this another "who's better than who" youtube fail discussion though, only saying this guy is cool but others has done this just as good only earlier :-)
This is a perfect example on how to build a solo Very Tasty! Love the approach on the cymbals (EDGE)! and the hihat work! ( Damm Tasty) Enjoyed that Joel 2 snaps up and a semi circle! LOL!

@NouveauNick No, he was heavily influenced by Steve Gadd back in the early 80's. And IMO Gadd explored the best use of cowbell within modern drumset drumming. Check out the videos with Gadd from the 70's, he already had it going back then.
@evolune Eh - Gadd will use it in his Mozambique patters and a lot of latin stuff. I respect Gadd a great deal - and no one will argue that Joel's more influential or anything...but I think Rosenblatt uses it in a tastier manner. More like another voice in the set instead of "This is a cowbell playing a latin pattern with a rudiment based sticking".
If you have any specific examples you want me to check out - I'd like to. :-) They're both great.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Can't believe it. He's a PRO. Peridod. Joel the man. Drum machines and DJ shit are killing the profession of the drummer. One day we will wake up and notice that there are no more human drummers because producers prefer a drum machine rather than Joel for example. To the producers, DJ shit, drum machine fascists I would say...take a look at that video and enjoy the subtilities, improvisation, richness, taste, etc a human professional drummer can offer to your song.
What's so amazing about this, is how he always knows where the 1 is. He can syncopate at any given time and come in exactly on beat to assure you he knows what he's doing.
Came across this site accidentally-brilliant musical drumming. Thanks for posting. All you thrashers out there play this over and over again-learn how drum solos should be played.
Pick up his new CD Hemispheres with Ric Fierebracci on bass and Phil Turcio on keyboards. It's a fantastic jazz fusion CD with great Rosenblatt drumming.
weckl..tiene mucha tecnica ..joel tiene sabor..por esas cosas del destino ambos estudiaron juntos...el lo dice en una entrevista ..mientras weckl..practicaba horas el se iba a aprender a bailar salsa..
highly underrated drummer.... i like spyro gyra's stuff... which they are underrated too... everyone is all crazy about the yellowjackets.. good group but i like spyro's tunes better
first time i heard Michel Camilo's early recordings I thought it was all Weckl on the tracks, but then i found out the the hottest latino tracks were actually recorded by you!

Is it just me or Joel like the only drummer EVER to figure out just HOW to use a cowbell within the context of the drum set?

I don't think Joel or Spyro Gyra are overrated at all. I think they get their just reward by their peers.
They are all extremely talented musicians and it's hard to deny them that.
Personally I love Spyro Gyra. One of my favorite bands from any genre.

No doubt about it, a lot of Dave Weckl dynamics and fills but still individualistic with his own feel. Love it!

Joel Rosenblatt's playing is eerily similar to Dave Weckl's and yet he definitely has his own style.
itdudntwork 5 years ago
I read somewhere that they were room mates. I think it's in his description on Drummerworld. That would explain the similarity with Dave Weckl
